Church Hurt, 'Struggling With Church' // Aaron Pennington 

I looked up "church hurt sermon" because I dont know how to feel as if I can trust a pastor or a church again. Thank you, Pastor, for your kindness, your empathy, and for validating that church hurt is a very real and intensely painful experience that happens to so many. I know it will take a lot of trust in God to feel comfortable in a church setting again, but the most important thing the church can do for those who are in a hard place is to show empathy and kindness and openness. Thank you for being humble and kind.

When hurt by a church, all you can do is leave, no one cares.

I've been fortunate to be part of a house church for 12 years. The couple who hosts our gatherings are wonderful. We gather together and mutually encourage one another and minister to one another. The couples are well-to-do, and they live by a lake. We get to play pool, go boating, go swimming, you name it. This place is my second home. We share life together. I couldn't get any community in an institutional church.

As an Australian Teen who has come out of a Christian cult and is still miraculously saved by Christ, this sermon has been incredibly powerful in helping me develop ways to share my story with others who have been hurt by Churches and encourage them to give Jesus another chance, because he really is the only place where you can find someone who will treat you perfectly no matter what.

This is the first sermon I’ve sat through willingly in a long time. Definitely made me tear up. Lot of hurt here. 😢

People get hurt from church leaders because they were taught that God chose them for this position, and therefore they may even feel uneasy towards God!

I pray at home and read my Bible because a lot of churches don’t believe in all the scriptures like remarriage if your first spouse is alive. If you bring it up you get ignored by a lot of people. So feeling left out makes a person just watch on line.

They said mental illness was just stuck in step of unforgiveness.

Me and my wife experienced church hurt so much my name was called over the pulpit but my faith was in God not man. My wife and I left the ministry and been at this current church for six years and I have grown spiritually.

This message was void of God's Word. There is nothing but God's Word for a person going through hurt from a church to cling to. People will fail. Words are just words. Pastors can stand up in front and say all the right words. But it's meaningless. You can't apologize for the hurt caused by other people. Churches that are causing hurt have leaders that are protected and insolated. Questions aren't welcome and there is no care about discipleship. And if a person risks going to the church for help, their vulnerability will be used against them. No one will believe a worthless sheep, the male leadership is untouchable. They can do or say whatever they please. The hurt have to leave even if they've been there 3 decades and every part of their life is tied to the church. But who cares. Who cares that someone has left and cries every day. No one knows or cares because they are forgotten. God does not abandon. His Word and His promises are all some of us have. Other churches don't want people with church hurt. It's a topic I don't think churches talk about. If you've experienced it you know the depth of pain. And it can't be talked about because no one believes the person being hurt especially if others haven't experienced the same treatment from the person. You're made to be the problem and you come away worse than before you started.

John Piper said women should an endure abuse by their husbands (including physical abuse) for a season. A quick search will find that. Probably not the best person to bring up when talking about church hurt....

I was with you until you compared church hurt to family hurt. Stop giving the church a pass for bad behavior. We need to clean house.
