I've been trying for years to find out what became of the master for this recording. Last year I attended a concert by Gap and asked him. He said "Nobody knows what happened to the master." My LP was played to death long ago - my thanks to Russ Childers for posting this. If anyone knows of the fate of the master, please speak up; this needs to be digitized and released.

Per Wikipedia "Chuck Mangione was among hundreds [if not thousands, if you check out the old-school smaller labels of musician materials that Universal had been snapping up] of artists whose material was destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire." Universal has taken years to let folks know just how devastating a loss this has been, trying to "quietly" go around and find the next closest thing to master tapes, etc, etc, etc... with very limited success. Obviously. If the master tapes and original recordings were destroyed from the more popular artists of the day that Universal had in storage, then most of the remaining 40, 50, 60 and 70 year old+ non-master/original recording singles & album materials from these artists are no longer in the best condition, if available anywhere else, as it is. And certainly not of "Master-tape" quality. An absolutely tragic loss.

We owe it to Gerry, and to those who loved him. That applause break at the end of "Legacy" is one of my all time favorite, the way it rolls out so warmly. You can feel the love.

I sat on the edge of my cot with a small package from my wife. I just returned from a full day of flying missions over the jungles of south Vietnam and my flight suit still stuck to me as I opened the package. It contained a cassette which I put on my player while reading her words that came to me from the world. She shared our love for music and thought this album would be helpful in the stressful place I was at the time. Even today at age 76 it still has the same calming affect.

My introduction to Chuck Mangione was in third grade. He was a student at Eastman School of music. While a student he gave instrumental music lessons at my elementary school Holy Trinity in Webster, NY. Then while in R L Thomas HS in Webster I went to his friends and Love Concert. He came to perform at our school. I interviewed him. We had a television station at our school and I co-anchored our daily show Update. I am only five feet tall and as I walked down the hall w/him we were eye level. That doesn't happen to me that often. But talking to him he was a giant. I just love his music. Don Potter and Bat McGrath were also popular at that time. They had a coffee house many of us attended. They also came to our school to perform. Such wonderful talent we were surround with.

This concert, music and album is a gem in my heart. I am 64years old now and when I was a young teenager i remember this music playing on the radio as i was always traveling with my grandparents from outside Buffalo New York, a place Dunkirk NY to the Adirondacks on the wide open NY Thruway. It is very smooth and relaxing. Some very warm and great memories as a young teen. Hearing this music brings me to that time right now. And it was summer 1971. Golden !

Thankfully, I bought a new copy of this album when I found it again in the late 1980s. Found it in an record store in the original wrapper. I played my original copy to death...and still have the new one in pretty damn good shape. It is a shame that the master is lost.

Watched this concert at the time (1971). It was incredible! The album captures the spirit & the incredibly creative musical personality of Chuck Mangione, and he had wonderful musicians and singers on board too. It's sad that this double album never received the appreciation of which it is so deserving.

My first introduction to Chuck Mangione was this concert in it's entirety shown on PBS in 1972. It was only a few weeks later the same station aired the Friends And love concert. From then on, I've been a fan for life. Saw him twice in concert with full orchestra along with Don Potter, Esther Satterfield, and everyone else from the original shows. Three times more with just his quartet (Neiwood, DiBartolo and Joe LaBarbara) at The Lighthouse, all In Los Angeles. I was able to purchase a copy of The Friends And Love DVD off of Chuck's website but this concert just doesn't exist on audio or video. What a damn shame. At least I was able to commit the two concert albums to digital and burn them on CD. That was an awsome time to be alive and witness this music live.

I've seen dozens of copies of this album at thrift stores and garage sales around the Rochester, NY area over the years. I actually have 3 copies in my collection. Firewatchers is the first song I remember ever hearing as a child. My mom would play this, Herb & Hugh's "Main Event Live", and Herbie Hancocks "Headhunters"/"Sextant" literally back to back.

My father found out about Chuck while we lived in North Tonawanda in the late 60s and early 70s. We had this Together double album, Chase the Clouds Away, The Land of Make Believe, and Feels So Good. Later on I borrowed The Children of Sanchez from the library. It's incredible that Chuck had his songs slightly rearranged for marching bands - but on second thought they are so powerful, they are natural for "build ... build ... build ... explode!" Also, I am 56, and saw Chuck "in the round at Melody Fair" in Tonawanda.

This album contains the BEST versions of all of these songs. The Hollywood Bowl concert--another recorded live performance--is a big disappointment compared to this. Everything seems to have been working that night. All of the musicians and Esther Satterfield were in top form, and the recording quality is superb. I played this to death when it first came out.

The record was pressed using a mix which was too loud and created clipping/distortion. I made sure to transfer it to wav/mp3 at a level which did not add distortion. I can see the clipping in the original pressing in Audacity (which is the program I used to do the transfer from vinyl).

@@RussKC isn't that frustrating? We're now starting to have digital tools to 'clean up' such issues, sort of, but I hesitate to use them because they are imparting sonic information that, even if 'sounds good', is not of the actual performance. It's important to not add anything that isn't of the actual analog performance. Though it is tempting, and I occasionally remaster but just for personal use, never releasing into the wild. Anyway Russ thank you so much for this!
