Hopefully this means that several of their films will be shown around the country, too. Powell and Pressburger are probably at the heart of British cinema and it’s greatest exponents. I often prefer their more minor films because of how they capture life in an unusual but authentic way. I’ve been hoping for some years that there’d be a huge box set release of their films, but because they are owned by different companies it’ll take a massive effort from someone to achieve that, so I’m sadly resigned to never seeing it happen.

I must have seen film of `The Tales of Hoffman ` when it was first released, because the 3 disc long playing record set , bought at that time, is still in my collection . At first it was played on the green Dansette record player that I had as a teenager ,then through the years almost continuously on whatever player I had at the time .Finally came the first DVD ,so I could enjoy at last what I had only imagined as I listened to the recorded soundtrack and now ,thanks to Martin Scorsese the updated and complete DVD.

Mine too, ever since I first saw it tv way back in 1975. Have introduced it a few times at my local art house.

How wonderful. I have loved Powell and Pressburger’s work for filty years, and where I am not especially interested in the artists these film-making giants have influenced, knowing their work can be seen in state-of-the-art digital restoration is encouraging.
