All voices, grunts, growls, background singers and choir are Avi's voice. He has a phenomenal range. He was classically trained and had an L.A. Opera House hire in hand when Scott Hoying found him to be the bass for PTX. His resonance is superb and I cannot find another bass I like as well as Avi's. This is his most well-known solo song, but anything you listen to from his solo catalog is amazing. I refer to his music as "soul-cleansing". This is the kind of amazing music he was holding inside of him in his final months with Pentatonix. He needed to break free from the group to unleash this magnificent art on the world!
Absolutely loved your reaction. Yes "this guy" cuts to the heart and soul of it. So powerful and such a beautiful voice. This song could be an anthem song for a movie. It has been featured on a tv show entitled resident alien. So many things this song could be about. Avi was leaving PTX and starting a new career... that was a big change. He had some personal struggles he was dealing with and he sings about them in another of his songs Quarter Past Four. Change on the Rise also seems a bit foretelling. We have experienced so many changes in the world over the past couple of years that have been rising up. On another note, for something a little lighter, Adeline is an upbeat fun folk song about a time when he was smitten and in love. Looking forward to more Avi!!!!!!

For another of his solo works I really like Quarter Past Four and Aberdeen. Neither have the driving beat/force of this one but they have that folk music feeling. Great hopeful messaging and very personal.
All of Avi's solo music has a Folk/ Country / Americana vibe to it and although each is song different from the others they are all AMAZING! This really made my day! I love Avi's music and your reactions. Wonderful way to close the week. Thank you!

I'm not sure where you live, but Avi has a European tour scheduled to start in March 2022 in St. Petersburg, Russia, followed by Moscow, then other cities like Prague, Zurich, London, Paris, etc. I've been to 3 of his concerts, and they were 3 of the top 5 I've ever been to. Worth traveling for (I flew from San Francisco to Texas for the last 2 shows of his 2019 tour - well worth it!).
Yep. That's Avi Kaplan. I get vey strong Native American vibes from this. Magnificent. If you like Native American feels I recommend some Buffy Sainte-Marie who has been an amazing singer, song writer and advocate for Native Americans since the 60s. One of my favourites is a love song called "Until it's Time for You to Go" from 1965. Another with mystical vibes is "God Is Alive, Magic Is Afoot" from 1969. The latest album I have of hers is from 2015.

Both these groups don't have a problem doing beautiful serious songs and aren't afraid of doing the sillier songs they both have an amazing bass singer and sound SO good Geoff(jeff) Castelucci is the bass for Voice Play & has his own channel on you tube which is amazing. His music & readings showcase his mellow baritone & his VERY low bass notes. Tim Foust is the bass singer for Home Free & can rattle windows. So so good. Love that you were nervous before you even started this! And that you had to listen to it twice before “the interruption” which never came. Aviously you were blown away ;) He is truly a remarkable talent. All voices and sounds in this song are Avi apart from a small section of tambourine and synth organ. I’d recommend another one of his songs but they’re all fantastic so you can’t really go wrong. People will undoubtedly chime in with their favourites though. Thanks for reacting :)
Yayyy so happy you got to this! If you wanna feel at complete and utter peace, check out the video for “Otherside”. Also “Full Moon” is a sleeper masterpiece IMO, his layering is incredible, it’s dark and haunting
WOW Have been missing out. I must admit that I haven’t heard any of Avi’ solo work. This is SOOOOOO Great, what a super beat, but I sure do miss him with PTX. Will be listening to more of Avi for sure! Thank you for checking him out and sharing with us.

I understand being carried away by the song. I do wish you added a bit more commentary, but I loved the video anyway. BTW, at one point you mentioned "Country". I can understand the association, but I think this song is technically classified as "American Folk". Songs in that genre vary (they won't necessarily have a deep voice like Avi's) but if you want meaningful, powerful, and tribal that's a place to look. Or .. How about Mongolian? There is a group called the Hu using traditional instruments and some Mongolian throat singing. Much better to read the lyrics adapted from a centuries-old battle song which may have been sung by the forces of Genghis Khan, or maybe pre-warrior youth back home. On the 2nd or 3rd viewing try this: one minute into the video set the playback speed to 0.75. It's one of the few videos where a slower speed doesn't degrade and gives it a different character worth watching.

This is my favorite version of Avi's cover of "House of the Rising Sun", from his August 24, 2019 show in Dallas. (Sorry it's not in great focus, but when you're shooting on the fly, you don't know how well it's going to look. At least the sound is great.)
