Diving is not an action sport, and therefore Tom Daley is not an "action athlete"... Action sports are skiing (Gus' sport), snowboarding, etcetera, i.e., the events of the X Games.

Blake J It's a little silly how we categorise these types of things though. Can't we just recognise the first athlete who came out as gay, and then the rest who came after? Yes, it is amazing that Gus came out, but no, he's not the first in my opinion.

"Action athlete" is a specific term used for participants in X Games type events, and Gus is the first one of those. Not referring to Tom Daley as an "action athlete" is not diminishing him (he is a WONDERFUL human being), his skill (he is an AMAZING diver) or his coming out (COURAGEOUS). Just because TD took that step as a diver (not even the first one to come out), doesn't mean we cannot distinguish the important step other athletes take in other sports. Diving is not the same as skiing, which is not the same as football, which is not the same as MMA, and so on. Each of them are unique environments, which will take their own athletes to break down the "anti-LGBT barrier". Tom Daley being accepted in diving, had (little to) no baring on whether Gus Kenworthy would be accepted in action sports.

Blake J I didn't mean that at all. I am not diminishing Gus' coming out. I am fully supportive towards his decision to do that, I think he's incredibly courageous. All I was saying, is that everyone should be recognised equally in the LGBT community.

Tom Daley was not even the first Olympic diver to come out. That title goes to the Australian Matthew Mitcham. He won gold in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, including the single highest score for an Olympic dive ever.

Then there's also the fact that a lot of LGBT+ people are so desperate for positive representation in media, that they'll immediately jump on any celebrity with an ambiguous sexuality.
