It blows me when musicals cast famous ppl that aren’t known to have a huge vocal range (or just generally can’t sing) to play characters that are supposed to be the main singers and it’s noticeably terrible, they hired Ciara to sing and dubbed over her voice so clearly they knew 😭

That is Bishop Marvin Winans. He is one of the greatest male vocalists EVER! He was the lead of his family group The Winans, big brother to Bebe and Cici Winans and his ex wife is Vickie Winans, one of gospel's great women vocalists. He is also step father to Mario Winans. He was also a close friend and confidant to the late great Whitney Houston, whom he eulogized at her funeral.

In my house, he is most notable for playing Satan from the Tales of the Crypt movie Demon Knight that starred Jada Pinkett. A classically shlocky horror film and he CHEWS the scenery. Never saw a man have more fun being the Devil than Billy Zane lol

I was shook when I realized you were reacting to this movie!! I was lucky to work with Vy Higginsen at her Arts foundation in Harlem -- she wrote this play about her sister Doris Troy's life after winning a night at the Apollo Theater, and they just recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of the musical. She does a lot for the black community and is super respected over here. It was a culture shock realizing her legacy up close and personal. Her foundation is called "Mama Foundation for the Arts" if anyone wants to check it out and support (and the original musical is better than the film lol)

One of my favorite extracurriculars I’d ever been a part of was the gospel choir in high school. Pretty much every song for that choir was learned by ear in a call and response fashion. Not a whole lot of sheet music, if any at all. Which was different from every other choir I had ever been a part of, (but hey, I’m pretty much white as the driven snow, so), and I loved it. It felt so freeing and was such a loving environment. I miss that.

As a white non-christian man living outside the US in the 00's I have just about zero comment to make on... pretty much anything in this movie but ONE thing. ANd that is that her manager is played by Billy Zane whom I as a nerd must point out as the voice of Ansem Seeker of Darkness, the main (sssort of) bad guy from Kingdom Hearts the videogame cros-over fever dream. He also played the Phantom, a pulp hero from the 1930's, in an attempt at a modern revival in the late 90's movie, so there's at leas SOMETHING I can add to the discussion!

The name of the manager is Billy Zane. He was in that movie you did with the college girl and her roommate who stalks her and kills her friends. Billy Zane played her professor who was known as this great fashion guru type dude. He tried to sleep with her and assaulted her, but she got away, and her “psycho” roommate kills him.
