Fantastic job, very well done, Floris. While on one hand I can feel the disappointment and can see how tired you were after this marathon (no wonder), on the other hand I must say you basically sacrificed your sub 3 marathon for the community, much appreciated. To be able to share what was there on race day, how it feels to stand on the start line and run the CIM. Thanks on behalf of the whole Extramilest community. And yes, time is just a number, there is always another and more chances to run fantastic races but when you are supported by friends who are watching and cheering, and they welcome you in the finish zone, I think that's alone why it's worth to be among such nice people! You have run several marathons and other races but it was interesting to see how emotional you became after acknowledging: I've done it! Another great run in the books! :-) Thanks for sharing your emotions so honestly. High five!

Thank you Csaba. It surely was a humbling race experience to me. When an 8 minute mile feels like a 6 minute mile effort wise, something surely was off. I am not going to lie, sharing these emotional clips feels very uncomfortable and vulnerable, yet it really was an emotional roller coaster of highs and lows, haha, so I decided to show it all. Appreciate your kind words! Cheers

Seeing your emotions at the end was incredibly inspiring. It was very raw and real, and I definitely appreciate seeing that. As for the humidity, I run/train in Baltimore, where summers are known for being incredibly humid. I've tried MAF here and sometimes it means I'm walking in order to keep a low HR. I was attempting to break 4:00 in NYC Marathon in November, and because of the humidity, running 9:00/mile pace was almost unbearable, and sometimes I couldn't hold that pace (mind you, that pace should feel relatively comfortable if that's my marathon goal pace). Once the temperatures started dropping, it became significantly easier. Paces became faster, and I was able to clock a 3:23:50 for my first marathon (7:47/mile pace), instead of the 4:00 hours (9:00/mile pace) I was aiming for. Because of the humidity, I was forced to slow down and build my Aerobic base. Because of the humidity, the bulk mileage was more difficult, but my base was continually being developed. My body adjusted to running for long periods of time, and also to run with a higher HR. By the time NYC Marathon came, my same HR for 9:00/mile pace was the same for about 8:00/mile pace! All that said, humidity really really affects our HR's and our running, but it's also "Poor man's altitude training". Thanks again for this raw honest post!

Thank you for sharing the intimate moments that make you who you are! Running it myself and finishing at 5:01:46 I was shooting for sub 5 and although much slower, I felt the same way you did. Loved your highlights, high-fives, busting through, the bridge energy boost, 26.2 finish line and most of all, graciously thanking all of the wonderful volunteers encountered every step of the way. Felt like I was running it all over again and I got choked up. Kudos to you Floris. 🙏

If you want to experiance high humidity and temperature at its peak , please come to Run in South India where I live, you will never forget that experiance. Body temperature will rise like anything,vital mineral loss by excessive swetting, cramps, you can't control your heart beats by slowing down.it just dont stop from rising untill you stop running. Thank you for sharing that wonderful family moment . I have a half marathon comming up on 22 Dec. looking forward to break 2 Hr, but as you mentioned here I am going to listen to my body first. Very well said ... at the end of the day it is a number!😊😊 The whole aim of us running (common people 😄) is to be healthier and happier. Once we did our effort and finish the race .., goal is achieved✊ On Friday December 6 I ran Abu Dhabi Marathon temperature was 23 c at 6 am with high humidity not less than 80 percent! My goal to do it under 3:40 ... nevertheless I finished in 3:48 with 11 minutes better than the last Marathon 🙈.. I am happy This Saturday I did 62 km in trail running with 1985 m of elevation 🙃🙃 I finished it in 8:46 .. improved my time with nearly 30 minutes 😜😜 it was very tough ... just sharing .. FLoris-how many marathons is this for you? My marathon career was a real roller coaster: 2:54 (age 18), 2:48 (one month later!) 3:14 (crash/burn/walk, 1:22 at 1/2) 2:49 (crash but not burn though some walking, 1:19 at half) 2:38 (age 22, nailed it but both knees were done at the end of season, didn't race again for 18 years). I learned so much from both successes and failures and thankful I can run all I want pain-free at 63 :)

Nice video. I'm just curious if you always run the races by HR. Whenever I try the HR is always 5-10 beats higher than in training at same pace, but on the other hand it doesn't feel like it's that high. In fact I just don't find it a reliable metric during the race, at least not to the point to base my decisions on it. Admitedly it could be I just don't have enough data as I don't race that much.

Loved the video. Your MAF advocacy and podcasts have revitalized my running. Sorry about your ride on the pain bus. Humidity is a killer so that may have been the culprit. Do you think you recovered from your extended MAF session? Also I wonder about all the cheer-leading during the race. Back in the day when I was a serious marathoner I needed to focus my mind and effort on that task at hand in order to PR. With all the cheerleading you were doing with others on the course this seemed more like a training run instead of a PR attempt. What do you think? Any reflections on that?
@FlorisGierman
@FlorisGierman 4 года назад
Dan Starcevich glad you enjoyed the video. Within the first 3 miles I already knew my PR was out of the window, I felt completely low on energy, body just didn't want to function right. The first 5 miles I didn't talk into the camera or to anyone else. Same here, when Im in goal race mode, cheering on others and high fiving can take additional energy. Once my PR attempt was out of the window, I wasn't going after any goal race time anymore and cheered on more other runners.

Thanks for sharing your race. It's not an easy thing to go through when things don't go as you had planned and hoped. I recently ran the Valencia Marathon and I had a PR in. Ind. training had gone well and I felt confident to go for it! HOWEVER.... I picked up a chest infection in the Monday before the race and it just did not shift. On the morning of the race I was really tired, wanted to go back to sleep after my breakfast and then, at the starting line I knew it would not be my day. After Mile 2 my legs were like jelly and I couldn't breathe. I basically went into survival mode and had a 24 mile mental battle where I was trying to ignore the voice telling me to give up. At 33k I couldn't run any more and started walking. That has never happen d to me before. I took another gel and walked 1km then decided to give running another try. I got round and finished it.......30 mins over my target time. Valencia was beautiful and everything was set up for it to be a great race but so thing, out of my control, got in the way of it. I was so frustrated, disappointed and a bit embarrassed to be honest. Someone did say to me that I should be proud because I didn't give up and I completed it. So, like you said..... I/we should not focus on the finishing time in this instance and should celebrate the success! The success of creating a dream; completing the training and completing the race. You can forever look at that medal and remember everything it took (from your mind, body and spirit ) to earn it! Congratulations my friend!

It is not about goal time all the time for any marathon run but immersing wholeheartedly in the atmosphere of the marathon event and your interactions with the crowds, volunteers and fellow runners that they came out to show their support that matter the most.

That guy bent over at the 8:57 mark in the grey shirt and pink shoes was ME! Unfortunately, the race didn't capture any video of me but you did so THANK YOU! I BQ'ed after 13 years of failing. If you have any more footage of that moment, I'd love to get it if possible.

Thank you Sir for the video. You remind me of my own struggles 2 weeks ago at the Singapore Marathon, hot (90 - 92°F) and humid (99-100%) due to a new 6pm start. I almost dropped out but dragged myself to the FL with an aweful time. It was so, so tough and I was demoralised. It was indeed a humbling experience to not be stubborn. Now I learnt to run slower when the body says it is bad. Let's train better and run faster another time. I know you will. I will too.

Wow, those are some challenging conditions, especially when the humidity is paired with the high temperatures. Well done on finding a way to get to the finish line. Nice work on learning to listen to the body. All the best on your running journey!

Congratulations Floris ! Thanks for sharing your experience with everyone. This race reminded me of the Boston Marathon I ran this year, rain at the start, full sun with humidity in the middle miles and more rain at the finish line. That humidity took it's toll in Boston as well, lots of runners off to curb rubbing out cramps. Even worse for us runners in the 4th wave was we never got in corrals, just walked to the start line, crossed the mat and speed up only to get behind the 7000 runners in the 3rd wave. The director was worried about lightning, so they wanted us to go asap without corrals. So, there are a lot of things that can change your race plan, but you handled it well my friend.

Thank you Floris for sharing this experience. You are giving good example showing how you handle highs and lows in and post race. Do you plan a follow up video of analyses, comparison of PR marathon training, shape and current one? I think that might be also beneficial for other to learn how to do post race training analyses and how to move forward with the training for next event.

When a race doesn't go according to plan, it's up to decide how to react to the situations at hand. I've written down several notes and learnings from my training and racing. Things that went well, and things that can be improved. I've shared most of this with my students and in a group coaching call for The Marathon PR Program. I prefer my RU-vid channel not to become "The Flo Show". There are several new videos and podcasts in the worlds with great guests. I'll be posting these in the coming weeks and months. Thanks and cheers!

i can relate Flo, i had a 16.5 km local club race this weekend, and the cold got the best out of me. i was in the lead till 9 km and then just could not keep it up, the heart rate was above lactate threshold by 3 minutes already! I still managed to finish the race with the support of fellow runners along the course, when I wanted to just call it quits. well done and respect.

Some races go accordingly to plan, while many times we have to adjust to plan B, C, D or make up new plans in the moment. Nice work on not calling it quits and finishing a challenging day!
