i meditate and i'm not going to stop because I've been doing it for 8 years everyday and it has become my way of life its now a habit. i do believe Andrew that its not going to make a big difference because i learned that actions change your brain much more effectively. when you meet someone who has social anxiety its because the practiced avoiding people and there brain is trying to keep them safe so they don't take action and then that becomes there habit. exposure therapy will help but you have to practice often. feel it to heal it get used to doing things uncomfortable and don't over do it take small steps so you don't burn out and turn back to what is comfortable.

I meditate and do mindfulness. I quit smoking and drinking coffee a few months ago. At the same time. Without rehab or external assistance. Meditation and mindfulness works when there's action involved. But you're right that people use it as a crutch of avoidance. Faith without works is dead, therefore meditation without action is pointless. I deal with anxiety, but I actually got further with meditation and mindfulness because everything in my life became a teacher instead of something to escape from. Not to say I don't need a break from things. Who doesn't?

As a Coach, with all due respect for the guest, I also beg to differ. It's scientifically proven that meditation shrinks the "brain device" that is responsible for our emotional hijack, the amygdala. It takes roughly 8 weeks of regular practice, and then continued practice, but it does work. Do Yoga followed by meditation and experience your anxiety levels sharply go down. I agree that journaling also works, that's also scientifically proven. Also, it is not really about left brain and right brain, it's about neuro cortex, on the one hand, and emotional and reptilian brain, on the other hand.

@@Alem_Mehari I think you got the concept of meditation wrong . In meditation you don't stop your thoughts , you just dont attach to them . Thought keep coming, or should I rephrase.... THOUGHTS KEEP GOING from your mind, just like bubbles escaping the aerated drink when you open the bottle. Thoughts dont come, thoughts are going away from your mind ( just like the bubbles) . You are the one who is holding on to it, let go ... dont cling to it, dont attach to it, watch them arise and watch them go

A neuroscientist and psychologist here with over 29 years of experience at university, sorry to this spy fellow, but he needs revision. Meditation absolutely helps those with anxiety and stress. It's more of a coping mechanism and yes, it can distract people, but this enables them to realign the nervous system Fight-or-Flight sympathetic response so that they can think rationally through the situation. It also bolsters resilience for future episodes of anxious thoughts. Wim Hoff breathing, cold therapy, and breathe work also help to bolster resilience and reduce anxious thoughts. The three breath vagal releasing procedure alone reduces anxiety and nervous system responding. Geeze, I don't like this guy becoming the guru for all things. Folks, he's agency and and never left.

Not to mention everything in his "heavy scientific explanation" is vastly misrepresenting the dynamics of a human brain and it's individual areas. Most of what he said lacked substance. The little substance it had was mostly wrong. He could have just said "write a journal and be mindful". However the video showcases perfectly, how a guru/charlatan operates and skews the narrative (it also provides a good example of how the frame control and manipulation, typical of Cluster B disorders, can look).

Im not at all a fan of aurelius, so idk what that part of meditation is about. In india, meditation has a very different meaning than what is popularized in the west. The basis for meditation - observing of thoughts feelings and wishes - mental stillness, and mental focus - these are basically just the very basics to actually enable meditation. As well as a WELL TRAINED visualization. Then that is used to gain control over the elements - via mantras or imagination. Here with elements, we never mean the physical elements. Fire means imagination, air thought, water emotion or "energy". Earth is the ego, that binds these three - will intellect and feeling - together and forms the mental body. It can also be seen as action. Space finally means consciousness itself - awareness. The ground on which deep sleep, dream and waking state are based on. It is the only thing that counts. only because of that, does ANYTHING matter at all. Indeed one could say without observers it is not even relevant if a universe exists. That universes can exist outside of observers is not proofen. The idea that we are living organisms in a physical universe, which developed brains, is anthropologistic poppycup. It is the lowest of delusions. The self is like mother-of-pearl and the universe is the illlusion of silver in that. The universe is our inner world projected outwards. It has no existence outside of the observer. One could say the universe is the observers systemstate. The positivistic worldview we have today, is the smallest possible box to trap a mind with. It is useful to the system that we think "oh i am a random bunch of cells and senses". Better than that is the view that "i am spirit". Even better is the view "i am everything". The observer enjoys the states of sleep dream and wake. He, shiva, eats (enjoys) these. They have no independance of him. It is fascinating how the senses are tied into our minds - and how they process information. Control over the senses, and a state of natural wonder - that is called yoga. Objects, senses and subjects, these are again these three. Which are enjoyed by one. If we dont start to move more in such a direction of thought, we will not be able to avert our own destruction. I agree with the notion, that on these matters, he is no authority. Meditation, from zen, to dhyana - is the natural state of the self. To be outwardly focussed and confused, is an UNNATURAL state, that is produced by our school system and is harmful for everything in us - it is criminal that we do not learn to meditate as children. The natural product of such untrained mind is exactly the world we can see - aggressive people, who harm others, greed, lust, and every single stupidity rules. And now with the algo we sold ourselves off to the WORST parts of society. Big tech. I say that as a software programmer. I am good at it. But i do not believe in it. It would be better we still used horses instead of cars. Our society is trimmed on stress. And thats deadly. literally. I have very little good to say about the develllopment since the millennium. Literally everything is on the worst possible trajectory politically economically and socially. As krishnamurti said, it is no sign of good health to be adapted to a sick society. Listening to those who are paid to make society sicker, is certainly not the way forward. Its interesting - but when i listen to him, i always wonder - what is his angle - why does he propose this - exactly because he worked for langley. Everything is mental... That there is matter outside of the mind, is not proofen and cant be proofen. For what we see and hear is just information processed by our minds. And that which is processed is eaten by that inner enjoyer. There is no truth or meaning outside of that which is undecayable. Breath is thought. for when we are aware of the breath, the mental BS stops. Will is vision. What we see is what we believe. Energy is emotion. We eat truly with our senses, and that influences who we are tomorrow. He who can steer the senses, is his own master, and masterless. Hence it is no surprise to me that a CIA agent is not a fan of meditation. If you master your senses, then his organization will become as useless as a headmounted toiletpaper-dispenser.

This guy is confusing meditation techniques. He doesn't have much idea of meditation. There are several different meditation techniques. But two major ones are: 1. Mindfulness(vipassana)/Zen meditation and 2. Breathing meditation(anapanasatti). He is talking about "Breathing meditation" in which one sees the event/distration and then, get back to the breathing. But Mindfulness meditation is NOT just avoiding 'event/distraction'. It is about being 'aware' of the distration and stay with it as long as it lasts without being judgmental about it. It means, mindfulness meditation or Zen meditation teaches one to not react to the event; rather stay with it, and learn and grow from the event. This is a seriously powerful technique to reduce anxiety, fear and gain new insight as well as peace of mind. Please, don't claim something if you don't understand it in depth....
@sanekabc
@sanekabc 3 месяца назад
It is difficult to find a consistent definition of what mindful practice is. Your explanation is the best one I have heard regarding the distinction between mindfulness practice and watching your breath which are usually explained as the same thing. Also, mindfulness is usually described as being mindful of what you are doing, like washing the dishes etc. and returning to the activity if thoughts or feelings arise which is the same as watching the breath. Also, we need to make a distinction between the state of mindfulness and the practice of mindfulness. Most of the practices out there are a form of thought/emotional bypassing as Andrew asserts here.
@DesignDesigns
@DesignDesigns 3 месяца назад
@@sanekabc you are right. A part of Mindfulness practice actually is about being 'aware'(of the present moment/activities)..... Another imporatant practice of "mindfulness" meditation is(and even breathing/focus meditaion) is being aware of both 'focused' attention and diffused attention. We have two different attention types working at any moment. One is focused(conscious) another is like the peripheral one(unconscious).....Practicing both is important... One important thing is, there are 10 different stages of Meditation. And breathing meditation is in stage 2,3....then, the meditator, after successfully completing those stages, get to Mindfulness practice...Stage 4,5 and so on...and then, to the more deeper ones..... Buddha actually started his meditation practice with 'breathing'/focus meditation under the supervision of his teachers/gurus. But then, he realized breathing meditation is not gonna take him to liberation, and therefore, he abandoned breathing meditation. He then discovered Mindfulness meditation.....and adopted it. Mindfulness meditation is Buddha's greate discovery. Breathing meditation was in practice in India long before Buddha started meditation practice.
@laurakassama9092
@laurakassama9092 3 месяца назад
Usually, meditation techniques can be classified as either insight (vipassana) or concentration (samadhi). Mindfulness can be applied to either type of practice. Full absorption into a concentration practice lacks mindfulness because the mind is absorbed into the object of meditation. Andrew Bustamante is correct that a lot of the apps and practices in the mainstream are useless for overcoming strong emotions or rewriting the thinking process. Concentration practices are good for bypassing other experiences or negative thoughts. They are not a long term solution for change but they can be helpful for creating more calm in one’s life.

As Buddhist I argue that the wrong meditation is not useful. The right meditation calls you right into the moment, to be absolutely present, not sitting on a beach far away. that is a different type of mediation. So while I agree that the speaker is partly right... dreaming of a beach while there is a danger in from of you is useless... the right meditation brings you clearly into the moment and slows/stops the right brain activity. You don't have time to journal when there is a clear and present danger.

The dude is correct about meditation/mindfulness etc. in the way that it is misunderstood and monopolized on in the modern world like that. That would be true of his crap to some degree as well. However the effective method for real progress he's approximating, is in its self an approximation of "meditation" with respect to the genuine process of getting better in a fundamental way via a legitimate training method that works. If he was switched on, he would express his crap from other points of view to illustrate this. The fact that he doesn't, makes it more likely that he isn't really that on to it. Not true about Meditation being a right brain thing. Ultimately, the purpose is to synchronize both hemispheres so that the waveforms do a kind interference pattern, where a 'Space' is formed between them, that essentially opens up the "third eye", i.e. cognitive suspension and actual mind power. These CIA people all know this actually. The video has some good little takeaways but it's also a bit watered down and a disservice to real mind-power meditation. Hopefully he get's better. Interestingly, he talks about a way of working with the mind-taking time before drawing conclusions and not take the first emotional reaction as real, thereby avoiding being swept away by irrational fears, which is quite an accurate description of meditative skills. Then he says that meditation doesn't help with fears and anxiety and might even make them worse by distracting from the present experience. It seems like he doesn't know too much about meditation. Particularly mindfulness is about being in the present moment, staying with what is, and resisting the urge to react, it's about remaining uninvolved for a time, which helps to respond more wisely, without falling prey to your likes , dislikes, worries and fears. Following guided meditations where someone is trying to create images in your mind is something different, of course. Mindfulness actually helps you face the present experience and understand your fears and all the other things that come up in your mind.

I must say I disagree with much of his characterization of meditation and mindfulness. Visualizing “sandy beach with waves” (paraphrasing) as he describes is just one element. Good mindfulness training teaches you to be present, focused and engaged in the here and now by first training awareness. Awareness of thoughts, emotions and physical distractions. With increased levels of awareness you can reframing and taking action that builds capacity to deal with fear, anxiety and stress.

They all give the brain and system the ability to think clearly in stressful situations. Sometimes you benefit from clearing out all stress before taking any action, to better know what triggers you.

Meditation is not visualisation. It’s about being in the state of watchfulness so you can have clarity. That means being the watcher of both the right side and left. After some time you will get better at being less reactive. So meditation in that sense can help the brain process reality as a whole. Journaling is nothjng new and is also a form of meditation. This is a narrow and limited understanding of meditation.

For my ref-> --------------------------- Summary and Breakdown of Key Points: Understanding Fear and Anxiety: Fear and anxiety are whole-brain responses involving both the left (logical) and right (emotional) hemispheres of the brain. Both hemispheres receive sensory inputs simultaneously, but the right hemisphere, which processes information through biases and assumptions, reacts faster than the logical left hemisphere. Left vs. Right Brain Processing: The right brain processes information quickly based on emotions and biases, while the left brain takes longer as it relies on rational thought and systematic problem-solving. This difference in processing speed often leads to immediate feelings of fear or anxiety before the logical brain can provide a rational perspective. Physiological Response: The right brain’s quicker response results in immediate physical symptoms of fear or anxiety (e.g., increased heart rate, sweating). The left brain eventually provides a rational explanation, which can lead to a sense of relief once it catches up. Coping Strategies: Delay Conclusion: Allow a few seconds of discomfort before reaching a conclusion to give the logical brain time to process the information and provide a rational counter to the emotional response. Stress Inoculation and Exposure Therapy: Practice taking small risks regularly to increase risk tolerance and improve the ability to process anxiety and fear rationally. Avoid Meditation as a Crutch: Mainstream meditation techniques can serve as distractions rather than solutions, preventing genuine improvement in handling anxiety. Journaling: Journaling helps by engaging both hemispheres of the brain. Recording moments of anxiety and the logical counterarguments can provide insights and reduce irrational fears over time. This practice helps identify patterns and provides evidence to counteract future anxiety. Decision-Making Under Stress: Recognize that most decisions do not require immediate action. Allowing time for the logical brain to process information can lead to better decision-making. Understand that the sense of urgency is often false, and taking a moment to breathe and think can reduce stress. Key Takeaways: Fear and anxiety stem from the brain's simultaneous processing of sensory inputs, with the emotional brain reacting faster than the logical brain. Giving yourself time to let the logical brain catch up can help mitigate irrational fears. Practicing stress inoculation and exposure therapy, rather than relying on meditation, can build resilience against anxiety. Journaling can document and rationalize anxious moments, providing a record that helps manage future anxiety. Most decisions can wait, allowing time for a balanced, less stressful response.

Calling meditation a crutch is a bit silly. First of all, the word meditation is an umbrella term for a lot of different kinds of techniques. Most of which are designed to get you to a place of greater awareness, not distraction. Ironically, meditation is useful to combat the endless distractions of mental chatter. This is not the same thing as a 'visualization', which can sometimes fall under the meditation umbrella. The point is, there are many types of meditation, and you can only find out what works for you by trying in earnest. I like Andrew, and he is very smart, but he certainly doesn't know everything. I'll leave it at that.

Haha exactly. This guys advice will drive you right into overthinking. Do you also feel uncomfortable watching that video. Logic is done when you have real anxiety or compulsory disorder. Trying to find some hold in logic explanations makes it worse. If your logic says everything is good but you don't feel like that, you try to find another logic. This game will never end. This is only solvable on the emotional side. Where is love fear will go away. And focus on body sensations. Use the mind to control the body (like slow breathing) and then the mind will be controled by the body. Relax your body and surrender that there is no logic solution, only love can help.

Your anxiety stems from neither. While the hemispheres are slightly different in their dominance regarding certain tasks, this is much less significant than he represents, especially in regards to more complex activity - such as anxious thoughts for example. This difference, for all intents and purposes, is irrelevant outside of medical practice/theory. The guy is a charlatan, nothing else.

As someone who meditates a lot I can say, that in my experience, meditation helps considerably with long term, chronic stress. I think what Andrew is saying is that short term stress is not helped by meditation and he is in some ways correct. However, practising meditation calms all systems of the body, makes us more aware of our surroundings, grounds us, controls our breathing and calms the intensity of stress reactions (if practised regularly); the calmness produced stills our flight or fight mechanism which helps the left brain to respond and function more quickly. Meditation, or the type practiced by many, is not about escaping to a beach in your mind it is about being truly 'present' and aware.

I'm not sure the theology term for being a demon slayer, but praying OFFENSIVELY against negative things in the spirit realm works! I use the format that Yahuah Christ teaches. I first acknowledge the creator of the universe then I ask for forgiveness and forgive others & release them. Then I petition for holy Spirit to come in. That's when I go to town! Praying OFFENSIVELY using words in scripture, promises of God and Psalms to slay the demons! I pray against spiritual attacks like depression, financial delay or obstacles. God says we humans have the power to bless and perform miracles just like Christ. So I do that. As proof I posted this response earlier but is was deleted. Why delete a comment that teaches others how to pray? What's the harm in that? It's because it works!! They know what we can do when we consider the spirit realm in our circumstances. Hope it works for you brother!! ❤️

Learn a panic attack breathing method. Breathing in fully in 2 quick breaths (filling the solar plexus area) and breathing out slowly (purse lips) for longer than the you breathed in. 2 in 7 out. Activates the parasympathetic and eliminates fear/ anxiety instantly. Also lowers blood pressure if used for 3 minutes or more. Meditation can be used to find out who you truly are and this eliminates fear / anxiety in your life. It can slow down your negative reactions naturally until they don’t even happen anymore. Leads to a loving non-judgmental peaceful perspective.

I totally disagree with him on this point! The mechanics of it is a good explanation, and could help people move into the logical brain easier, but the comment about meditation not helping… absolutely not! At least not mindfulness meditation. Number one, a lot of times anxiety shows up when a person has repressed anger. It’s a byproduct of that. Number two anxiety can also show up when a person is Living with or hanging around a lot of toxic people. Narcs are instant anxiety inducers and sometimes it’s so subtle, you don’t even notice because it’s become a baseline for a person. For me when I was dealing with debilitating anxiety “ out of the blue” in my late 20s, early 30s, the best thing I found when I was in the middle of a full on freak out moment, was to ask in my head “Where is the bottom of this?” and imagine it like a pond that I was diving down into. When you run away from anxiety, it gets bigger, but when you do your best to turn and face it head on, it gets smaller and dissipates. This method did not work for my 16yr old child but between what I’ve experienced with my child and myself, there is NO WAY during one of those super intense anxiety attacks, would I be able to “journal “!!. Doing very simple things however, like … blowing out every ounce of air you possibly can from your lungs. Breathe in only a little bit, and then again breathe out as much air as you possibly can, doing this until you feel a shift. You will feel your body calm down because anxiety causes you to top breathe. My opinion is that your mind lets you into anxiety, but during a full-blown attack, you need to deal with the body itself calm it down. Vagus nerve reset exercises (tilting your head and putting your eyes in the opposite direction) are also helpful. Ultimately, every person has to find whatever method works for them because there’s never one size it’s all. I do definitely agree with what he says about taking small risks and then building up from there as a way to help anxiety as well. The other reason anxiety shows up is, it’s your body‘s way of telling you about information in your surroundings that you’re ignoring and you need to put your attention on. You can also ask “ What information that my body is trying to show me, that I am ignoring?” And just see what shows up emotionally or physically. Again, this is just mindfulness and it is a form of meditation. Meditating isn’t just sitting cross legged with your eyes closed trying to “ clear your mind”.

Don't forget desensitization through means such as EMDR. Desensitization has been researched since the 1950s and now has been developed into various methods and for many issues. Once desensitization has been completed for the panic or anxiety triggers in question, then the techniques in this video are much easier to do. In fact, they may even happen spontaneously. I've worked as a psychotherapist for anxiety and other problems since 1992. I think just about everybody should learn how to do a self-help form of desensitization to make themselves more resistant to anxiety triggers.

Andrew offers a useful tool to put in the toolbox. I love meditation. It helps. But journaling and processing with logic helps too. Right brain and left brain. I want to offer a third tool: detaching in stressful situations. Observing the own emotions but not acting on them. It is difficult, especially with anger and panic; training is necessary. Lets take a heated argument with your spouse. You will tell her or him that you are going to leave the situation and talk it over when the storm has calmed. Dont let yourself get dragged into these primal emotions- keep distance. Does it work for me? Well... sometimes. I am working on it.
