Cinecraft Flashback Friday Episode #45,
Title; On Location (Radio Program Series)
Client; The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. (1965)
The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company was an important client for Cinecraft. Over the years a dozen film projects were undertaken. But Cinecraft also did the production work on a series of 5 minute radio programs that CEI sponsored. The radio series was called: On Location.
The On Location radio program series started in 1961. I remember these short radio programs clearly from when I was a lad. The opening theme music is oh so familiar.
The On Location radio series was conceived, produced, and written by Jerry Turk. This particular episode of On Location was produced in 1965 and features Cinecraft. (Tip of the hat to Bob Schneider, Cinecraft alum, who had this episode in his personal collection.)
F. Jerome Turk, worked had his own writing business called Editorial Services. He rented office space at the Cinecraft building. Jerry is often credited with coining the phrase “Best Location in the Nation” that was the ubiquitous slogan of the Illuminating Company. His Plain Dealer obituary says… In 1961, he started "On Location" for the Illuminating Co. The five-minute spot aired daily on several stations for 18 years. He tagged along with all sorts of locals, from a parachutist to police motorcyclists.
This On Location episode tells the story of Ray Culley coming home to Ohio from Hollywood for a visit and staying to start Cinecraft, though it gets the start year wrong. (1939 not 1937…Lies, damn lies and radio programs!)
A trademark of the On Location radio series was the first word you heard the narrator, Bruce MacDonald, saying; “Listen!” That first word was then followed by some interesting natural sound from the location the story was talking about. For the Cinecraft episode the voice of Paul Culley is heard as the director calling out for the sound engineer to start his recording, and the stage hand to ring the alarm bell that warned all on the stage to be quiet.
So we’ve had a Flashback Friday series about Television Televised for the Austin Company, (but shot on film) and now a radio program about shooting movies in Cleveland. Next I will look for a Cinecraft video about making radio…there must be such a video in the vault.
