That is a really cute skirt! But, I know of a way you can hem the skirt and avoid any puckering! You need to sew a basting stitch, maybe not your longest stitch length, but not a normal one either. The reason you can't normally hem a circle is because there is more fabric on the edge, than there is space in the place you're trying to fold it. You seem very intelligent, and an experienced seamstress, so I am sure I am just telling you something you already know. But the stitching will create a perforated edge that allows for much easier folding. Another trick you can do is to cut notches before you fold it over. This will help ease the fabric into folding over, because it won't be putting as much stress on the fabric. Than you can fold over the hem twice to create a very nice rolled hem. Just thought i'd let you know hehe, it takes a bit longer as well but it makes hemming so much easier! Thank you for an informative tutorial. I know what i can use my old wrapping paper for now! hehe.
I love April's videos! One tip for novices: it is not just okay that there are puckers on the underside of the hem, it is inevitable that there will be puckers on the underside of the hem. One way that I manage this is to run 2 long gathering stitches along the bottom of the circular hem, about 1/4" apart, and put them up very slightly as I iron the hem over. That way the "extra" fabric can be very evenly distributed on the underside of the hem. The hem should be quite narrow to minimize this problem. I agree 100% that you should use a lot of pins when putting up a hem like this, as well as steam iron the hem before sewing it. With a full circle skirt, a slight pucker on the outside of the hem is not a disaster, but one wants to avoid that as much as possible. If the skirt is knee length or longer, a slight irregularity in the hem is really not noticeable.
Just found your channel! Thank you for showing that sewing can be easy again. I was getting really discouraged. Store bought patterns just seem so confusing so I can't learn from them. It's awesome to see a face and to hear someone explaining it! You rock!
I just made one from a mixed animal print and I LOVE it ! This helped me sooo much ! I made it a couple inches too big just to be safe ( since it's my first time ) and just trimmed it off when I pinned everything together . I must say , in in love with the results , thanks !
You are the absolute best! Thank you so much you are helping me learn to sew at 40 years old, this has been something I have always wanted to learn to do
Ah! Thank you for this! Perfect timing, I was wanting to sew a skirt during this break, but I had no idea how to go about it without elastic. This is so easy to follow.
this was the very first video i have ever watched and i would get so frustrated i didnt even get all the way through it but now watching it again it all makes much more sense
Your such a good sewer! I sew too but I can never do it on my own I normally use a patten but it just gets confusing. You make it so easy to understand it makes me want to sew more. I love your channel btw
I love this skirt!!!!!!!! My sewing machine is so jacked up (it barely sews and when it does sew it looks really weird) so after I hemmed the bottom I hand sewed on some daisy trim! It looks great although I wish I were able to leave it as is. Thanks for the tutorial!!!
I love all your tutorials!! You make everything so simple, yet so beautiful! Love it! Question: When sewing the hem after ironing and pining did you leave you presser foot up to allow yourself to guide the direction you were going in?
Thank you for this I had such a hard time hemming my dress. Now I know what to do...also I bought a serger thanks to you. :) It was brand new non open box from craigslist for $100.
I don't sew at all I'm pretty much use less when it comes to it but I just love your tutorials and watching you work. I wish I could make the things that you can. I've only been watching your videos a day and I'm already a hardcore subscriber
Like you said, there were a bunch of other tutorials on circle skirts. Hands down though, your tutorial was the best! And I loved the fabric you chose, too. :))
I like this video cause it teaches me really well on how to apply a zipper easily on a back of a skirt and now I can incorporate this into a dress as well. And it helps visually seeing this and how simple it is. Now I don't find zippers so intimidating
A long time ago I wanted 2 make a skirt and I looked at some videos and didn't really helped. This video puts into detail and it's going w help me a lot.👌
I love to sew and I've done many projects I love your tutorials so much please don't quit!!!!! Your so freaking awesome!!!! And I think you should make a video on how to make a tutorial on how to make a gown
Thank you so much April! I tried sloabn's tutorial on circle skirts and mine came out way too short and too frilly :( I like your method better so I think I'm gonna give it a try!
I've used that fabric to make a dress! it was my first dress ever and I used this tutorial and some math to figure out how to make it... no wonder I refused to get one of the discount fabrics after I saw this one... because I saw it on you!!!
This is so great! Thank you! Could you do an illusion neckline tutorial?? Taking a sheer fabric and connecting it to another? I can't figure out how to make the hem!
Me encanta tu trabajo enserio eres admirable tienes una suscriptora mas soy de México que padre seria que hicieras blogs en español pero si no pues no importa seguiré usando el traductor google jijiji saludos !!
Last week I made one but to hem I folded quarter inch, sewed all around, then folded another quarter inch and sewed all around once more. It took a bit of time but the hem was beautiful when I was finished. I did it tht way cuz I knew I wouldn't be patient with an iron
Could make a tutorial on a long sleeve circle dress? I could never find a single tutorial on a long sleeve dresss. :) Thank you! You are incredibly talented.
Love your tutorials. I haven’t sewn in years but your videos are inspiring me to dust off the machine!!! Also, the link for the circle skirt chart doesn’t work...
Thankyou so much! I love these skirts and i'm about to go to uni so i can make so many without spending so much money. P.S. I love your cute slippers :P
For the hem, making it smaller at 1/4" would help the back look a little better. Also, for more intermediate or advanced sewers a rolled hem would work just fine too. Great tutorial! :)
I loved the video. What brand sewing machine did you use? I know you said you had a Juki serger. You did a fantastic job. Keep on making the tutorials.
if i hem the skirt, should i make it a few cm longer than i wanted to be long? i mean, you foldet it two time, this takes about 2-3 centimeters away from the lentght? BUT i love this tutorial and i am so inspired to try this :)
just wonder...what kind of pen did you use to mark your fabric? and i plan to make a formal dress for a party. i like to use silk fabric for my dress. will your pattern fit right for none stretching fabric or do i have to use different pattern for my type of fabric? please help me. I'm a beginner and i have never sew any clothing before, so i have no idea what I'm going to do. thanks in advance. :)
Hi April, thank you for all your great videos. I'm only 4'9" tall; really having a hard time to buy a dressing pants for work at the office. Is it possbile to teach me how to make a simple, just plain dressing pants when you have a share time; please. Thank you in advance for all your help!!! Keep your good job!!!
You have probably gotten this question already, but is there a chart for larger sizes? I am making this skirt for my sister, who has a 34 in waist, and am probably gonna make myself one, and I am 38 inches. There is probably a pattern to the different measurements, but I wouldn't want to make a mistake with the numbers. Thank you!
It looks so nice!! i will certainly make one... i've wanted a nice skirt for some time now, but the ones that are currently being sold i dont like the fabric they use... so i guess this does the trick :D do you have a tutorial for a pleated skirt?? i read one on instructables that looks pretty good but i dont get the measurement part and some other things.
yeah so instead of 2 inches, make it like 3 or 4, or however wide you want it. easy way to look at it is: how wide do you want your waistband, and then double that number. since i wanted my waistband 1 inch, i made it 2 inches and added seam allowance :)
I've watched so many circle skirt videos and none had tips for hemming ! Thank you so very much! I've made one but now I'm positive I can make a better one thanks to your video!
