The guy that made this video is the definition of the dude who gets mad at everything for no reason lol. I don’t even watch cinemasins anymore, but I think they’re obviously not a “serious” channel. while i didn’t experience those exact scenarios, i relate heavily ! my dad is the kind of dude who watches any film under the sun because he hasn’t seen it yet, or because ‘you never know’. he’s seen so many objectively bad movies and cartoons but his analysis is always the same of ‘it was alright’ because in his mind the entertainment is more valuable than the quality of the film and oftentimes his standards don’t exclude most of your standard well-criticized film mishaps. he is the extreme opposite end of the spectrum to cinema sins, and a younger me, who delighted in finding things i could nitpick because i was painfully trying to exert some intelligence. the truth is you enjoy things marginally more when you just shut off your nasty brain and take in the possible on-screen chaos in stride. (maybe not the case for *really* good films you really want to dig into.) i rewatch the same films and shows dozens of times so maybe i was just more opposed to opening up my preferences not a cinemasins fan, fortunately. just wanted to add my experience.

That's the whole point of cinemasins. They say as much in their first "everything wrong with cinemasins" video. They arn't movie critics, their just jerks with time on their hands nitpicking movies. If you want real movie reviews they arn't the channel to watch for that. If you want maybe a few laughs at best and to hear a guy drone on about nitpicks in a movie than ya they are the channel to watch. The guy has valid criticisms of CS but even he knows that CS understands that, they keep on doing what they do becuase of audience engagement and money. Which I mean I can't blame em, they have an audience and they make money giving that audience what they want, and that audience doesn't want real movie reviews when they watch CS they want nitpicks.

I like to notice all the nitpicky things. I like being able to watch a TV show or movie and identify "these two things were shot on different days" or "there's the boom mic" etc. I like being able to identify plot holes, or predict where something is going based wholly on trope knowledge. There's a sort of nerdy glee to it. These things aren't reasons not to watch a movie or think a movie is bad, though. If you're not also thinking about the message the movie is trying to get across, how well it uses its themes, is the cinematography helping or hindering, you're missing the point of criticism entirely. And if you can't watch a dumb movie and enjoy it on its own terms, you shouldn't be trying to critique it in the first place. Sometimes, a movie only needs to be fun, and that's okay! I think this quote from Ratatouille sums it up perfectly: "In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so."

Then I didn't watch them for a few years and recently decided to watch a video from them because I've started to love film reviews and analysis. I watched a video from them on a film I neither liked nor disliked (forgot the film though) and was disappointed to see them making jokes more focused on laughing at the plot choices of the film (some of which did make perfect sense in context). Hey! Nice to meet ya! Ok, skipping the weak intro...I take some of what they say seriously, just like you guys do when critiquing them. Most of their sins are jokes, and that is quite obvious to anyone who isn't either dick riding them, or trying to critique them. Anyways, some of what they say can be applied to other movies, to which I do pay attention to. For starters, cliches are used in media, which do pull me out of movies at times. Not every cliche is good, but not all are bad. As for story elements, like in Avatar the Way of Water, they point out characters and how they act, which do not make sense. Sully wants peace, but only after betraying his race, killing a high ranking officer, and failing his one job they gave him, only for him to go full Navi, lead a tribe, and not listen to others? CinemaSins isn't untouchable and can be critiqued, absolutely, but what they do is comedy for people who watch them, while also providing some ways for watchers to use their heads. We are not obligated to agree to their "sins" either, so if they make a dumb call, we can disagree with it for our own reasons.

I absolutely agree with your point at 24:30, when I watched CinemaSins I'd start "noticing" things in movies, things that "didn't make sense". Me and a friend would even sit and watch movies CS hadn't done videos on yet and we'd laugh at how bad some things were even if it really wasn't bad. My Mom actually told me to shut the fuck up while watching movies because I'd keep ruining everything, but I just didn't understand back then. I understand that I should've seen what I was doing, but I completely aped CS while watching movies, there's a fat 4 year hole somewhere around 2015 where I just didn't enjoy a single movie, because I'd have that fucking Dinging sound in the back of my mind when my subconscious thought there was something that didn't make sense, I'd roll my eyes, point to the screen and say: "That doesn't make sense." I wouldn't say shit if it was just a channel about shit-talking movie mistakes, but it literally just pointed out random things and said... well, nothing. At that point you're basically just fostering a mentality that movies aren't good, "No movie is without a sin" is sadly more like a "No movie is actually good" at the end of things.

I know it's not RU-vid but sometimes there would be shows that point out these things in films, but they keep it like 4 or 5 things per film and move onto the next. Just for fun like seeing a car in the background of a film set in ancient Egypt or something. Never really go into the all the story stuff, mostly visual. If CinemaSins kept it to that, maybe a video covering one film would be really short. So do it like TV. Half an hour to an hour of a load of films just pointing out mistakes. Instead of just being a series of jokes...yeah you can put jokes in to laugh at the mistake....but framing everything as a joke and a mistake...eh. You could just make a different series for that. It seems he wants to be different from review channels, but that's what he comes off as, a review channel disguised as pointing out mistakes and continuity errors, things that weren't meant to make it in the film.
@SomniRespiratoryFlux

I think this video points out my main issue with CS-style "criticism" pretty well, but to add my two cents... Cinema Sins has contributed to, if not ouright created, this culture of perfectionism with regards to media. If you like something, it mist be defended from any and all criticism. If you dislike it, it can't have any redeeming qualities and must be relentlessly trashed (and anybody who likes it regardless must be wrong, possibly not just factually but morally). But they specifically make a point of criticizing _all_ movies, and their tagline is that "no movie is without sin", right? The second part of that culture, sure, but how does CS contribute to an inability to criticize things you enjoy? That's where the inconsistency and "it's just a joke" aspects come in. If you like a movie, they're just nitpicking or making jokes, and the video doesn't really mean anything. It's a joke, not criticism. But if you dislike a movie, their jokes and nitpicks become meaningful, and expose the problems with the movie, regardless of whether the quality of the criticism is any different. I know it's kind of frowned on to bring up politics, especially non-centrist views, out of nowhere, but there's a channel I enjoy called Innuendo Studios that makes a good amount of leftist political commentary. And in the video "The Card Says 'Moops'", he describes a particular sort of internet user that, while not exclusive to the alt-right, thrives there: "Schroedinger's Douchebag", a person whose words are so thoroughly irony-poisoned that not even they (or rather, usually he) can tell when a take is sincere and when it's just an irreverent joke. I bring this up, not for any political reason, but to posit that Cinema Sins and their fans are Schroedinger's Douchebag as media critics. There's no sincerity - if someone says a movie is bad, here's why it's bad, but if they say it's good, it's "come on, can't you take a joke" or worse, the implication that you're just upset because you can't bear to see something you like criticized. But it's not that I think anything is perfect, and honestly, framing the "think critically about everything" in such a zero-context, near-purely negative Gish Gallop full of terrible arguments that misunderstand media criticism on a fundamental level, with no "here's how it could be improved on", just an endless parade of bullet points... It makes it harder to genuinely criticize things, whether you end up deciding that the thing is good or bad overall. Or whether or not a bad thing is still enjoyable in some way despite the issues. I've seen people be like "I know Cinema Sins is trash, but their videos on genuinely bad movies are still funny", and... I get it, but I still hesitate to even give them that much credit, because even on "bad" movies their videos still often have really bad arguments for those movies being bad or unenjoyable. In the end, in order for a criticism to really feel sincere, you have to engage with what you're criticizing on a level playing field, taking the good and the bad, addressing it all within its own context, and suggesting ways it could have been improved if there are major problems. Criticism is not just about sorting media or fans thereof into boxes of "good" or "bad", and while it's good to be reminded that even the best media has flaws, Cinema Sins is abjectly terrible at doing this for the right reasons or in the right ways. The end result is a product that makes people worse at media criticism, while stroking their egos to make them think it's making them better at it. If Jeremy really wants to make Hollywood movies better he'd offer suggestions of what could be genuinely improved. But either he has no suggestions, or finds his position of "making bank off of smug superiority" too lucrative to actually want movies to be better. And that ignores that not only have there always been bad movies, there are still good ones and bad-but-enjoyable ones. Cynicism and irony-poisoning in media criticism genuinely help nobody.

I never watched CinemaSins, and I'm glad I never did. They just seem intent running an old joke to the fucking outer reaches of the unknown universe when it stopped being funny last millennium ago.

Anecdotal, but everyone in my family growing up was dumb as fuck, abusive, self absorbed and utterly miserable people to be around. The myth is tied to alcohol making people "happy", as if mental health experts say you should get buzzed whenever you're sad. It's just a depressant, it doesn't make you happy, it's artificial dopamine that makes other activities less pleasurable compared to drinking, the happy alcoholic stereotype is long dead.

Something I'd like to add is that "not caring" and "being ignorant" are 2 entirely different things that are often mistaken for one another. What I mean by this is... you can watch a movie, with lots of flaws and room for criticism. You can be _fully aware_ of the criticisms and flaws you could point out... or you could just choose to ignore them and enjoy the movie. It's all just a matter of what you focus on. And it's much more fulfilling to just enjoy a movie. There will _always_ be cynical people, and people who's literal *job* it is to pluck and peel apart movies second-by-second... so there's no need for you to sacrifice your own enjoyment of media to do that. It doesn't make you ignorant, because you're still aware of the flaws, you just realize that it'll do nothing but make yourself miserable to cling to them. If anything, it makes you wiser than the people who always nit-pick everything.

If I’m being honest, they’d be a whole lot funnier if they just stuck with the “snob satire” approach without throwing any actual criticism in there as well. Having both in the same format makes it _really_ hard to tell the two apart. CinemaWins also does this, but his phrasing and delivery makes it clear which is just half-hearted “positive vibes” (like “hugging” or “x is always a win”) and which is the real good stuff.

True, though even if CS stuck with the pretentious amateur film critic caricature, they'd still be terrible at it. They'd really have to ham up the snobby aspects of their own scripts by coming off as, well, pseudointellectual. One potential avenue: deliberately misusing film theory in such an outlandish way that it's clear they're putting on an act. Maybe, say, creating a video called "Sound Direction In Movies Has Lost Its Way" where they launch into a diatribe about how when Jules takes a bite of the Big Kahuna Burger in Pulp Fiction, the diegetic sound of his chewing is a failure because it doesn't accurately convey how tasty the burger is (completely missing the point of both diegetic sound and the scene's purpose). Or devoting an entire video to how Tarantino can't be called an auteur because Reservoir Dogs doesn't contain a shot of a woman's feet (gross misunderstanding of auteur theory while calling attention to a quirky aspect of Tarantino's films that even he jokes about). Instead, CS comes off as the drunk, dimwitted uncle at a family gathering who can't help but wonder aloud why Awkwafina named herself after a water bottle while you're trying to enjoy Shang-Chi. And as far as I'm concerned, that's exactly what they are.

@@lionguardant5468 That is because people do not want to engage with art at all, they want escapism and entertaiment, so they don't want their viewpoints to be challenged or even if not challenged for them to be reminded of the problems of society, they don't see media as art but as a kind of drug to forget for a time about their worries and be happy, so when they view a political message they disagree being present at all in their tools of scapism they get angry, or even if they agree when they see real problems of society they have to deal with in their escapist media they feel sad. So what people prefer is the most vanilla bullshit that tries to not challenge any political idea and do not show current social problems. It is not a good reason to hate, but it is most probably the actual reason of the hate, the public is not looking for a challenge to their ideas or a reminder of grim realities. The solution to this is actually art, if a piece of media is high art, top quality, people will forgive to be trown out of their sphere of comfort and challenged, but if the piece is uninspired or mediocre, then it is not forgiven. There had been a lot of mediocre or even downright bad works in the last years that have had challenging politics in them, and it has caused people to associate bad quality with having a political message. You can't make a cheesy cringey comedy full of political ideals and expect people to like it, and there ha been a ton of that kind of shit, and that has made it worse and now people are dismissing good works because they are political. Dumb movies can't have complex messages, fast and furious is as dumb as that ghostbusters movie, but fast and furious is just dumb action with some fuzzy message about family and in friends are family. While the ghostbusters movie was triying to push gender politics and empowerement of women, that is a good message but you can't just include that message in a dumb movie, because the message is not some fuzzy dumb cheesy message but a real message about a real problem in society, and it needs a level of quality equal to the seriousness of the message, which that ghostbusters movied did not have, it wasn't even that hard, women emporewement is not that contencious and most people agree that is good so you don't need and absolute master work to justify it, just something that is good, but the movie was not good, it was a dumb movie, so it undermined the message and people make the message the culprit of the quality because we humans are quick to find culprits even if they are not. Movies like that and other works with similar problems have made society to think "politics=bad quality" in the recent years, this has caused the standards required for something to be politic to rise and rise and rise again, i blame capitalism as the cause of this is bad people wanting to missuse important political messages as marketing tools for their dumb movies.

If CinemaSins critiqued The Tortoise and the Hare, they'd probably complain about how the story was too short, there was no character arc, and how can the tortoise communicate with the hare they're two different species, and why was the hare so stupid as to take a nap halfway through the race. And they would completely miss out the lesson of the fable, that if you have talent but are lazy, you're going to be beaten by people who work hard and never give up. The superficial elements of the story are not as important as the themes and subtext. No story is "CinemaSins-proof". Any shithead troll can point and laugh and make fun of something. But the act of creation, of adding value to the world, that is infinitely harder, and infinitely more valuable than these shitheads' "opinions". i did not expect to cry at this video. but the ending did just that. this video is very good at explaining all of cinema sins faults in bad writing, bad analyses of movies, and bad concept overall, but it is also good at letting me retain hope. sometimes videos like these that rip through people with hate-filled hearts end with a nihilistic stance on the world, because honestly, people like that make us lose hope for others. if cinemasins exists and is so widely popular even now, what hope do i have for society's critical thinking when it comes to movie analysis? but this video let me keep that hope. i love feeling things deeply and emotionally. i love watching movies that carry hard-hitting points, even if most think the movie wasn't that good. i love watching beautiful metaphors manifest into the climax of the film, it's nice. thank you for this video.

The problem with the “find this about a movie to laugh, poke fun, or mock” genre is it starts off fun but eventually viewers want you to make fun of just about everything. @middle aged man in extreme debt First of all I was thinking the exact same thing. I love pitch meeting. I think here are few major differences. 1) Ryan makes a lot of fun outside the movie thus not depending entirely on the poking fun part for entertainment. It is often subtle but u can observe it and enjoy on rewatches or if u pay attention. 2) He usually poiints out plot holes and major plot contrivances rather than just nit picking the entire movie. 3) He usually does not undermine the great art either by not making a video on such movies or by acknowledging how good they are in the video itself. For ex try movies like matrix or john wick To better understand the differences i suggest watch both videos of the same movie from ryan and cs and honest trailers.

@@robertyounger5849 It's not dramatic if it convinces movie fans to change their approach to analyzing movies which forces movie studios to make jokes that poke fun at tropes within movies. One of the big problems about cinemasins is that they do multiple different things: Some of their sins are genuine criticisms. Some of their sins are jokes. Some of their sins are just wrong. Jeremy has gone on record saying that they sometimes get things wrong on purpose because he "thinks it's funny." They have crafted a template where they can never get anything wrong ever. They never tell your whether the sin is meant to be genuine or a joke, and it means that if they actually get it wrong because they're fucking idiots, they can defend themselves by saying "no, we actually MEANT to get that wrong!" That's why you have so many diehard cinemasins fans who defend them by saying "You just don't understand cinemasins!" Because you CAN'T understand what they mean at any given time. It is hardcoded into their template.

The "intentionally ignorant" sin thing drives me up a wall. Basically for the same reasons described in this video's precursor: you can't just lump in something "intentionally ignorant" with a bunch of not-intentionally-ignorant things and expect people to get "the joke." And if you're not going to own-up to things you _did_ get wrong (like with editing notes, or something) then there's no discernible difference between "legit wrong" and "purposefully wrong." It's _such_ a cop-out to say "half the things we get wrong, we get wrong on purpose." Doesn't matter how intentional it was -- if there's no conveyance to the audience either explicitly or implicitly (e.g. in tone or surrounding context), then it just ends up being ignorant. At that point, _claiming_ "we meant to do that" doesn't really change that it comes across as stupid. It's an incredibly juvenile response to criticism. Also, "at least 50% of the time" is an awful ratio, lol.

They like to claim that their videos are all “sarcasm” and they definitely are. But it isn’t a fun kind of sarcasm. It feels withering and petulant. It’s edgy eighth graders thinking they’re the coolest because nothing matters to them. With so many people treating their videos as gospel, I think it spreads this idea that genuinely loving(or even just enjoying) a work, flaws and all, is stupid and should immediately discredit you. I don’t want to just say “How the heck did X do Y in Scene Z?!” I want to have an honest, earnest discussion about films, games, books, etc. I want to listen to discussions of what it made people feel and how it made them feel that. That’s what I think we should be doing and promoting. Sorry for being so long and rambly.
