Mostly true - it wasn’t moved up to be the first sketch but it was indeed moved up. It ended up being the eighth segment if you include the monologue, a fake commercial and a pre-taped segment. Or I guess you could say it was the last skit before the musical guest’s first appearance.

@@DLundgren22 OK, according to Saturday Net, that's true. It was also the third sketch after Tommy Flanagan and Quiz Masters. The other segments you mention were the monologue and commercials.

I've heard Dana Carvey say that on Fly on the Wall, that is was moved up to be the cold open, but I'm confused: they don't say Live from NY, it's Saturday night! So maybe he misremembered? Or maybe this video is from dress?

@@louyeh hearing that Fly On The Wall episode is what led me to look into Dana's first SNL episode. I can't remember what Dana said specifically on the podcast but if he claimed Church Chat was moved into the cold open slot then he was mistaken. You can find the actual order of that night's SNL skits online if you look around.

That was one of the funniest church lady lines!

More accurate to say this SNL episode introduced us to those three performers. They all appeared in earlier sketches in the episode before the Church Chat skit came on.

Weird that you didn't include Nora Dunn in there. Actually, it's not weird, because she was the least funny of the group. But she'd be the star of today's SNL.

Dana Carvey was raised Lutheran, and the character was inspired by a couple people from his church, so I think it's safe to say she's Lutheran, but I don't disagree with your analysis.

But then again, Chevy Chase played Minister Bob, and minister is a very baptist title to use, so who knows? Lol Good question

If she woulda started speaking in unknown tongues, some people would've labelled her either Pentecostal or Charismatic. I know. I've been both, at one point or another in my lifetime. I've seen some weird stuff, too. When people are rolling around on the Church floor, that's bad enough. However, I once saw these two young men that I knew personally, crawling around at the altar, and they were so out of their own minds, that I actually heard them barking like dogs! Soon afterwards, I quit going to that "Church" on a regular basis, and, as of 1992, I haven't been back since, except for my Mother's Funeral. Even then, the "Pastor" of that "Church" tried to get my Brother and I to start attending there again...and I was having none of it! To me, that'd be like getting caught in a trap, but being able to get yourself free...then revisiting that same trap, and start playing with it again. No thanks-not for me!

My mother's family all attended and they converted my sister who then tried to convert me. She came home complaining that she had mud in her hair from rolling around in the floor . She is an attention seeker and a drama queen so I guess it suited her . She finely gave up on me. I'm real quiet and reserved, not my cup of tea.

Definitely NOT Pentecostal! Nothing about her character. I know trust me

Christopher Durang. Very well-known playwright who did his MFA at the Yale School of Drama at about the same time as Sigourney Weaver, Mark Linn-Baker and several other entertainers who became extremely well-known; Signourney originated many of the roles in his plays. He wrote "Beyond Therapy", as well as "Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You", the play which is referenced here.
