“Buying a humidor is like buying a piece of furniture…” In this video, Georgetown Tobacco’s Teresa Wessling takes you through what to consider when choosing a humidor, and how they work. She compares entry-level and high end humidors to illustrate what’s available on the market today and how they differ so you can find what’s right for you.

Here's my thoughts for the new guys: That's a gorgeous humidor, but for my money I'd rather go with something like a needone 16L (150) count. You can get one for pretty cheap online. It doesn't have an electric humidifier, but it does have temp control/air circulation, and comes with a digital hygrometer, these are far more accurate, and hold their calibration way longer. Skip the water tray, and just go with boveda packs. Boveda packs really do the trick as they can reabsorb excess humidity. if you want to get fancy they make a metal cage that holds two, and this will keep it off your sticks and protect them. Definitely go for the biggest humidor you can manage, especially if you have friends that enjoy cigars, you may find yourself needing to care for another box suddenly as a gift! A couple other things she missed: The 70/70 rule is bull, i keep mine at around 65H/68F and they smoke way better, but feel free to play around and find what you prefer. If you are aging/storing sticks long term, you'll probably want to air out and rotate your stock. This involves completely replacing all the air in you humidor (just leave it open for a few minutes and move some fresh air in, and rotating your stock. If you have whole boxes put the bottom layer on top, and visa versa. Or if you have a handful of singles just flip them upside down. Do this every 3-6 months, otherwise ammonia from the decomposition can ruin the flavor. Also if you have a lighted or glass front humidor, keep it dark most of the time, uv rays ruin cigars!

I’m new to this but I do understand science really well. From what I’ve learned systems that require one to add/monitor water are waiting to break or malfunction and cause mold. If you’re buying a nice box, using a tupper wear or just an old mason jar Boveda packs are the way to go. AND! You don’t have to throw them away! At $6-$7 each you can drop a Boveda pack in a ziplock with distilled water and rejuvenate them INDEFINITELY! Humidors are great for collecting and showing off your sticks but skip the watering and go straight to Boveda packs.

Bovedas are great, but don’t discount traditional humidifiers ;) With distilled water they work exceptionally well and last for years!

The lighting & shooting set up is not as good as previous cigar 101, but still good quality video. Love the talk.

I would advise to go ahead and buy just a bit more than you think you might need. If you invest in very good accessories and take care of them their value will appreciate.
