Cirque du Soleil Acrobat tests an 1890s Sports Corset

Let's test out my 1890s Sports Corset, modeled after the Ferris Good Sense Bicycle Waist! I will wear the corset for a full day of training, making sure to practice all of my normal movements and tricks, and see how the corset holds up to the activity. Will it impede and hinder certain movements? Will there be things I literally can't do at all because I'm wearing it, or will it be just like a bulky sports bra?!
This is my first time wearing a corset for an extended period of time, so that was an experience that I was quite eager to try, as I had no idea what to expect from it. Add the acrobatics on top of that, and you have a very interesting combination of.... hobbies? interests? experiences?
And just to head off any questions right here and now, no, I am not currently working for Cirque du Soleil, we have worked for them in the past, but one has to attract your attention somehow. The title is technically not inaccurate - I am an acrobat (although I prefer the term contemporary circus artist; it conjures fewer images of elephants and sawdust) and I have worked for Cirque du Soleil, so... one has to appease the SEO gods, right?!
Also, just gonna tag ‪@JillBearup‬ because I have heard that she quite likes the combination of corsets and circus arts ;-) Jill, if you're reading this, I adore your channel, and am a huge fan... if you ever want to choreograph an acrobatic fight scene (à la "Princess Bride), just call my name and I'll be there, ready to learn and flip!

Oh yea, definitely throw Miss Adventure Heroine in a sports corset all day long if you like, she should be able to handle it without a problem... as long as there's a nice chemise/drawers/etc layer under there for hygiene and easier laundering routines! But if you're considering the topic of sports corsets, you probably already knew that! 💙💚

That's definitely not a subject I've seen any content on.

all of the costumes I wore when I was doing classical ballet had a corset like bodice with boning because they were based off of costumes from the romantic period (1830s-40s, thereabouts), and really sucked you in, though they didn't go past the waist really, maybe only a little bit but not much. Anyways, if I was able to do all the dancing I did (and I had what was considered a larger bust for a ballet dancer and I was super strapped into that bodice) with no problems, I highly doubt it's the corset that's the problem when certain people say corsets are bad for you health, lol
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
No, I’d say it’s generally not that corsets are bad for your health or anything of the sort? (I never really believed that, and this video was not so much an attempt to bust that myth as it was a fun experiment to test the limits of the sports corset! Although Lina Piprek has a great video about corsets and on-stage actors (as a costume designer in the industry) and she raises some really good points!

HAHA, oh, see I like purple too, but not necessarily that shade, and also not the colors of all the neon chairs that are spread out in the building 🤣🤣 I'm glad you enjoyed the video and the intersection of your two interests. There's a bit of circus in my Recycling Rosie Onesie (I made it as a warm-up suit for backstage), and a bit of historical dress (more strictly historical in the next month or two), but mainly its more history-bounding with a side of corgi and circus and a healthy dose of recycling, so please feel free to stick around and poke through the video vault, see if anything else tickles your fancy!!

I'm so happy that epic warm-up sequence is getting another airing! It would be interesting to see if wearing something over the corset makes any difference to the issues you noted. I'd love to see a bit more about how those spheres of your life intersect. So yes, absolutely, historical circus costume (I think you showed a picture once of a lovely dapper lady? I forget her name), but actually also insight into the modern performance clothes you make for yourself (and Phil!). They must have some unique design requirements that could be interesting to see in practice - they'd need to be robust, sure, but also allow for full range of motion, presumably no awkward seams to chafe under a harness, will be cool enough that you don't overheat, etc, etc. (And always Cannelle! Those wiggling little 'tocks are a thing of joy!)

The spinning just takes some getting used to (I mean, I don't have vertigo, so I don't mean to imply that all YOU'd have to do is practice... just that for ME, that was the case), but it was certainly a fun challenge to take on, wearing the corset and seeing how it'd affect the training!

Just beautiful! I very much like the whiteness and structure of the corset as part of an outfit. It is unusual in style, and I look at it differently of course, but I see it now with a type of bloomer-like garment, or atop a crazy structural garment in the same material, thinking theatre of Bauhaus costumes : ) Very unpractical I imagine, but I'm not an acrobat : ) I second the sentiment that I would also like to see historic circus costumes recreated, since I happen to have always liked that type of thing, and there's enough of the same historic recreations going on on youtube already... but you do you, and I'm mostly keeping my fingers crossed for your channel to go viral, since that is absolutely what you deserve with your original and creative content!

Its a story set between 1890 and 1905, and I'd love to see what sort of costume you'd make if you were a performer in that circus. My guess is that the first video had more of a "Historical costumer investigates the properties of a sports corset" vibe, while this remake has more of a "Look! HOW tf do I first now notice that you are Danish? I was like HEY this is my city :O I hope to bump into you at some kind of historical sewing meetup here eventually, it really is a tiny country XD Really fun to get a bit of insight into the circus building as well! I would absolutely LOVE to see more of both your suggestions. (For my fashion and textile design BA project I made costumes for contemporary circus so your whole deal sure is exiting to me!)

Unfortunately I'm not Danish, I was only living in Denmark for that contract (which turned into a three year gig thanks to the pandemic), and now I'm back in Montreal. I never really found a historical costuming group to hang out with (I knew of Ditte, but she always struck me as more vintage than historical)... I REALLLLLLY wanted to go back for the tweed ride this past autumn, but unfortunately the timing didn't work out 😢 But I'd love to do it some day... we have enough friends in CPH that we try to visit as frequently as possible!

Oooh, yea, it'd be tricky to teach a safe class without ever touching the students, I could see how that would be maybe not the best mix. Sorry your experience wasn't a full win, but I'm glad you enjoyed the video!! Thanks for watching

Hello and welcome aboard! An art historian... that's so cool! I've been looking at lots of historical circus art and posters lately 🎪🎨 Sounds like there are lots of things on the channel that will interest you - I've got corgi costumes and doggy-sized fainting couches, many sewing projects... a bit of circus pops up in my Recycling Rosie Onesie... all kinds of fun thing!!

Only a few years ago i realized just how physically demanding of a job being a circus acrobat must be. i don't have enough stamina to do a quarter of the warm-up routine you did, let alone the tricks you showed us. oh, and i'm scared of heights. and clowns. Thank you for not showing any in this video. I have a feeling the harness helped with making the yoga pants stay on ;p

LOL I feel like there are about a zillion videos out there of people do rather mundane activities in their corsets. The whole point was for me to do something a bit more extraordinary (in the original sense of the word)... I literally ride a bike every single day, so that wasn't something that felt particularly interesting to "test out" ya know what I mean!?
