And of course who could forget the 1950's , Soda shops, hula hoops, drive in movies, JIM CROW, drag racing. LMFAO this sketch had some gems in it. Love Kate's face after the 16 one. Well played by everyone in this.
The Daily Show had a segment where they asked the Red Hat cult: “When WAS America great?” ••• Many / Most / All of the people interviewed were white and said either 40’s 50’s 60’s ••• to which the correspondent observed: 👤🗯️ “So back when BLACK Americans were still marginalized ••• or ••• Back when we had Japanese internment camps ••• or ••• So back when lgbtq were not allowed to marry❓❗️” No one said 2000 to 2008 because praising a BUSH as President was grounds for being called a RINO. But this Sketch was hilarious because thankfully society changed but it’s BONKERS that Jerry Lee Lewis (who died in 2022 🤯) could have a #1 song on the radio while married to a 13 year old ••• back when according to the RED HATS “America was great” 🤮🤯😂
This is one of the funniest snl skits and it deserves so much more credit, the writing and pacing is so good, the accuracy to these type of commercials, truly one of my favorite snl sketches
Yeah, that was intentional. The whole bit is kinda about how people like to remember the good stuff about the past while glossing over the nastier facts.
SNL's writing lacks depth sometimes and other times the fine detail and nuance is solid! The skit was just creepy until that line, then it became avant-garde as fuck. lol
So I guess everybody is forgetting that Jerry Lee Lewis married a 14 year old? His 14 year old cousin by the way. I think that's what this skit was aiming toward. But feel free to make it political.
If anyone listened to old rock and roll, blues and R&B songs from the 40's 50's and 60's,they would know this was common back then.Elmore James had a song about a 12 year old boy fooling around with his woman. Now it's just their teachers who do that ;)
*Don't forget those hits by Roy "Woody from Toy Story" Moore 'Horse Ride To The Mall' 'Yo Mama Said It's OK' 'Box Of Popcorn On My Lap' and the unforgettable 'Sugar Daddy Loves Sugar Babies'*
Ur TheDuke why are you apologizing? Did you write the skit? I don’t have a problem with any history, only when it’s used as an agenda. Just my opinion. Take it as you will. Have a good day.
It wasn't only Jerry Lee Lewis: Elvis started dating Priscilla when she was 14 (he was going into the military and 24 - as my mom reminds me), the Beatles had that song "I Saw Her Standing There", Chuck Berry was arrested for taking a minor past state lines and wrote song lyrics like "Sweet Little Sixteen" and "Little Queenie" - you have to remember though - they are writing songs from the stand point of teenagers (Chuck Berry said specifically so) - the audience - the songs were for them about them. If you were at a prom dance and all the songs were about 40 year women, wouldn't that seem awkward?
plezx29 I never tried to say it wasn't. I'm explaining the joke. Itsmnot specific to a person. It's generalizing the mentality of those who accept it. Proven by when he says, "It's my grandpa".
Accurate premise for a 50s music fan. See "You're Sixteen" (you're beautiful and your mine), "Chantilly Lace", "From Bobby Socks to Stockings", "Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen" (Tonight's the night I've waited for, vecause you're not a baby anymore")"Shake, Rattle and Roll" (Original), "Teacher, Teacher" (educate me with a caress) and many other classics...
"Who made 50s rock and roll in the 80s"? The Queen ("Crazy Little Thing Called Love"), the Jets, Matchbox, Shakin' Stevens, Hungária over the iron curtain, and the best: The Stray Cats. And many more.
What I think a lot of SNL's audience doesn't understand is that these sketches are meant to be satire, not necessarily pure comedy. Their goal is to expose some problem in society, and in turn create humorous personas. I agree, this sketch isn't the most "funny," but it is highlighting a negative aspect of our culture.
I agree with you, but the problem a lot of people are having is that many of these sketches completely forego comedy, and at that point it isn't satire anymore. "This is Hell" was the worst about that.
@azdgariarada I know, I'm one of them. It's a shame to see so many of my peers a little older or younger than me constantly offended or shocked at how "bad" SNL is... while they're just doing what they originally set out to do.
@hannahlamb I agree, they're using their platform and satire to drop tid bits of information. While they are obviously to the left, they are objective a lot of times and address underlying issues from both sides. A lot of it is nuanced.
underrated classic. but the music video is something else lmao when hes rolling around on the carpet then making out with the girl. Barry looked about 45 lol
Some more lesser-known tracks of his: My Discord Server R. Kelly is Innocent (feat. Drake Bell) Loli-Pop Movin' Down to Thailand Dear Subway, Make Me Your New Spokesman
"Young girl, get outta my mind. My love for you is way outta line. Better run girl. You're much too young girl." - Actual song, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap.
This skit is hysterical because there are so many hit songs from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and even a couple from the 80s with lyrics we now consider disturbing and pedophilic by today's standards (and I also grew up around a lot of guys like Chucky Lee who preferred disturbingly young girls).
Also Steven Tyler. And Mick Jagger-he even wrote songs about jailbait, see "Stray Cat Blues". There's a line that goes "Yes I know that you're just 15 years old-no I don't want your ID". When he sang it live back in the late 60's/70's, he often amended that to "14".
