We're giving away the "$1.000 studio" - Comment below if you want to participate!
“Complete Composing Studio Under $1.000” - The goal is to build a studio that has everything that I need to compose cinematic music, including libraries.
The studio is already built and I’m actually using it for a documentary project that I'm working on at the moment. It's 40 minutes of music so it's going to give me a chance to really test it, optimize it and see where I struggle with limitations.
Here’s the list of Hardware, Plugins, and Libraries (description below) and its price and links:
Computer: $529.99
MIDI Keyboard: $42.90
Monitor: $93.99
Headphones: $49
Audio Interface: $53
Sequencer: Cubase LE comes free with the MIDI Keyboard
Sonarworks Reference 4: $99 - storeus.sonarw...
Nucleus Lite: $99 - www.audioimper...
Total: $966.88
$1.000 is a tight budget for a complete studio including libraries. We had to do some compromises.
The Computer is a PC Acer Aspire i5-10400 6-Core, 12GB RAM, 512GB SSD (Windows 10, Keyboard, and Mouse Included).
I could’ve maybe gone for the cheapest version of the new Mac Mini M1… but I wanted to be able to upgrade in the future so I went for the Acer. It’s not a full-size motherboard, so I’ll be limited to 32GB RAM if I want to upgrade later...
On the other hand, it has plenty of SATA ports, so can add SSDs and I won’t need as much RAM
Or I could even install a Sonnet M.2 4x4 NVMe (which reads at 6GB/s... thought card plus drives setup is more expensive than the computer itself! LOL) and you can actually purge your samples and free your RAM completely and use your Sonnet to host all your samples. That’s as long as you’re using Kontakt! If you’re using the new Spitfire or Orchestral tools samplers you can’t control how much if each instrument gets loaded on RAM… so you’ll still need some decent RAM amount if you use these libraries in the future.
I’m finishing this project and I'll be posting a video on RU-vid with my thoughts. But right away I’ll say that if I had a bigger budget or if I was to upgrade, the first thing that I’d do is adding a MIDI Controller. I miss having those MIDI faders very much! The keyboard mood wheel gets the job done but it feels limited (workflow speed and realism).
The keyboard is nice and also gets the job done… the keys are not full size though and I’m not used to that but not deal breaker. I was looking at built-in faders or knobs and I was considering the AKAI MPK Mini MK3 on the low end or the Nektar Impact LX49+ on the “high end” (based on my budget)... but I couldn’t fit them in my budget.
The Audio Interface (Behringer U-Control UCA222) is decent for the price. The latency is not that bad as long as you keep it to the lowest setting. The computer is very much capable to keep up with the lowest setting because the library that we’re using is light and efficient.
Nucleus Lite is a great library for the price and there’s a lot that you can do with it. But there are lots or reviews online so I won’t go deep.
Reference 4 is a game-changer. Especially when you can’t afford really high-end speakers or headphones. I actually bought my headphones based on their supported list of headphones. I found out what headphones they supported and then I looked at how much I had left in my budget I got myself a pair of AKG K72.
Now, these are not excellent headphones. In fact, I wouldn’t mix with these in a million years! LOL
But with the Reference’s correction curve (even though there are still limitations) they feel much closer to the real thing and I actually feel confident that I can do a decent mix...
Anyway, there’s much more to talk about here.

Marc, when I saw you unboxing the PC, I thought it's going to produce something below average. When I heard the music, my jaw dropped, and for a moment I forget to breathe. That minimal setup creates impactful music. Count me in! I would love to hug... the PC!

I used to record very primitively on a and old VAIO and then migrated to some laptops, but mostly rock/acoustic stuff and some music for short film school projects. All of my music gear (all of my stuff, really), however, wast snatched from me early last year. It would be great get on the frontline again. Thank you, it's very generous, and good luck to all. I'm in the wrong country to win this but I wanted to say how encouraging this video has been. Even with inexpensive equipment, it is possible to make great music. I love this and I want to bring that idea to my kids to encourage them as well. There was a time in my country when our dollar was at par with the U.S. but, not so anymore. It will cost me probably more like $1500 to put this together but I will slowly put that money aside and build a system that we can put to use. Thanks very much for including a list of what you bought. This has all been very uplifting.

I like your videos Marc because it's clear you do not forget where you came from. Limited budget does mean limited creativity, but may mean limited ability to fully express everything you want to! This I know well, so I appreciate that you do not talk down to those of us at different levels of experience and equipment, but let your passion for music encourage us to work with what we have and perhaps find creative solutions to technical challenges. It is quite frustrating when we have so much more at our fingertips than we did with the MIDI of 25 years ago but are still at times unable to use it because our computer says no. Seems we always want just a little more because the more we have to create with, the more we want to push the boundaries of that creative work. I appreciate the free content you have and are providing as it has helped me learn much about the nuances of sampled Orchestral music so many thanks to you for that. When we can make the music of our heart, life is beautiful!

Is there a way to add a virtual or physical mod wheel (expression wheels) to control playback sound on note entry software like Musescore?
@celiofrancois
@celiofrancois 3 года назад
@@ShirlyLyubomirsky No, I don't think so. On Musescore you can only use dynamics: musescore is really a beginner app. You can change the expression and the dynamics easily with enveloppe points, but an irl mod wheel is better ofc. If you want to compose you can use Mixcraft (I use Reaper) for the DAW and BBC SO for the plugin/library (if you want to compose for a realistic orchestra: www.spitfireaudio.com/bbcso/ )
@ShirlyLyubomirsky
@ShirlyLyubomirsky 3 года назад
@@celiofrancois I have Mixcraft and I do want to transition to composing on a DAW instead on notation software. It's a mental shift. But I believe the MOD wheel is key to improving my sound, which u r right, is not an option on notation software. I just tried NotePerformer on Sibelius, I believe Artifical Intelligence is the future, but the sound is not as good as BBC sound. But do u find that the solo instruments on BBC library too echoey.

@pariszelfora

I'm trying to familiarize myself with cakewalk too and work from there. It's my best bet for a free DAW since I can't afford a lot of things at this moment ^^" I'm also at the stage where I'm setting up my studio. I have a Yamaha PSR620 (practically a dinosaur I guess?)~^^" but still has a midi output thing so was wondering if I could still use it instead for now. I like the drawer-type of keyboard/piano that I see a lot of composers using cos it seems practical and saves space ^^" Thanks for sharing this video Marc, I had the wrong idea that I need to get the fastest and highest ram and storage PC/imac to run the studio! ^^"
@FDimmick
@FDimmick 2 года назад
@@pariszelfora the psr620 should connect if your audio interface has the same kind of midi in/out. It’s a little bit of a learning curve to get any DAW to work with an external midi device but very doable. Up to windows 10, I’ve not had any limits to using old midi equipment like new equipment once connected properly. I use an old pcr300 for external controls and keys. Sometimes the drivers/apps for the old system get out of date, mainly for the control surface. FYI, there are some RU-vid and Facebook groups for Cakewalk by Bandlab that are very helpful. Best of luck.

I've been in desperate need of a new computer for a while. My laptop is over five years old, and only has 5gb of RAM. I have been fortunate enough to start working on some projects this year, all for free or very cheap at the moment, but I am constantly having to freeze things and render them in place when working with more that 5-6 instruments. This makes my workflow very flow because I am constantly unfreezing and refreezing to edit things. My MIDI keyboard is also old, was bought used, and has become unreliable. This setup would help me immensely! Good luck to everyone who is entering the giveaway!

Great video on what can be done on a budget and yet keep it expandable! The controllers are the most important thing for providing realism on a budget. You could add a WORLDE EZ control 9 (when on sale) and probably still keep the package under 1000,, especially if you replace the library with the free orchestral libraries like Alpine or ProjectSAM free Orchestra. Substitue Bandlab Cakewalk and you eliminate the limited track issue.
