Once we are born it is 100% guaranteed that we will die. We can’t avoid death but in our western society we shy away from it. We lock it behind closed doors, don’t often see or talk about it and become afraid of it.
Spending so much time on high mountains I am constantly faced with death. The death of others as well as having to acknowledge the risk of my own death. To face my fear of death has taught me so much about myself and my true nature.
When I interviewed Phunjo about her Everest speed ascent she shared this story. Everest (Sagarmatha) is revered by the people of Nepal. The mountain is the mother goddess of the world. She said when she was on her summit push she came across the body of a climber that passed away. Her first thought was that climber was blessed to have died in the lap of god. She then prayed for them to have a better life in their next life and continued on. I cried when I heard her words as they were so honest, so raw and made me look at my own beliefs around climbers dying on the mountain.
