Cities Skylines: Amar City - Part 11 - Airport Design

After 2 weeks of work, I'm very happy to finally get this video about the airport out - we're laying down the design for the airport in one go with the construction of the highway into the city, the runway jutting out on an artificial peninsula, short- and long term parking, and a public transport hub for the buses and light rail/metro. I also added a hangar section for storage, fuel loading stations, industrial and office zones, and a future distribution center for cargo planes. Overall, I'm quite happy with how it's turned out so far - although it still needs a lot of detailing!
I initially sketched a layout idea on a printed paper of the map - I might seriously just keep that technique in, it's very handy - and set on the single runway, oval looping road airport layout. The second part of planning consisted of laying down the airport in-game for a test run to see how well it translated from the drawings. Finally, it was time to record and build the airport in one go. So here we are.
Strictoaster's Arrowhead Junction video I talked about in the video:

It's Amazing it fits perfectly and is close enough to the city that the residents don't have to travel far but also far enough away that it won't bother the people living in Amar City

Been anxiously waiting for an airport episode in Cities Skylines from you, since I absolutely love your sandbox game gameplays and I have an enormous passion for aviation and piloting. To answer your question at 6:48 : Your runway markings are totally fine, those are US Precision touchdown zone markings. Most big international airports (outside the UK, because you often see chequered aiming point stripes there) use those markings. These stripes simply show the pilot where to ideally touch down. What you could have meant with 'somewhat different' are those white and yellow arrows that sometimes appear ahead of a runway (Like in OBBI / Bahrain - Al Manamah). Those sections are called 'Blastpad' (yellow) or 'displaced threshold'. Blastpads are there to extend the runway in case an aircraft touches down too late and might overshoot. Therefore a blastpad does not count as a part runway and isn't part of the overall length of the runway. As a pilot you are not allowed to taxi on blastpads if you are not in an emergency. Displaced thresholds move the touchdown zone further down the runway and are handy and often used if terrain or buildings are in the approach path, so aircraft may approach higher to have a safe overflight altitude over cities and terrain and touch down later. The perfect example for this is Florence Airport in Italy. Just go on Google Maps and try the 3D view. You will perfectly see the displaced threshold and the terrain ahead of it. Great video as always!

Sorry to post on a video that is 'ancient' in RU-vid standards, but here in Lithuania, long term parking solved itself. Car rental is super affordable here (almost as cheap as driving Your own) and You can leave cars in different city literally anywhere along road all around the country. People just rent a car in one town, arrive to an airport (or vacation town), drop it off. When they come back, they rent the car from airport city and drive back home. I know it contradicts Your philosophy, but You can always explain why small parking lots work ;)

I actually didn't know that about the wind direction thing. I always thought it was weird that airports would have two runways crossing at 90 or 45 degree angles. I figured if they needed multiple runways, having them intersect defeated the purpose because you could only use one at a time, and especially having them perpendicular was a very inefficient use of space in a facility that already takes up a lot of it by necessity. However knowing about those wind direction requirements suddenly makes all of that make sense.

This city would be a perfect setting for electric VTOL planes. A modern, sleek and renewable energy city with a modern, sleek and renewable energy airport. The current one is very well designed. However it seems a bit close to the city and it's quite large in comparison. This technology would fit very well with Amar city. Sadly I don't think the technology is developed for such things. Great vid though!

You should have a "park and ride" section somewhere on the outskirts with large car parks connected to the city by bus and train, so people coming to the city from the north of Bahrain can leave their cars there and travel in by public transport. Realistically speaking, people are unlikely to use the airport to come from the north of the country, as Bahrain is small and where the current airport is it would probably be quicker to drive directly than drive to one airport and take a plane. I myself have driven from the north of the country to the south, and if memory serves me correctly it only took about an hour. So given how interesting the city is, I'm sure you'd get a lot of Bahrainis visiting by car.

I was expecting airport like Sharjah airport in the Arab Emirates. In the first look the main terminal roof of the airport looks like the top of the mosque, which immediately giving the sensation of the beauty of Arab culture right before you land there. I know it's hard to make mosque looking dome in this game, but man, what an idea. Great job nonetheless!

A little late to the party here, but there is a large scale project going on in Africa right now where the Sahel borders the Sahara where residents of the areas are re-foresting the Sahel to present desertification and the spread of the Sahara. It's called the Green Wall or something like that. So there is some merit in planting drought resistant vegetation in order to make an area a little bit less desert-y. I also used to live in Phoenix, AZ where there are a lot of trees and other plants planted in pedestrian areas, and there are even misters (mist sprinklers) in areas where crowds gather outdoors to keep them cool. In an area where the temperature is regularly 40-45 C, that stuff is very necessary. Open exposure to that heat is deadly if you aren't properly hydrated and acclimated to it.
@martinthor4000
@martinthor4000 7 лет назад
btw those markings on the runway is called Touchdown zone which basically means that you have to land in that zone and runway markings vary a lot between airports it all has to do with the length of the runway.

Bizarre to hear about a 737 as an "international" plane, but I guess that's what I get for being American. Let me know if you want some Amar City planes, Silv!
@Silvarret
@Silvarret 7 лет назад
Well, the idea was never to make it an international hub - realistically a city in this location would mostly get traffic from Manama and surrounding countries, e.g. Qatar. For that kind of role, and the occasional long distance flight, I think it'll be fine; although I'm not expert of course so I'm always up for feedback. Custom Amar planes would be amazing, and though I don't need them per se, I love the job you did on Strictoastair and San Minato, so I would love to have so Amar Air (albeit perhaps with a better airline name)
@bsquiklehausen
@bsquiklehausen 7 лет назад
Here in the US, a 737 is almost exclusively domestic, with a handful of exceptions to Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean. Hit me up on Steam and we can figure out what'll be best in terms of custom stuff.

@eeeeeoww
@eeeeeoww 7 лет назад
since the 737 is a mid-range plane, I'm guessing that the airport here is more of a regional hub. like, if you were to fly there from, say, New York, you would connect through Dubai or another Middle Eastern hub, you get it?

With a size like the city of Amar City, I think the airport is way to small, it needs atleast 2 more terminals and another runway. When the population rises you will see why. And there is really small amount of security around the airport (with that I mean none). You should add some toll booths or small checkpoints, because I don't want any suicide bombers destroy this more or less beautiful airport.

You know, having big runways is not a problem. For example in my city ( Brest, France ), the runway of our airport is 4km, enough big so any type of airplane can land. But you will never see an A380, a 747 landing in my city, only A320's and 737's. And when you look you compare the airport to the city, the airport is huge, but it doesn't matter.

in California, buying/leasing electric cars is encouraged. the federal and state governments here give you a rebate for having one, and there are public chargers almost everywhere. maybe you could encourage that in the city? Not a fan of this actually. I like your work in general but here proportion seems absolutly biased; the landing runway seems too close to the "parking" runway, there is tall building everywhere which is... kinda strange, and the all set is wayyy too close to the main city ! God you imagine living in the building downtown and earing these aircraft all day ? Specialy in a new & green city like amar, urban planning will not does the same mistake as before... The parking lot and the general stuff is very well crafted, but in terms of space planning this is a bit nonscence and dull. Look sharjah internationnal airport for instance, there is space. It breath, flow, and secured.. Here, you have one aircraft missing the landing and the all thing goes boom :)
@Silvarret
@Silvarret 7 лет назад
Thanks, I do agree - although I'm personally still happy with how the airport itself is turning out, in hindsight I miscalculated the scale and it's definitely too close to the city, plus the runway is too close to the taxiway and the rest of the airport. I hope I can move up the runway to alleviate both these issues at least a little. This airport was inspired by the likes of London City Airport, but it totally doesn't need to be as compact and have its runway as close to the rest of the city as that one.
@drerri
@drerri 7 лет назад
beeeeber aircraft roaring above downtown is not a problem, people get used to it. and it doesnt actually go over downtown. i live in a city where every day hundreds of planes fly over my house. and i got used to it. and almost nobody complains. the fact that this is a small airport and doesnt have a lot of flights each day. it is even less of a problem
@SPICofficial
@SPICofficial 7 лет назад
I mostly agree with beeeeber here, there are enough real examples for exactly this around the world though . Take Burbank, Eilat (as far as runway-parking proximity is concerned), the old Hong Kong airport "Kai Tak" or especially Sao Paulo - Congonhas for instance. Of course you can't compare a city like Sao Paulo with Amar City to many extents, but there are many airports around the world that don't really meet the beauty ideals. I like Silv's airport though. Reminds me of Salzburg a little, except for the scenery, obviously.

Awsome Airport, but I think there are some plane parking spots missing where people can board via bus. It's a typical thing small Airports have to cheaply increase the plane parking count. Furthermore only having six Gates seems like way to little giving the sice oft the Rest oft the Airport. Still it's an awsome Airport 👍
