In this video I discuss the USA home release history of CITIZEN KANE from its initial VHS and Beta releases in 1978 to the historic 1984 Criterion Laserdisc release all the way to the new 2021 Criterion UHD/Blu-ray release. I talk about the film's legacy and transfer history including important aspects of older releases. While this video is not a fully comprehensive depiction of every release I tried my best to detail every release as much as possible.

Recommend a camera translator app to read that '86 CIC insert. I get a lot of use out of mine with imports! You're flexing, man. That's an impressive amount of Rosebud you got there!

I didn’t think about it that way but I suppose it is a Rosebud flex.😂

You deserve a vacation after that one, Spencer--exhaustive research as usual! I was pretty bummed out to find out that my prized copy of the Criterion CAV edition (in, alas, its black cover iteration) was the third and not the first printing. The main thing from that edition my brother (another huge Welles fan) & I thought was rather bizarre at the time was a photo in the visual essay supplement comparing Orson's facial features to a Japanese Ainu tribesman (which I suspect would not fly very well in today's more culturally aware climate)...

If I went on a vacation I’d still be thinking about this stuff or scouring whatever used stores there were for more editions of films…😆

Very impressive! I'd love to do a podcast chat with you sometime. Welles is endlessly fascinating.

Thanks for another great video. Strangely in my country Citizen Kane was only broadcast on OTA channels twice, first time was in 1976 and the other almost 20 years late in 1995, although the movie is quite popular here compared to other classic films. I don't know if there are many different versions on physical media compared to the US but I do have the warner 2001 dvd

Loving this video! Only part way through but wanted to chime in with a extremely slight tiny correction in that the colorized version of King Kong did make it to laser disc. Not sure about others but I’m a bit of a kong fan so when I found it I couldn’t help grabbing it out of sick curiosity. It’s horrific of course but definitely a change of pace. Another kong note that mirrors kane slightly: image released their own version with commentary in the same style as the Kane release you mentioned. I listened to that commentary and the criterion around the same time and I don’t want to cast aspersions but I was surprised to find moments In the image commentary that seemed totally aped (no pun intended) from the criterion version. Like not just the same info but specific ways of phrasing things that seemed just a little too close for comfort. So maybe if criterion tries and get kong out in 4K someday you can check these out.

Thanks for mentioning it. Watching the replay I realized that and said in the live chat I forgot to mention the colorized Kong made it to LD. The image commentary is indeed extremely similar with similar wordings to the criterion track. It threw me when I first heard it. Sick curiosity is the perfect description for horrors of colorization.

What kind of audio setup do you have? From the sounds of it, you've got a legacy system that's better suited for stereo or mono mixes. For example, I remember you recommending a specific DVD special edition DTS surround mix of Batman 1989 as being the best sounding. So, I tracked it down. And it was a downgrade, both in picture and audio punch and clarity compared to the Bluray 1080p Dolby TrueHD. I believe you claimed a similar thing about a specific T2 DVD and again I tracked it down (I'm lucky to have a good second hand shop in town) and again it was a downgrade in punch and clarity compared to the DTS HD Master Audio tracks found on the blu rays. I don't have an amazing theater setup, but it is 4K and Atmos/DTS-X 5.1.2, and of course things sound differently on different systems, even on the same systems with different settings. In any case, I'm skeptical of your claim that the VHS version of anything contains the best audio. Laserdisc or DVD maybe ... but I grew up with VHS. I was 12 when Batman 1989 released and got the first VHS edition that holiday season. For years, weekends were for VHS rentals. DVD and now Blu Ray completely blow VHS out of the water. Again, what kind of speaker system are you using to listen to your movies? Because that can make a huge difference in your opinion and your recommendations about the best versions of these films. Maybe you're watching all your movies on a 1980's CRT and plywood stereo speakers with tiny gauge wires? I suppose the VHS would look and sound the best on that setup. ;)

I use an Onkyo receiver and a 7.1 configuration. My speakers are vintage Klipsch bookshelf speakers, center, subwoofer and tower mains. T2 I was comparing the original design to later remixes that were based around home theater environments. For Batman 89 the older releases pre-2005 have the different sounding mix that has a warmer lower end. The 2005 dvd 5.1 had nice clarity but was a change from the previous releases-this was carried onto the initial bd as TrueHD. I’ve just always preferred how the film sounds on those older releases, particularly the Laserdisc matrix and the initial snapper case DVD 5.1 discrete. When I make specific points about audio and older releases it is either about films that were changed or remixed in later releases or films that have had overzealous usage of noise reduction and other processing that results in a track with compromises. Modern releases should be the best option but frequently and unfortunately that is not always the case.

Have you ever actually heard a hi-fi VHS tape? They sound quite good, even by modern standards.

You sound like someone who think LPs with all their hisses and pops sound better than CDs
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader 11 месяцев назад
It’s all source and mastering dependent. There are a good majority of LPs that sound better than CDs due to how they were mastered and produced. But that’s mostly for recordings and albums made before the digital era. CDs and Hi-Rez digital are far and away better from a technological standpoint, but unfortunately due to current mastering practices they’re usually not as good.

@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader Think it comes down to personal preference. There are people who like the warm sound and can handle the extra noise, hisses, pops. There are others who like the recording pristine without that extra noise even if the mastering has some compression. I am in the latter but know people who like the former
