The live action Disney remakes overall aren't very good at all, but I do think Cinderella was the best of them. And you're right, that dress is EVERYTHING. Can't wait to see you recreate it!!!!

Agreed! I liked that it wasn't an exact recreation of the animation, but to be honest the costumes and the general aesthetic of the film are a huge chunk of the reason why I liked it.

Also helps that Cinderella was the only one from the scene-by-scene live actions that was old enough to justify it; Sleeping Beauty and Alice in Wonderland had a totally different approach and everything else is way too recent.

Thank you for bringing up the optical illusion. It always bothers me that no one notices how huge the skirt and shoulders are or even consider James natural waist size before ranting about corsets. I wear a corset everyday and I am never going back to modern bras.

Amen to that. I'm working on creating a corset for myself, but only corded, for support and warmth. (I'm the youngest in my office by 40. My office is an igloo.)

And thank you for making me feel even better after that video because there are even more people who get it! My mom had a natural 18 inch waist when she was married and her grandmother had a 13 inch one when she got married. People freak out about my great-grandmother but it was the Edwardian times so having 13" at one part of the torso works with the silhouette. I had to wear a back brace for scoliosis (very similar to Bernadette Banner's story) and I was already tiny, but the compression kept making me tinier and they kept having to cut the brace down because the back opening kept closing. Towards the end they were thinking they were going to have to make me a whole new brace because the padding placement shifted so much with them taking it in only at the back. I never thought to measure my waist as a teenager but I would not be surprised if I had grown up like my great-grandmother that I would have had an extra small waist. Thank you again to everyone who is making me feel less alone, lol! It drives me crazy how people don't even want to understand and just blow it off. Even my dad and he saw the whole brace situation and also married my mom! My mom couldn't find her dream wedding dress and so she and my grandma made it which is why she knows her measurements. I don't know why she hasn't taken it out of storage to prove it (she gets upset, too, lol!) but maybe people will just say it shrank with age? Ignorant people are just going to be ignorant I guess :P And thank you to anyone who made it through my rant, lol!

@@daintybrighton I know the feeling. My mom has really small hips so people always freak out and she can't fit in regular clothing since her hips go inward. We are all unique and people just have to get used to it.

One thing that people forget as well regarding corsets is that when they are made for you and nor tight laced they are quite comfortable and supportive

Exactly! They had to be comfortable because you'd be wearing them all day, every day. If they weren't comfortable, then you were doing something wrong or it wasn't fitted to you.

Yes! Heck, even those who do tightlace have told me that you should never be in pain or significantly encumbered while tightlacing- they train to get up to smaller and smaller sizes, but a good waist trainer never goes past what their body can handle at that time.

I'm only speaking from childhood ballet classes here, but the V cut into the back of the corset for James' dance double is probably for freedom of movement. "Ballet"-cut necklines are a wide scoop neck with a lower back, which is how leotards are cut, so your arms & shoulders are unencumbered.

I saw the dress in an exhibition in London when the film was premiering in 2015, along with many of the other iconic outfits that Sandy Powell designed for the film and they were even more beautiful in real life. They displayed the iconic blue dress on a spinning floor section so you could see it moving, and oh my gosh, the crystals glinting in the light made it feel truly magical. I can't believe someone could make something like that in real life!

I'm fourteen years older than you, but I doubt I will EVER acheive even half your sewing/design talent. I can't believe you have made FIVE of those, that's immensely impressive. And THANK YOU for the corset explanation!! SO many people are adamant that corsets were torture devices that killed women on the daily, rather than actual underwear that was accented by padding/bustles/etc. I am so tired of people that know nothing of history of corsets insisting they are evil, but you addressed that so much nicer than I would have😂 I would have gotten snarky lol

I have a couple of dresses made for Lily James in the costume hire store where I work. She was in a production of Othello at the Crucible theatre in Sheffield before she became well known (You can find pictures of her wearing them if you google her name and Othello.) One is white and the other is a two piece dress in light blue (it looks grey on the pics) with white gauze sleeves. I was one of the first people to meet her there as I was working in the stage door at the time when she came in for her final audition.

As a kid i had a Ladybird book of Cinderella, where she had 3 ballgowns starting with bronze then silver and finally gold, the time period for the fashions i'd hazzard s guess about 18th century, it would be nice to see them reimagined.

Am I the only one who thinks her waist wasn't that small? Its realistic for her size, and if you have Lily James body type, you should be able to wear a proper corset for her size no problem

I agree and disagree. She’s naturally very small waisted, I believe in press for the movie they said she has a 22 inch waist and with the corset they brought it down to 17 inches, which is very small

@@DD-gl3gx 17 inches is really small, but a 5 inch reduction isn’t that hard to achieve in a properly fitting corset. It’s not even all that uncomfortable. I easily go from a 29.5 down to a 23.5, six inches, and it only took me less than 7 hours of wear total to be able to get to that. It’s mainly that your oblique muscles need the chance to stretch as the corset lengthens them.

I would understand if you need to keep your sanity, but the layers will be lighter with flounces than with frills. It shows that they where trying to take as much weight off as possible in every part of the shirt while keeping as much volume as possible !

I loved this video, personally I can never get enough of behind the scenes costume information. I absolutely take my hat off to you for all the research you've done 👏 Speaking from experience, flounces are hell to make but they are (almost 😅) worth it for how pretty they are. Last year I made a version of the red 'girl on fire' dress from the first Hunger Games movie from a Simplicity pattern that had almost 40 chiffon flounces, which is nothing compared to the mountain for Ella's dress, and as time consuming they were to make I adore the final look! Fingers crossed for your sanity on whatever you choose to do, I'm so excited to see the making of this dress! 🤩

I had the privilege of seen this blue gown in real life. It was GORGEOUS. The thing that impressed me most was the HUGE shoulder part, even more than the skirt. That piece of fabric was masive. The waist, on the other hand, was pretty normal, not different from the step sisters or the step mother dresses (they were there too). Lily Collins is very smal, so the contrast between the huge skirt and top and the waist was even more evident, compared with a taller person.

It is probably silk tulle which is the lightest fabric but you do need a LOT of it ! I did a wedding dress with 6 full circles of silk tulle and I could easily have added another 10 no problem ! but it moves so well. Cost a lot too.

I always assumed that the frills on the petticoat were triangles but now that I’m looking at the pictures you compiled, it looks like it might be circles with frills finishing the circumference and then folded in half. Then it looks like it was tacked to fall from the center point down with a little extra stitching to guide the fall. (I’m talking about the petticoat at 21:01) that method would account for the flounces laying flat up towards the waist but being full at the hem. It would also explain the ripples that are happening at the hem in that picture. Can’t wait to see your process with this rendition!

The closest I've seen to that is Angela Paxton, I think, using horseshair in a skirt. Can't wait for part two! Take care of yourself, and get plenty of rest. i love this dress so much and its so good to hear about the details that go into it! btw re: flounces - i know you looked at the dress and said that the floofy bits on the bottom of the hem look like flounces, but in terms of the costume designer /saying/ that it was a flounce - if she is English (rather than American), its possible that she just meant a ruffle! i know some older sewists in the UK will say flounce, and mean the american 'frill' (i.e. the straight gathered piece of fabric).

Because people are jealous. I often see it in certain costuming groups, the older and larger women prefer to think that people of that size don’t exist in reality because it makes them feel better about themselves.

I think people had issue because Lily James said in an interview that she couldn't eat solid food when wearing it because it was very tight. That said, that is not the fault of corsets, corsets can be worn without being too tight and weren't the torture devises many people seem to think that they were

But you're missing a point here. If it were a movie marketed towards adults, no one would be bothered, but why does a character from a *kids* movie need a small waist? I highly doubt any of them would find the dress any less magical if it had a normal waist. Kids are also very impressionable so this is quite dangerous if you ask me.

@@alisav8394 she’s a normal weight I don’t see the problem with her waist, yes representation in body types is important, but wouldn’t that include her? Fat women, average women, thin women, underweight women, they should all have representation. Representing these people isn’t condoning their body or lifestyle, nor is it explicitly glorifying it. What people take from her size is not the fault of the movie, it’s the fault of others for drawing attention to her figure or weight, because look at the dress!

I think another aspect I haven't seen discussed about the tiny waist illusion is how the big hair serves to both balance out the silhouette, and (along with the poofy bertha) create the impression of more cartoon-like proportions. You're visually comparing the sides of her *hair* silhouette against her waist for the proportions, not necessarily the edges of her face/where her ACTUAL head would be. I think it's quite effective and probably explains historical hairstyles in context (e.g. think of the classic Edwardian pompadour).

I must admit, as pretty as the the ball gown is, my eyes never left the Stepmother. As far as I’m concerned, Cate Blanchett is the one wearing the best costuming in this movie. It’s just all amazing. A mix of 1860s, 1890s, and then also 1940s and 50s. Super avante garde, but grounded in different historical eras. Very structured, and just stunning! Doesn’t hurt that Cate is as stunning as her costumes. So I think when it comes to this movie, it’s the costuming for Cate that is the huge standout, not the blue ball gown. Sure, that one dress is impressive, but not as impressive as the entire wardrobe of the Stepmother. And I’m also still a bit salty about Lily James pulling the usual Hollywood actress “but the corset almost killed me!” shtick. Did it really, Lily? Or were you just not used to it? Also, she complained that the corset gave her gas in one sentence, and then in the next, said she drank nothing but Diet Coke. I somehow don’t think it was the corset at fault for her discomfort. Not quite as bad as Emma Watson’s refusal to wear a corset at all (nevermind that corsets wouldn’t have existed at the time Beauty and the Beast took place, she would have been wearing stays, and it’s probable that her refusal was one of the reasons why they yellow dress was so boring and awful- though to be fair, I generally don’t like Jaqueline Durand as a costumer). And also not as annoying as Emma Stone’s “uh, my organs shifted”. Honey, your organs shift every time you breathe! Get over it! I may have a thing about this. At least watching Karolina Zebrowska lets me know I’m far from alone.

This is the greatest rebuttal to 'a corset cut me in half' that I have ever read-it's incredible how much misinformation on corsets there are in general-I'm a costuming student and I get into arguments with other students who swear that corsets deform the body (when there's literally no proof of that but I digress), but I agree-Cate Blanchett's costumes were stunning.

I love Karolina’s where she just makes fun of actresses pretending that they almost died “for their craft!”

Thank you, thank you, thank you for being accurate with your depiction of corsets! It's ALL about that optical illusion. Also, they not only had big skirts and tops to make their waists seem smaller, but a lot of women padded their hips, bum and chests to make it even more exaggerated. Tight lacing, like a lot of people suggest was done here, was just not a thing, it was only on extreme fringes of fashion circles.

I agree with you about historical corsets, they were worn for comfort and support and tight lacing was uncommon and frowned upon. A properly fitting corset also moulded to the body in time and were not torture devices like they are depicted in Hollywood movies! That said...Lily James herself did say in interviews that she 'was laced within an inch of my life' and that she couldn't eat solid food while wearing the dress, so I think in this particular case I think it is a combination of optical illusion, Lily James having a naturally very tiny waist anyway, and the corset pulling an extra few inches in (her waist was 22 inches in the corset and dress)

@@phoenixkh93 That's all possible. However, it's important to keep in mind that nowadays woman, and people in general, don't wear tight fitting, structured clothing like they used to. It's safe to assume that Lily James is just not used to it, and that can be a major contributing factor to any discomfort. Granted, these are assumptions. You make valid points.

I am so going to recreate this! I will however change a few things for starters I really don’t understand why there’s butterflies on the Bertha I just don’t get it, instead I’m going to put slightly larger crystals maybe some glitter idk yet. And for the bodice I understand why you need to wear a corset and then the bodice but I feel like combining the two together in my head it makes more sense that way. I think that’s all I’m going to change for now

Hey Bella, the hem on the frills maybe rolled hem with the fishing line with an overlooker and special foot attachment to feed the fishing line as you sew. Also the frill on the under garment / pant hem looks to me as though it's cut on the bias to prevent fraying to the raw edge.💜💜🤔😊

Yes, exactly! This is how I hemmed the frills for many of the petticoats...but the issue comes when/if I choose flounces. Rolled hems don't do well with curved hems...

They made 8 different versions and there's two different types of cages if you look at the one the lady's are all sitting around on the floor from the newspaper article and the one on i'ts own with a single see through petticoat on, the rings are arranged differently. :) the woman in blue shirt on the floor in newspaper article looks exactly like my mum! We made this dress and you can see our whole tutorial on my channel and website. This dres was not light as a feather when we finished it! :)

That could be true with the crinoline....I thought the same thing. But after making a replica of the crinoline, it actually does look like the same placement of the hoops, but a different view. The spot you see when they're all working around almost looks like the back of the crinoline. The back of the cage would look very similar to this. But at the same time, there definitely could be serval crinolines! That's awesome!

So the godets at the waistline are there to reduce bulk so that she does not appear bigger in that area. Also the sewing term for a "frill" is a ruffle. The flounces are used instead of a ruffle to again reduce bulk. I also see no white in the underlayers except in areas that don't show as the fabric is probably a cheaper fabric.

My issue has always been less about the corset and more about the size her waist appears to be and how that will affect young impressionable self conscious girls. It’s not Lily’s fault because it’s just her body but disney and the designers should have kept it in mind. They made a film marketed towards young girls who won’t be sat there in the cinema thinking “what a cool optical illusion!”-they’ll be thinking “oh she’s so pretty, I wish I looked like that. But how can I look like that? I’m not that thin, I guess I’ll have to lose weight.” Add onto that the likely photoshopping which made her look even smaller on the posters and you’ve got an unhealthy mix. Corsets are just supportive wear so I have no issue with that but the shape it creates and the direction of the panelling isn’t helping the issue as it only draws even more attention to the fact that it looks like Cinderella might be missing some of her ribs. It’s a pretty dress but I stand by the fact that Disney should have been more careful on the extreme image they were marketing to little girls.

The best way to do a curved or circular hem is to first do a straight stitch along the edge, preferably on paper to help keep it's shape, then after taking the paper off you fold the hem over with the straight stitching on the edge and then zig zag over the stitched fold and cut away the excess carefully.

the blue-and-white gored skirt you show just before 12:17 looks like a professional ballroom dance skirt--the kind they thread fishing line into the rolled hem...the fishing line gives lightweight fullness to the hem and makes the ostrich feather-trimmed skirts of such dresses flare and fly when twirled. i wonder whether they were using it as a petticoat...?

OK I never actually realized the difference between frills and flounces. But I don't quite understand why the amount of work is so different... Is it just from the cutting of the rounded shapes instead of straight pieces of fabric? Because I would have thought that, on the contrary, as there is less gathering involved in flounces, it would be quicker to make, even if it is more fabric consuming... By the way, your work is amazing, I can't wait to see the following episodes :)

Hemming a curved edge is a pain in the rear. I believe Bella Mae has a video explaining how to hem circle skirts that goes into more detail as to why.

Exactly what Kirsten said! Hemming curves is a PAIN! And the gathering more or less doesn't really save and add extra time...especially when using a gathering foot. Plus cutting out straight pieces of fabric is much easier that curved pieces because you can't use a rotary cutter!

I did classical dance for a long time, and the ''V'' placements were used to force the fabric to look puffy and more voluminous. I don't know what it is used for here, but I can ensure you it also helps distributing the weight of the fabric evenly in the choreography. It was more ''ergonomic'', if I have the right therm. Wtr, if this was used ther for the same reasons as the ''V'' placements of some dresses I've worn on stage, it can explain that we were trying to achieve an easy way to distribute the weight of the dress while according the fabric to be more easy to deal with in the walking/running/dancing situation, because any other ways of placing the fabric would feel heavier and painful to wear in a longtime, especially in dancing and running situations. If you really want to do the dress, I just really hope you will see my comment on time and be aware of the fabric placements, making mouvements in the dress easier and make it feel a little bit more balanced.

I am so excited to watch you recreate this dress. What always fascinated me about the dress was how the skirt rippled like water when she ran in it. It seems counterintuitive for something so massive to flow like that. Do you think this is the result of the yumissima fabric? Just as a thought, I think there is fabric between the bottom two hoops of the crinoline. In the picture you showed, this section looks slightly more opaque, so I am guessing it is the same transparent fabric they used for the first petticoat layer. As for flounces vs frills, I value your sanity, but I also started chanting "Do it!" like a drunk frat boy the moment you mentioned you were considering flounces.

Happy to have you along! I know...it makes me fall in love with it over and over and over again! I do think the floating look of the skirt is definitely due to the yumissima! And then the design of the petticoat contributes a whole lot to how they move! Ya, I actually noticed that about the crinoline...forgot to mention it. I think it might "fill" in those gaps of the hoops so that the frills don't get stuck in the gaps (it happened on one of my replicas.) Haha, a lot of people are saying that...so I probably will! 😅

So excited for another series! And this seems like a real passion project for you so I’m sure it’s gonna be real exciting!! However when you were talking about the construction of the crinoline you said that it looked like it was only supported by the vertical ribbons, but I can clearly see diagonal supports all along the middle. If you already know about those and have deemed them to be something else then just ignore me 😅 but I just wanted to make sure before you moved on to the actual construction process. Good luck!
