To be fair, the disney-fairytales arent the original ones, they are a softer version of the already softer grimm-versions. The originals are much more brutal and often without a happy end.
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 3 года назад
I heard some of the originals in elementary school. And then wanted to be traumatized more as an adult so I bought a collection of original fairy tales. Most of them end in brutal murder, sometimes unexpected and an obvious overreaction to what happened before in the story. One of the fairy tales (forget what it was called) takes place in the city I currently live in. Two people fall in love and want to get married, she's a commoner and he's rich, his mother opposes the marriage and the couple decides to deal with it by tying a rock to her feet and throwing her in the river drowning her. Some stories also don't make much sense in our current year because we lack the cultural context the stories were written in. You don't know what's going on and then suddenly... orrible murdurr again.

@@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 at least you can see the morals in the originals, like you would notice mother of a rich heir woudn't be happy to welcome some social-climber girl with no education and nothing to her name to the family, it's at least teaches some real life morals. Instead of stupid ideas Disney feeding to young girls, of how physical beauty is the most important thing in woman's life, and just on the back of you being pretty you should get some crazy rich and loving prince charming, who will solve all your problems.

Hey there's a term for when the N migrates in a phrase. I don't remember the term, but napkins used to be apkins, aprons used to be naprons. The change happened because "an apkin" drifted over to "a napkin," and "a napron" drifted to "an apron." Okay just looked it up, it's called misdivision, metanalysis, or rebracketing.

I never really thought about how absolutely screwed up Cinderella really is. The Fairy Godmother had some pretty far reaching powers, yet she basically got her dolled up to go hook a prince at a party. Somehow this is supposed to be an epic love story for girls, where guys are expected to be this Prince Charming, come in and lift her out of this oppressive situation, and she can just be pampered happily ever after. I'm with Shrek on the response to this imagery.

Interesting thing to talk about, there's some videos where they talk about how Cinderella wasn't actually THAT revolutionary of a story The prince doesn't marry a peasant, he marries a "poor rich girl". He still married within the noble class, so no actual social rules were broken.
@veronicaelders4823
@veronicaelders4823 3 года назад
An important part of Cinderella that everyone seems to forget is that Cinderella's appearance was changed with the fairy godmother's magic so that her step-mother and step-sisters wouldn't recognize her.
@Namron9797
@Namron9797 3 года назад
But then why can't the magic just make THEM not recognize her? And if you spout some lousy nonsense like, well love blah blah blah. He searched AN ENTIRE KINGDOM for her and he needs a stupid shoe to prove his love??
@Talynen
@Talynen 2 года назад
Isn't that a really stupid plot device then? Oh I fell in love with a girl at first sight and then when I found someone who the shoe she dropped fit the girl looked totally different! I mean how likely is a prince to meet someone at a dinner party and learn enough about them to go off much more than physical attraction? Not like he knew her life story or got a great front row seat of how kind she was to the animals.
@veronicaelders4823
@veronicaelders4823 2 года назад
@@Namron9797 That's,,,, that's literally what happened. The magic only changed her appearance for Stepmom and Stepsisters. And Prince Charming didn't search the entire kingdom. He didn't even know that a search was being performed. The King decided that. He just wanted his son married, and he didn't care if the shoe belonged to the right girl or not. Prince Charming wasn't even in the room for that discussion.

well .. technically, Cinderalla is not about love , the ragged girl and the price ... Cinderalla was NOT a commoner, she was in fact a lady who was uzurped by the evil step mother ....so the story is more about a diamant shinning even if it's covered in mud. But somehow everyone misses this ...
@diosdehuecomundo
@diosdehuecomundo 3 года назад
It's also about a girl who knows how to work and - if you've seen 3 Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel (which is a fantastic film) - who's smart enough for riddles and fit enough to go hunting instead of just looking pretty and singing to birds on a balcony. I mean I get the "diamond covered in mud" analogy but I'm honestly sick and tired of princess stories implying that the only thing that makes someone notice you is being pretty. Btw the prince in the movie I mentioned as well learned the lesson that there's more to a girl - or any person really - than the way she dresses and acts at a social occasion. I wholeheartedly recommend watching that film. I've been watching it with my family every year on christmas and I don't think I'll ever quit that tradition. Not trying to bash your views on Cinderella but the frase "somehow everyone misses this" made me want to show you that it's not a matter of understanding the plot but rather a matter of perspective regarding the story.
@speedy7040
@speedy7040 3 года назад
@@diosdehuecomundo I like the modern spin off as much as everybody else, but the original story is nothing like you've describe. The story is middle age , and reflects the middle age mentality . Is not smartness, witt , or hard work that saves Cinderrela, it's MAGIC ,made by family - her godmother who "happens " to be a fayrie. And it was also the lack of a good family that condemned her in the first place- her father disregarding her - the worse thing that could happen to someone in those times. The only atribute that is praised in Cinderrela , beside her decorative looks , is her obedience and resignation to her fate, the "slave mentality" who was so apreciated by christians...especially in a women ... There is a reason why there is NO story about a prince marrying a low birth woman.. and when it DID happen , rumours about wichery and evil started around her ...This is what they belived then - you are your father's son or daughter , and your place in society was decided at birth.

@@speedy7040 Neither the most famous version of the Grimm brothers (1812), nor the older french Version (1679) which is closer to the Disney one were written or published in the middle ages. There's no fairy in the Grimm's Version and her good nature, diligence and relationship to her dead mother are what help her with her fate. The fairytale can be interpreted in a lot of ways and from different viewpoints and it's luckily alot more interesting than just that bleak stereotypical perception we sometimes have about the past. Oh, and Cinderella isn't a "low birth" woman in any of the popular versions, she's abused in a rich home.

just to be pedantic ;) words that take "an" did originally begin with the N but it got moved to join the A around the time of Chaucer when more people became literate and couldn't correspond the written word with how they spoke which, when added to The Great Vowel Shift led to a period of substantial change in the language.
@alestane2
@alestane2 2 года назад
Not true for onion, at the very least. The word comes from Latin unio via Old French oignon and was unyun in Middle English. None of these words begins with "n". The article "a" actually comes from "an", not the other way around, which makes your explanation a bit suspect, at least as a generality.

I don’t have a problem with vegetables. Tax and paying for electric gas and petrol will kill me getting to the point of topping myself not long now. Funny but it’s the only thing I can control

Probably somebody who was in too much of a hurry to notice the flaw in the argument "It's #standup #comedy about cooking and #kids."

Thank you for describing the cinderella story perfectly!!! This video is going in my "Relationships Comedy" playlist. I love it when funny guys have feminist messages. With all the mysogyny, it doesn't count as much or at all coming from a chick. Love ya John! 😁💕

Cinderella wasn't born poor, she was a lady whose step mother took all the family's money and turned her poor. She was still well bred. Plus it was a masquerade ball I believe, so he couldn't see her whole face.
