Yeah, I mean, not even schools can do this. Believe it or not, a school drama club is not allowed perform for the public a copyrighted play that’s still running on Broadway. Let alone change the lyrics!! 😬
I do know that when a High school performs a Broadway show, they must purchase the rights to use it. Not only the sheet music, but also the script and the sound tracks. Our last High school play paid $600 to be able to perform a Dolly Parton play.
My school’s pat show was Percy Jackson. And yes. All rights were paid by the school. But everyone else had to pay or help to pay for other stuff like the costumes and stuff. It was an overall success, even though I was in it and had a minor role. I am more suited to minor roles.
@ashley1994 how would they not? you can literally research everything off of the internet. not to mention the drama/arts teacher/s should know this or if they don't they should research first before approving the plans of the club. never ever plagiarise another person's work, especially when it involves the academia. if you can't even be bothered to research your "planned" play then don't be in it. rehearsals alone will take a lot of time and dedication.
What's wild to me is that you can arguably use the original version as a good sermon about the perils of pride, envy, and adultery, showing how each character overcame it or fell victim to it, but they just decided stealing it and making their own version was the best choice

I don't think that's what's happening. I think they made a huge mistake with the copyright issue but it's definitely not anything bigger than them changing the lyrics to suit the audience they want to reach. It's only a legal issue. If they buy the song to use then it'll be any other story about how a church changed the lyrics for their target audience which isn't a problem. The only issue is they did this illegally.

@@StKissa and as a person who does theater i would like to add to your absolutely true comment by saying not only did they steal the play, it was also the fact that rights weren’t bought. theyre taking away compensation from all the people in charge off directing and producing hamilton. if middle schools can buy rights to shows, a church in texas of all places definitely could if they saved up enough money. so clearly this wasn’t all that important to them morally. which (might i add) is ironic, seeing as it’s a *church.*
IKR? The Catholic church in particular has done this for centuries. They inserted Christmas day after Yuletide to make it into Christmas Eve. They tried to get rid of the Celtic Halloween to make it into the eve of All Saints Day. Same story with Easter, the Olympics and many others

As a conservative Christian, a Hamilton fan, and someone who did theatre for years, this is the most cringe-worthy, disgusting piece of plagiarism I have ever seen, and the literal worst way to be a witness for Christ. Also their Eliza was insanely pitchy, their choreography looked like my 3-year-old niece's ballet recital, and don't get me started on the costumes. And normally I wouldn't go hard with the criticism, but again, this is a disgusting and illegal sin they've committed so they deserve every bit of it. There is not one bit of this they should be proud of.
I understand why you're angry, but I believe all of the blame should go towards the director instead of the performers. The director made the decision to illegally change the lyrics, while the performers would've just listened to them and followed along despite it being cringe-worthy. It's not the performer's fault they're being led by someone brainless enough to do this.
The fact they low key sucked is a reason to just get over it… If it was broadway actors I definitely get it but it wasn’t… So corny CALM DOWN LITTLE BB!!

As a Christian, I actually find the original much closer to a lesson about God than the reproduction. It teaches very deeply on pride, envy, lust, faith, and many other topics. Sometimes it’s not the words you say, but the words you don’t say.

As someone who is a Christian and a Hamilton fan. I think it's wrong to steal other people work. If they have the talent to change the lyrics. Why didn't they come up with their own play?
I don't see anything wrong with this... it's just some church play, if it were some gæ thing that would be totally fine. they're not gonna call up disney and ask if they can reenact a dumb play

Man, changing lines just completely changes the play itself and makes a mockery of the work that was put in by the creators of the original work. I did theater in high school and college, and we never re-wrote any of the scripts. We also didn't put on any plays that were still on broadway. I think the most modern one we did was probably You're A Good Man Charlie Brown.

It wasn't a sermon, it was an alter call and he called for a long list of different things the Bible that classify as sin. So they could pray. I mean... ot is a church after all. A Bible believing church. If you don't agree with the Bible that's you're choice... but remember, we ALL have reedom of religion. So if I believe the Bible when it says homosexuality is sin then it's okay.

In the 1960s and 1970s there were church musicals sometimes inspired by “secular “ musicals, but were usually significantly more different from the original inspiration than this one. There was one called “Natural High” which was apparently inspired by “Hair”. There were others that were more original and couldn’t be traced back to another source.

I remember Lin Manuel had to write Hamilton for SIX YEARS, only for them to take it away in a matter of minutes. I'm all about faith, but I hope that they did it in a correct matter. It is still in Broadway and they hadnt asked permission to anyone from the original production that can rule this as plagiarism, and changing the lyrics to top it is not a great move on their part. But I hope people wouldn't blame the actors/actresses, but only the ones who made this happen
What I find funny is that Hamilton already has Christian references. Hamilton says a part which is “I see the cross at church on the door…..and I pray….. I’ve never really done that before.” LIKE THIS WASNT NECESSARY

There's a phrase in Bible were Jesus Christ said, " GIVE TO CAESAR, WHAT IS DUE TO CAESAR " it means give credit what is rightfully is due to that person! SO THE CHURCH SHOULD HAVE ASKED THE OWNER FOR HIS OR HER AUTHORIZATION FIRST.
Well if you're going to do a production of any show/musical, you not only need to pay for the use of it but you MUST get the permission by either the creator OR the publishing company if you plan on changing and doing any rewrites of the material.
Changes have to be authorized, in writing, by the playwright. The publisher or licensing company will refer any questions on changes to the playwright who may, or may not, allow them.
I’m a Christian and I love that a church wanted to do Hamilton BUT what they did illegally is not okay. I don’t know who’s idea it was but that person should’ve known better! Goodness gracious.
Copyright. Look up the definition to that word. Even praise and worship leaders can sue a church without proper permission and payment for singing their songs. The church I attend pays a yearly fee to be able to sing Contemporary Christian music. They give you an ID number and you show that on the screen in the church and online so people know that you paid for the right to use. Therefore you won't get in legal trouble. I hops this church stops this play and considers the wrong they did.

Especially writing, composing, and creating a Broadway musical. Copyrights is giving respect and deserved ownership over one's work. If you didn't work hard in creating it, then don't steal it. Nikola Tesla dealt with the same issues, other inventors stealing his blue prints and ideas. He would reply with saying, they stole them because they couldn't create anything of their own. It's about integrity. Jesus didn't steal! All he did was give. He had nothing but respect for those he came to serve. So we should follow those same footsteps.

If they want to write their own play, then do it, but they can't take a Broadway musical, change a few words, and then produce a play from it. If that was the case, I can open a fast food restaurant by the name of "McDonald's" and sell whatever I want. Does the church think, just because they're a church, doesn't have to buy rights to use materials that even a play being performed at a junior high school must do?

Remember when churches had their own ideas for plays? Man. I didn’t even know people went to church anymore…mine shut down this year after they were caught hustling the teens choir I used to be apart of.
Of course many, many millions go to Church every week in the USA. The scientific accuracy of the Bible ( round Earth and jet streams and man from and soil and much more) is very important as well.
That’s really impressive how good their production looked. I mean for a free event that’s amazing. God bless you guys for volunteering your time to share the love of Jesus and the hope we have in salvation! I hope some attendees got saved (gave their life to Jesus!)
Hamilton isn’t supposed to be about Jesus. They didn’t do some great thing. This is called plagiarism-also known as stealing-and it’s illegal. Nothing about this is “impressive”. They also lied that they *did* have permission from Lin, which was not true. Not sure if you know this but two of the 10 commandments is “Don’t Steal” and “Don’t Lie”.
Regardless of the efforts of the church forgetting about copyright purchases, we shouldn't really undermine their efforts when rehearsing their version of this production. We cant blame everyone who was involved in this (a hundred people or so) when one guy at the very top screwed up. Everyone else spent countless hours for weeks to put this show together and we should show some respect to that

I am Catholic, and during our school plays in Catholic school (we often did Disney movies), you had to get the rights in order for the music and access to the scripts. I’m sure that whoever owned Hamilton would have lent out the rights to the church if they were willing to pay for it.

no literally 😭 i saw a video of hamilton's "death monologue" from this, and when he suddenly replaced "planting seeds in a garden you'll never get to see" it just felt like a straight slap in the face. i was NOT prepared. "jesus christ, you sent for me!" LMFAOOOOO.

This is like that once instance where a Christian mother decided to rewrite jk rollings work of Harry Potter books and taking out all the magic keeping names changing the subject of the plots to that of Christianity kept same flow a changed words here and there. Completely ripping off the author's work so the boys could have the proper Christan harry Potter experience. I was flabbergasted.
The curious thing about HP is that, if you go by the holidays the students observe, most of them appear to be CofE. Magic is just something they can do, it's not their religion.
I grew up in a Potter's House church, which is essentially another branch in the same congregation as the Door. And can confirm, they did this type of thing ALL the time, not just with Broadway productions either. They used to put on concerts that would entirely consist of popular songs (i.e. Evanescence's "Bring Me to Life" or Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away") except they would change the lyrics to reflect God's love or some other agenda they were pushing
Ik that churches in the past have done some stuff that's was probably illegal but this is honestly one of the dumbest thing a church could do and think it would be ok by showing it to a public audience
