In this episode of Cinematography Style I’ll be analysing the work of probably the most well known DOP of all time - Roger Deakins. Looking at examples of movies he's shot, summarising his cinematic philosophy and breaking down the technical gear he uses, will provide insight into his visual style.

I love that Deakins is on record saying that he'd shoot a movie on a phone if it fit. He doesn't care about the tool itself, but instead on how a tool gets the specific message across. Weather it's an Arri Alexa LF or 16mm film camera. An interviewer once asked him what he think of Tarantino bringing back Ultra70mm in Hateful Eight.and he was pretty meh about it. He just said that it's just another tool. Which perfectly describes his philosophy.
@InDepthCine
@InDepthCine 4 года назад
I totally agree with that philosophy. I made a video called 'The Medium Is The Message' which comes to the same conclusion - pick the medium that is most suited to tell the story (be that a smartphone or Imax).

@@InDepthCine I watched it. I seriously mean that the more videos of yours I watch the more love this channel. For me cinematography has always been the most interesting part of filmmaking as it is the way the viewer gets to explore the world of the film. Of course editing, acting, set design, costume design, ect play a huge part in that too. But the composition and lighting dictate what to show and what not to show. And as your channel talks about all things cinematography, it really resonates with me :)

I was not familiar with Deakins. I saw recently his work in Kundun.Loved the cinematography,masterpiece. The predominant golden shade in the scenes composition,the landscapes,the opulent ceremonies,ritualistic dimension,monastic court etiquette. Really stunning work

He’s so correct that people have become obsessed with the megapixels and raster of cameras instead of the composition of the shots.
@Nexowl
@Nexowl 5 месяцев назад
I remember, when I first started with photography, a lot of people told me that „my camera makes really nice shots“, when I shown them my work. So they had no clue, how long I've tried different lighting settings, added objects to the scene to balance it, chosen different outfits for a interesting color scheme and tried to make a pleasing composition in general. Especially a lot of people, who are not in this kind of stuff are like that. Gear doesn't bring talent, neither does it bring experience. Most of the time is having less the best way to learn things. So I am pretty sure that skilled people like Roger Deakins could shoot a great story with just a smartphone, and it will look insane.

Roger Deakins is my favourite cinematographer. He's just uber cool! He really is like a rolling stone member. I remember a video about digital vs film. He on one side saying it's way more practical and putting down a munch of practical, technical and respectable reasons why digital is better. And Tarantino on the other side just saying bunch of romantic things about film that didn't say much. Deakins is amazing.

how exactly does Deakins create his LUTs? Does he go location scouting, take sample images in the flat picture profile and then pre-build LUTs that way for the various situations?
@InDepthCine
@InDepthCine 3 года назад
Nice question. In the article in the description Deakins describes how he worked with his colourist Mitch Paulson at EFilm to develop a LUT when the Alexa came out. So originally I imagine he would've probably brought in some Alexa test footage and then graded it with his colourist until they had a general LUT that he was happy with. He doesn't mention if he uses one LUT or if he has different LUTs for different lighting conditions (day/night/etc). This LUT then gives his colourist an idea of what look he wants, so when they do the final grade he'll tweak the colour based on this LUT.

@CraigBickerstaff

From the sounds of things back when he shot In Time he worked with a colorist to create a LUT that was based on his work on True Grit. I think he's used that same LUT ever since.
