This is a special 'Cinco de Mayo' story because you see so many people posting pictures here of themselves in traditional sombreros. On a trip into the interior of Mexico about 20 years ago (October, not May), I had one of those big brimmed hats (see photo) like the San Diego lifeguards wear. It helped to keep the sun off my neck, too. A fellow passenger in a "chicken" bus near Oaxaca asked me (in Spanish) if I was a fan of Pancho Villa? I said I was not particularly fond of the bandit side of his life. He then asked me if I wasn't a real fan, why I was wearing a Pancho Villa sombrero hat? I said I thought a sombrero was like what the mariachis wore. He told me a "sombrero" was any extra-wide brimmed hat. Who knew? You can learn things anywhere, even on a chicken bus. A "chicken bus" is my term for those stereotypical 3rd class, low fare, busses you see in the movies where people some people are carrying farm animals with them (think the movie Romancing the Stone). The bus I was riding with the guy was going from Oaxaca to Mitla. And yes, one lady actually was carrying a chicken with her. I usually looked for the cheapest fare I could find while traveling. That's how I could afford to travel all over southern Mexico and Guatemala back then. I've never had a traditional sombrero, or a cowboy hat, either, now that I think of it. - Travels with Phil copyrighted by Phil Konstantin -
