I recently saw great analysis on cigarettes in film. Sometimes the best parts of films are when characters do small things, when there is subtle acting in play, for example, the peanut wrapper in No Country for Old Men. Similarly, cigarette scenes help the actors telegraph their character without any flamboyant over the top acting, just subtle cues and gestures that deliver a real and interesting character. Moreover, the cigarette in the mouth allows for a moment of silence, without dialogue, allowing the atmosphere, mood, etc. settle. Wong Kar Wai is a great example of this, using cigarette scenes to keep dialogue to a seeming minimum while still reflecting the characters emotional and mental state.
beforee 2000 they ALL smoked- now its all bullshit herbal crap- you can tell the real ones on set that smoke their brands like emma roberts and emily blunt
If people wanna talk trash about cigs in cinema, they clearly don’t understand the need to portray pain behind a character. They do it for a reason and it’s necessary to the role. It’s not glorifying it, just adding to the characters depth. If you don’t listen to all the ads that’s been spelt out since (at least) the early 90s, it’s your decision just like drinking alcohol
I think it's fair to criticize how cigarettes have been portrayed a lot in cinema, it's not a condemnation or misunderstanding of why it's used to portray damaged characters but there's other ways of portraying a character in pain besides having them smoke cigarettes and not everyone who smokes cigarettes does it to deal with pain. in my experience most just do it cause it's enjoyable to them and it's hard to quit or as a way of managing anxiety. it's been done a lot and could be validly criticized as being a lazy trope at this point. Just look at how many comments are saying they are craving a cigarette just from watching this video 😅
Yeah, Cigarettes are Bad for your Healths because if your a Smoking Habit then you'll Kill you so I was going to say that don't Smoke Cigarettes and saying "I don't Smoke."
I’m a smoker - I can absolutely confirm that when I see people smoke in film, I want to… it has nothing to do with anything other than it basically reminds my mind that I need one lol.
Thanks for posting all these scenes in one video... I have a RU-vid playlist called "Smoking" with separate videos of Smoking in cinema I don't smoke... In 70-80s NYC, I grew up with My Father smoking... remember going to the grocery store and buying his cigarettes for him He's 84 now His Mom, grandma, lived to 96 yrs old... a smoker... My wife of 19yrs was a pack a day smoker before we wed... Our first getting to know each other moment was over a cigarette she was smoking on my cousins porch... She stopped before we got married... I've been an RN for 30+yrs and know Smoking is Bad for your health... I guess what I'm trying to say is... when I reflect back, I have nothing but FOND Memories about Cigarette smoking in my Life Now, I wouldn't encourage anyone to smoke, But despite my healthcare background, at the same time I won't discourage anyone either After all, this is America, Land of the Free So... Smoke'em if you got'em...😊
@@AwesomeRepix I now got used to smoking one cig a day, more if I need to take my meds, cause they makes me crave cigs for some reason. But I’m really happy that I cut down to only one smoke a day, cause once it used to be half of a pack
My favourite part of films are when the actors are smoking, eating, drinking etc. I just cant explain why but it feels so relatable yet so charismatic for some reason.
Sweet Cigarette Pull you out With my fingertips Take you just Between my lips Light you up You start to blow Smoking hot I can't say no Sweet Cigarette
movies make it look cooler than it is, the actors don't use real cigarettes and the smoke itself behaves differently. That martha scene in fight club is a perfect example
absolutely beautiful compilation i watched this on a daily bases for when i have a cigarette sometimes it is great! this is a lot too ask, but could you perhaps tell me the name of this movies? not all, but just some if you can thank you for this video
I'll admit i started to smoke because i thought it looked so cool, like many people do, but when i bought a vape just to smoke at home for those nic cravings i knew i had a problem. Stopped smoking 1 week ago i know its not much but I'm still happy.
I would only smoke for the aesthetic of it lol. I was thinking of buying the zero nicotine ones that actors use so I won't I get addicted. They're usually made from natural herbs like lavender and smell nice and are a lot less harmful than the real cigarettes.
Most actually smoke real ones, especially in movies showing a scene of smoking one time. Characters like thomas shelby use honeyrose, being a Chainsmoker. Truth is too many celebs already smoke, so smoking a real one adds to the realism,
This is why I watch many anti-smoking PSA's including Canadian female server Heather Crowe's. Heather Crowe passed away in 2006 inhaling second-hand cigarette smoke. I hate working in smoky restaurants since 2001 is that I am an anti-smoking activist all the time.
Yeh buddy not sure you can die from inhaling second hand smoke, very difficult to prove those sorts of things. Completely different to actually smoking.
its amazing that 3 minth after quitting i can now even this whole video with no issues. when i started quitting i has to stop peaky blinders haha. i smoked for 7 years. dont smoke. its horrible to kiss someone who s.okes besides
