Church in the Sea Storm Tide Photography

In this landscape photography video I visit my nearest beach at Aberffraw, Anglesey. I wanted to make an image of the Church in the Sea as a counterpoint to one made some years ago. I needed a very high spring tide, ideally at sunset with some drama in the conditions. I may have got more stormy conditions than I bargained for!

I get asked a lot about the equipment I use. As I’ve typed up countless replies and links and lists for friends and viewers, I’ve now set it all out definitively here: dgriff.gallery/gear/.

Really nice shots David. Why is it that some of the best shots are taken in the worst conditions? I'm glad that there are so many good photographers who are willing to endure whatever Mother Nature throws their way to get those outstanding photos, that's the only way people like me get enjoy them. @DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery 3 года назад
You make sure you let me know if you ever decide to have another stab at that location! It's about time we got out together with the cameras. The bridge is just up the road on the estuary at the village of Aberffraw. On a high spring tide it's completely surrounded and inaccessible, unfortunately there isn't an angle that can show it being isolated. I've been luckier in the past with better light, but I just grabbed it as I was passing and thought I would chuck it in to show how high the tide was 😊👍

@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery 3 года назад
Hi Paula, you could use the tripod to try and steady things, but you'd have to hang onto it. Five days later it's still blowing a gale here. Completely relentless! As for YouTogs, I heard on the grapevine that Joe got fed up with it and just decided to switch it off. Didn't bother telling anybody, but to be honest I think that was pretty symptomatic of how things had run on past its sell by date. Bit too much politics for my liking, which is why I moved on a while ago. 😊👍

Nice images David - not tempted to put a 10 stop on ;-) too windy I expect. Also a new tripod?
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery 3 года назад
I did think long and hard about going for a sick stop, because the light was quite low and that would've got me about a two or three second shutter. Which would've worked quite well based on the amount of movement in the water. And I could've blended that with a fast shutter of the church. The only problem was that the only location worth doing that was far too close to the waves and I was getting drenched in seconds. So the image would've been totally unusable. The lesson is to go back again with a longer lands and get away from the worst of it. But I need to do some research beforehand to find the shot that makes it worthwhile. Might be an interesting exercise, and I might well vlog that as a comparison. 😊👍
