Awesome vid Owen, you had me going with the title, I only clicked on it because it was you! I love seeing in depth history of bands with pics and that, no matter how dark it is. It puts the music into context
Fun fact here. I live in Brazil and in the 90s an electronics company called Oliver got a license from Roland to produce the classic Boss pedals with the exact same circuitry under their own brand name. I have the SD-1 (Oliver SD-10) and the HM-2 (Oliver HM-20) and they sound EXACTLY the same as their original counterparts. I was able to get pretty close to the tone on De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas with these two guys. The only flaw in this video is that the entire playthrough sounded like Deathcrush, but with little tweaks on the EQ you could have nailed the DMDS sound! Ah, I am still waiting for the Burzum tone video :P That might be a little trickier than Mayhem because he changed gear from album to album. According to him, in the first album, he used a Marshall on one of the guitars and a Peavey on the other. On the two following albums and on the Aske ep ue used a Peavey in both guitars, and on Filosofem he went totally DIY and used a stereo sound system with fuzz pedals plugged into it. He talks about a "small Marshall amplifier" which I simply don't have a clue about it's model, and a "60w Peavey amplifier" which I believe is a 5150. He also reports having used a Westone guitar on the first 4 albums.
I'm still working on that tone, but my current setting is: HM-2 (Oliver HM-20) - Distortion around 5 or 7, Bass and Treble around 7 or 9 (at ten the sound sounds like swedeath...) SD-1 (Oliver SD-10) - Tone at 10, Distortion at 10. I try to play around with the levels a bit, but there's a constant to it. The more SD-1 level, the more trebly. The more HM-2 level, the more bassy. Also consider you must play these through a Tube amp to get the right sound, on a solid state amp all the dynamics are gone and you're left with a wall of mud and hiss.
Para o som do Burzum simplificando é só ter um fone de ouvido com microfone para os vocais e um Marshall VS15 e já era. De qualquer forma, legal sua informação detalhada. For the sound of Burzum "simplifying" the thing is just have a headset+microphone for the vocals and a Marshall VS15 and thats it.
This band could’ve built their legacy on the music alone imho, they really could have. Once Euronymous n Varg got their faces in the press it became all about gimmicky BS. Awesome playing n video as always! 🤘🤘🖤🧟♂️🐼🌑
Would very much like to see a Candlemass episode. Especially the first album. Great episode, the early norwegian black metal bands truly knew how to make something sound grim!
I partied with the current lineup of Mayhem in 2014. Necrobutcher, I never met. But I had some good conversations with Teloch and Atilla. I bought the pigs heads for the stage and we decorated. Long story short, they're a good crew and we talked a lot about culture and traditions.
Awesome. Necrobutcher was the same one of the old crew. It’s great that you got to see them. Seeing those summer festival gigs with pigs heads rotting in the heat...and the fans eating them off the ground. Hardcore.
Fuck dawg, not trying to kiss your ads or anything, but I give you a genuine thank you for being one of the no bullshit youtube tone guys out there, and actually focussing on digging deep with the more obscure metal and all that. Fuck yea man cheers
I managed to recreate Filosofem's sound by using amp sims without cabs and vocals through amp sims as well, whispered. You should try that and perhaps make a video.
I've been listening to al lot of these bands recently especially Thorns and Darkthrone. The Thorns album is mind-blowing from start to finish and on a big stereo takes you on a unique journey. The riff on Stellar Master Elite is insane. the first time I heard it, I was like who are these people? I have to listen to this again like cover to cover.
Thorns are totally underrated and Snorre Ruch not only wrote some of the riffs on De Mysteriis, but he is rumored to have played on it as well (not sure about that one but)..I'd say the more almost Voivodish riffs are the influence of Ruch, not to take away anything Euronymous did either. I wish there were more Thorns albums, but the compilation of their early late eighties/early nineties demos is very illuminating, because a lot of the black metal guitar sound has it's roots in that (the almost full minor chords, etc)..Thorns therefore are a "missing link" band in the history and sound of Black Metal
Øystein's amp wasn't a plexi per se. Plexiglass panels weren't used after approx spring 1969, when they were phased out in favour of panels made from brass. They remained basically the same inside, though, until Point-to-point handwiring ended during 1973, and the first printed circuit boards came into use. Øystein's amp is a late seventies (latter half of 1976-1980/81 period) amp. You can clearly see in the pictures that his head cabinet has that thicker/sturdier construction that Marshall went for during that time. Another giveaway is the bolder white piping instead of the earlier style, which was gold (they also added protective corners all 'round, a slightly sturdier tolex cover material, and replaced the toggle switches for rockers during that period). Still called 1987, though (or, if it was a 100 watt model, 1959).
I know this is an older video (which doesnt really matter as this is very valid information which I was looking for) But what was Emperor's setup on In The Nightside Eclipse?
Great job, you really have a knack for this. I'd love to hear your take on "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas", that guitar there is just pure evil. And since we're talking about family friendly bands try Sunn O))) - Black one :)
From Seymour Duncan's forum: "On Rust in Peace Dave used a VHT 2150 poweramp thru a Bogner Fish Preamp (he also had a Bogner designed Hafler Triple Giant Preamp that was used for Solo's as well as rythym tracks) and a Bradshaw RSB-12 Switching system. He ran 3 Marshall 4x12 cabinets: One was loaded with 25 watt greenback celestions(a 100 watt cabinet) One was loaded with Vintage 30s rated at 280 watts total(8 Ohm Vintage 30speakers are 70 watts each) and another was a 300 watt G12-75 Celestion loaded cabinet.ALL 3 cabs were straight cabs. They were close mic'd with a Sennheiser 421 and a SM-57 close to the cones." That seems correct. I never bothered looking up to know the gear they used in RIP, I always assumed that was some kind of JCM800 boosted with a Tubescremer, since this was the main Mustaine gear since his early Metallica days. One really important thing to notice is that Seymour Duncan is launching a new Dave Mustaine signature pickup called "The Thrash Factor", made specifically to capture the tone that Dave got on RIP. According to Dave, that JB had a tone that was different from an ‘off-the-shelf’ JB - and had become part of his signature sound. SD's description of the pickup: "We worked closely with Dave to recreate the tone and feel of his favorite JB, ultimately altering the winding process in order to achieve the tone he was looking for - compared to the standard JB model, the Thrash Factor’s low end is tighter, the mids are slightly scooped, and the highs are more aggressive." Another thing to notice is that they are selling this new pickup as a set with the 59 in the neck. I can be wrong, but I think Dave doesn't remember exactly what neck pickup that Custom King V had, because he used and tried so many at the time. Could be either the 59, the Bill Lawrence 500L, which is a pickup that he used to use, or a SD Jazz. When Marty joined Megadeth, RIP was mostly written, minus the solos, so Mustaine recorded all the rhythm parts alone with that one guitar. As far as I know, Marty used his famous black Jackson Kelly also with a JB in the bridge to record the solos. Finally, another detail that matter is that Mustaine had a Kahler Fixed bridge, so with a regular nut, in that Jackson King V Custom.
He used the hm2 and the sd1 on the deathcrush ep and the hm2 the sd1 and the Arion metal master and one other pedal on dmds (De mysteriis dom sathanas)
Excellent video, I am surprised that you dug up all those stories about the early Norwegian Black Metal Scene. The only other people I know, who know, are myself and my brother. Love the archeoaudiology, and keep up the good work!
Cheers Ryan. There is a movie in the works. I have a feeling it will be canned. I think elitism went to 10 is this era. It's why I called it 5 finger death punch because that is like a red rag to black kvlt metal guys. haha
CIRCLE OF TONE. I lol'd at the 5fdp title, I figured it was a subtle troll to weed out the posers. -p.s. using the word mayhem in the title may trigger negative effects on the algorithm.
Mentioning fiver finger could accidentally fool it. They get endless mainstream press due to being a corporate band put together by label execs so it will be interesting so see if just mentioning them gets me back into fidget spinner levels of algorithm buzz worthy cringeness. Lol. I’m losing it.
OR KYUSS. Im talking the full 2 bass cabs in front of each other thing, the ovation GP, and I'd love to know some stuff about capturing bass that mighty!
I remember hearing about them and there was a documentary The Story of heavy metal think it was something it was on one of the cable channels sometime back. You alright sir these guys were truly batshit crazy. I mean really batshit crazy!
Yep there is also a movie being made about the scene around mayhem. I half suspect it will be canned. Metallica did a video referencing them a while back.
Haha that was great! I may have a request / suggestion and sorry if it's probably the most mainstream thing ever: Metallica - ...And Justice for All (the track or whatever song in the album). I know you already covered Kill 'Em All and I loved that with a passion :) But I've been always curious about what magic recipe gives the lows on that album. Thanks for you work!
That one is tricky. They threw the kitchen sink at that album. I’m prob going to do RTL as they only used one main amp. AJFA was all sorts of slave amps, Mesa pre’s, Marshall power sections etc.
CIRCLE OF TONE. Great choice! So I've spent the last 7 hours playing with my pod xt live, downloading presets and messing with (virtual) amps and mics. I've never had much ear for sound setup but thanks to you i'm getting interested, of course at an uber noob and amateur level. Fingers hurts, much fun! Thanks for your work and wisdom!!
I'd like to see you do some Entombed To Ride Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth/ Same Difference / Uprising era stuff. Love the channel but can't quite work out if you are still in the UK or are Stateside
I remember those stories back in the day and know some rather more disturbing stuff from Finland where I'm from (not so well publicized outside of Finland). It is just that people go crazy when they think they have power over other people. I'd say never promote a fool and things should be fine, excepting of course people promoting psychopaths in to real power. My suggestion for another tone video would be Misery loves Co. (A swedish industrial type of band) especially their tone on, "My mind still speaks". Cheers.
Please do the tones of a Funeral Doom band, like Skepticism or Mournful Congregation!! I think Funeral is a unique enough sound within the Doom genre with all of the crazy tunings. I'm working on a Funeral project with a friend myself at the moment. Thanks for considering my suggestion!
it was an hm-2! I knew it when you mentioned the color of the knobs :) Also, I'm pretty sure the Metal Zone has never made it to an album, lol. Even worse yet, is the Boss Hyper Metal... aka my first distortion pedal when I was 15. If it sounded terrible to 15 year old me, I can"t imagine how it would sound to 39 year old me :) I almost picked up a used one at guitar center for $35, just for nastalgia.... but I thought better of it. Keep up the great work, I'm sure that as more people are exposed to this channel, You'll continue to grow in subscribers :)... and I don't even like Mayhem lol but super interesting stuff!
Andy Beavis thanks man. I have a soft spot for nasty sounding pedals. The metalzone is super aggressive. I’d never use it on a whole album but to put some hate in the riffs it’s awesome. Glad you are liking the channel! The subs are an issue. If it stays like this I’ll have to quit by summer. I can’t put all this energy into doing mini tone documentaries and have a few hundred people watching the whole thing. People like them but don’t share etc.
CIRCLE OF TONE. Well, I'm going to share your stuff on Facebook then :) hang in there. Don't let the next guy come along and pick up where you left off...
They are really (in)famous for their trilogy, namely: Si monumentum requires circumspice, Fas ite maledicti in ignem aeternum and Paracletus. Best of luck.
I'm an old fart blues/British invasion lover and I am a big fan of yours, but after hearing some of the music you feature I have to go to sleep with the light on😯. But then I watch the next one.....
LightningDogg haha what are you talking about I go to sleep with mayhem burzum and all kinds of black and death metal British Invasion is kick ass to btw
Great sound! Hair's getting a bit too long though mate! You need to get yourself down to Dai the Barber's. I was going to sell my Boss HM-2 but it has a bust knob, it sounds pretty good though, but a bit limited. Think I'll keep it. :-)
Good video, but could you please do some EQ on your audio please? when you start off talking I have to turn the audio up because you are so quiet, then when you tear into the music (which sounds superb) I end up with this wall of loudness that I have to turn right down and then you get straight back to talking and it's super quiet again.
Dude the next one I have Info that is hard to come by. And I can’t find the super cheap item. But I know I’m going to fuck up the price on some of these gems.
What a fucking shitshow, how mental must euronumous have been if he accualy urged dead to end it all. Also one little spicy detail about count grishnach's deed was all the stab wounds, a total around forty.
Hey, Owen-saw you disabled comments on the Will's Easy guitar video, so I picked a random one to comment on. Dude, what did you do to this guy? It's like a personal vendetta against you. He's posted two videos in the last couple of days against you. Just curious, did he ever contact you about the headstock design or did he just post a video? I think I know the answer. Keep strong, redesign the headstock and pursue action on RU-vid against this guy. I've watched his videos and while he covers some interesting subjects, he comes across as an asshole. You, sir, are providing content, not just rants and attacks. Also, you can play and sing, which I'd bet is something he can't do. You can make this work! You're the real deal and I wish nothing but the best for you. \m/
I caught him pretending to be aCOT customer. Moderators ousted the customers complaining on message boards was Will. So he’s going all out to try and avoid that revelation. I already talked about the headstock/logo changing since it looks like Epiphone and Collings etc but he struck that video down (him and a small group of friends pretend to be other posters with fake accounts to flag my video). He flagged it because it had more info about him creating Fender Lover 83.
It's a first episode which left me dissapointed. First he makes Mayhem sound like early nirvana or something from that alt noise pool (melvins, etc). Secondly, the factology is laughable ("death threats for a pink guitar", etc). This is slowly becoming my favourite guitar channel so please take this comment with a pinch of salt & perhaps a righteous dose of criticism for once:)
Isn't it funny how Alice Cooper started all the dark stuff, he was just entertaining. And some of these groups take it seriously. Black magic and the occult should be understood before you mess with it. It pays back 3 fold, being from Wales you should understand the power of the pagan and magic. Its in the Celtic history. Please be careful.
I’m doing a horror/shock rock similar to Hex-Mass for Halloween. I think Alice stole from Arthur Brown who stole from someone else. The power of the HM-2 is certainly not a toy.
Nah I was never really a fan of that style. I will have to face my “modern metal production” demons and see if I can pull it off. Perhaps I’ll use them as an example?
as some constructive criticism, i don’t know if you were going for the DMDS tone or the DEATHCRUSH tone. but i’d go for a much colder tone for DMDS, and just ominous. and got DEATHCRUSH i’d go for wayyy heavier. more evil and grittier. other than that it was a great video.
I haven't seen any evidence that Euro ever used an HM-2. However I believe he did use an old Arion Metal Master, possibly in conjunction with a TS9, on a lot of the Mayhem stuff. If you try out that pedal, it can dial in a sort of cheap HM-2 sound with a lot more treble bite. I have a Arion MM from the 80s and it got me Mayhem tones almost right away. So if anyone else think something's missing from this recreation, that's probably why.
I don’t think dead alone started the downfall of the band, I think it was the tension between dead and euronymous that caused the downfall of the band.
there's no such thing that "you can take yourself too seriously" - that's what everybody do, you too. So, forget politics and start worshiping Satan, like I do
if you want the HM2 sound and want to be safe and not go insane and stab people. Get the Behringer HM300. Sounds identical (and is very cheap cause Behringer has cheap piece of sh*t stuff) :)
Oh my word, we're allowed requests? BUDGIE! please find out how Tony Bourge got that pick attack and clocked wah sound for breadfan... Please shed some light on one of the greatest guitarists to ever fall off the map :)
Sorry man. I’m in troll mode and since I’m covering possibly the most brutal band in history, I thought I’d throw up a radio friendly title. It’s a poke at RU-vid’s family friendly algorithm etc.
Cheers dude. I wondered if the labelling had got mixed up and the 5fdp had been named Mayhem. Any chance you could do an episode on Fields of the Nephilim's "Straight to the light", or Paradise Lost's "Shades of god" (the song, not the album)? Cheers from the Outer Hebrides.
LOL! I was never into their early releases - the use of the saxophone kinda jarred on me. But from their first album onwards (and I include Zoon and the badly released Fallen) I have really enjoyed. I know that less is more, but I would love it they had a higher output. If you were into FOTN, did you also get into Sisters of Mercy or The Mission?
