A revisit to Circle Centre Mall!
"Circle Centre Mall is an indoor shopping mall located in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. Circle Centre Mall was opened to the public on September 8, 1995, and incorporates existing downtown structures such as the former L. S. Ayres flagship store. The mall is anchored by Regal Cinemas and the offices for The Indianapolis Star. The space occupied by former anchor Carson Pirie Scott is vacant.
The mall consists of 99 stores on four levels with a gross leasable area of 729,981 square feet (67,817.5 m2). When first conceived in the 1980s, it was intended to contain the existing Ayres and William H. Block department stores along with one or two others new to the city. Before the mall could open, both the Ayres and Block stores had closed, leaving Nordstrom and Parisian (later converted to Carson's) as anchors.
The third level features a food court. The fourth level features entertainment venues (Tilt Studio and a nine-screen United Artists movie theater), but also now contains non-retail tenants.
The construction of the mall cost $307.5 million. Efforts were made in its design to incorporate historic elements, such as the retention of the facades of buildings that had previously existed on the site.
With the closure of Nordstrom in 2011 and that of Carson's on April 29, 2018, the mall has no department stores. In response to the changing retail conditions, the mall has looked to non-traditional mall usages; in 2014, for example, The Indianapolis Star moved its offices into part of the space vacated by Nordstrom.
Circle Centre covers approximately two square blocks in downtown Indianapolis, one block south of Monument Circle. It is bounded by Washington Street on the north, Meridian Street on the east, Georgia Street on the south, and Illinois Street on the west. Maryland Street splits the north block from the south block.
The mall covers 7.2 acres (2.9 ha), with a parking garage on the opposite side of Illinois Street covering 2.0 acres (0.81 ha) and connected by a sky bridge. Two underground parking garages underlay the mall itself. The mall contains 960,000 square feet (89,000 m2) of space, of which 793,700 square feet (73,740 m2) is leasable.
Circle Center was laid out in a "dumbbell" shape, with the two anchor stores at each end connected by a skylighted spine lined with stores. The ground level is split by Maryland Street, but the second, third, and fourth levels are joined by a wide sky bridge. On the first level, the anchors and a number of restaurants have entrances directly from the street. The fourth level contains the movie theater and other entertainment venues, but no other retailers.
The mall is connected on the south, west, and northwest to the Indianapolis skywalk network, connecting it directly to the Indiana Convention Center, Lucas Oil Stadium, and twelve hotels (including the Omni Severin Hotel, Le Méridien Indianapolis, Conrad Indianapolis, Embassy Suites, Hyatt Regency Indianapolis, Marriott Indianapolis, Westin, Crowne Plaza, and JW Marriott Indianapolis). The northwest connection leads to the Artsgarden that is suspended over the intersection of Illinois and Washington streets." Pulled from the Wiki

My dad used to take me to Indy from Bloomington to go to a Colts game every year in November or December, and before or after the game we would go Christmas shopping at Circle Centre. It was such a cool mall and I looked forward to it almost as much as the game. It’s sad to see what has happened to it. I live in Indy now and haven’t been inside Circle Centre in years, and there’s nothing to draw me back.

Nearly a decade of planning and development for barely 15 years of relevancy, if that. The Fashion Mall opening in 2008 signaled the slow death of CCM that continues to this day. My wife and I went one time in 2018 and it was a complete ghost town on a Saturday evening, pre-Covid. I can't imagine what it's like in 2024.

One of my first jobs was at Abercrombie & Fitch. I used to feel so important driving all the way from New Palestine for $5.50/hr AND we had to pay to park. BUT we got a discount on clothes LOL I had to print directions off of Map Quest just to get there and gas was only .85/gal. Sure do miss those times!!

In fairness to Indy, themed restaurants, specifically PH and HRC, are dying in North America as a whole. PH is gone completely and HRC has closed over half of their US locations in the last 10 years.

I think it was a great idea, about 10 years too late. The middle class had already taken its beating by Reaganomics by the time it was up and running. I use to go there to get authentic Colts jerseys, I think that's all I ever spent. Some art galleries and art sculptures throughout would have given it a better feel. It didn't have the feel of shopping in the old downtown of the 50s. More like a fancier suburban mall. Well, shopping is over with as an American past time. Now folks just set on their couch with their Costco big slurpy and big crunchy while shopping Amazon. Not sure if they could even walk a mall or make it back to their auto. Parking seems limited for Big ASS U Vs and Big Ass Trucks.

@ltwig476
@ltwig476 Месяц назад
@@ThePaperKhan I travel a bit and my $120. Costco membership has saved me on fuel, restaurants and bulk items such as paper goods, cereal, nuts, honey quinoa, hemp seed, vitamins. Also, pick up cheap good quality shorts or other wear. It's warehouse shopping. You must keep your head about what you purchase and a healthy lifestyle. I go there about once every 6 weeks or 2 months and spend $250 on bulk items. I see many other shoppers with carts full of candy, chips, soda, generally unhealthy foods in bulk for cheap. I'm semi minimalist who avoided Costco for many years until this latest post covid price gouging. I toured the store in my area with a friend and did the math before signing up. Again, it's about keeping your head and sticking to a list. There are massive of poor attractions in that warehouse.

I would visit Union Station in downtown Indy when I covered the basketball state final 4 and other events as a journalist in the ‘80s and ‘90s. I changed careers and have seldom gotten back to the city. I’ve never been to Circle Centre, and it looks like it may have peaked and fallen.

Circle Centre killed off the bazaar at Union Station. So many choices in the food court and little shops throughout. Always packed at lunch time.
@INDYFA

Union Station started its decline when all the unsupervised unruly kids started hanging out there at night and being a total nuisance to the degree that shops started losing money and ultimately the paying public stayed away. I know several people that owned shops there….

@@INDYFA Not to belabor the point but the Simons refused to connect their precious mall with Union Station. There eventually was on locked doorway where hotel guest could pass thru with their keycards but that was it. I think parking was one of the biggest issues with this mall. People hate parking garages and theres only street parking around it or paid parking lots in the city. That made shopping here difficult to begin with, then once the anchor stores left people just didn't see any reason to shop when you have greenwood park mall on the south side and caslteton square and fashion mall on the north side. All of which are still very busy to this day. Malls aren't dying in Indiana, just this one.
