Chugai was founded nearly 100 years ago as a pharmaceutical importer. Our founder wanted to introduce overseas medicines in Japan, and eventually provide Japanese medicines overseas. That ambition is expressed in the company name “Chugai.”
In 2002, Chugai began a Strategic Alliance with the global pharmaceutical giant, Roche. Both companies share the same desire to deliver innovative pharmaceuticals to the world. Chugai sells Roche’s groundbreaking medicines in Japan, and Chugai’s unique business model focuses investment on highly innovative technologies and drug discovery. This led to Chugai creating Japan’s first therapeutic antibody, now approved in over 110 countries.
Chugai is now a leading company in biopharmaceuticals. With its proprietary antibody engineering technologies, discovery technologies for small and middle molecules, and next-generation personalized healthcare, Chugai pushes the limits of what we think is possible.
