I’m glad I found this review. I was looking for one of these with the black dial to go with my blue dial one. I didn’t know about the 8204 movement update. I was able to find one with the 8204 and couldn’t be happier! Great review! Thanks Man!
Good stuff! Glad to learn more about these. I just got the blue dial one (NY0040-17LEM maybe?) but it had a terrible, hazy crystal. Just uploaded a vid on my channel about replacing it with a double dome sapphire one with blue AR. It's GORGEOUS now. Might have to find the black dial one too...
Great Comparison, Outstanding attention to detail. Wish I had seen this a day earlier, just placed an order for NY0040, but found out I had ordered the old one, with the recessed lume pip. On second thoughts, the protruding lume pip and the flat pointer tip on the bezel, on the updated one, don't go well with my OCD, now that you have shown this. I would definitely miss the lume on the hour markers though, not too keen on the hacking part. Kudos.
Great video, pointing out the tiny differences. I own both a first year vintage and a recent one I just purchased, and I just love these watches. At a point I was deciding between Seiko and Citizen, and I turned Citizen because of mostly the same reasons you point out. Also, I keep mine on soft rubber straps, they're just so comfy, compared to the crummy factory strap which is, in my view, the biggest weakness of the watch.
Great video, i think I’ll buy myself this watch for Christmas, I’m only wondering if precisely this one with black dial or the full lume. Thank you for this review!
I don’t know if I would call it beautiful but just like you I love the NY0040 for its distinct vintage, kind of military vibe. I am on its third iteration now and I am delighted with its now flawless lume and its unchanged remarkable accuracy that outclasses my budget Seikos. Thanks for the insightful review!
I find the applied indices and the deep black glossy dial absolutely beautiful! Also my NYs destroy my Seikos in accuracy. My SKX was loosing more then 20 s/day, but I regulated it. My king Samurai is loosing around 25 s/day. All my NYs are 2-10 s/day fast, which I much prefer!
Awesome watch I had mine for 7 plus years … it started running slow so I gave it to my nephew… didn’t know there’s a new movement version …. Might get it I loved it
@@ADcrackerjack The biggest difference is that the old one does not hack. Not a major issue and some say non-hack is actually a little easier on the movement, but I prefer it. Apparently the older one also has lower quality lume. Aside from that, as you can see in the side by side, the pip triangle is different. I don’t remember if he pointed that out or not. With that I actually prefer the full triangle of the old model.
@@cobaltpluto2019 thanks a LOT for your answer. You replied quite fast. Thanks a lot sir. I don’t know which one is on Amazon but’s it’s only 200 dls right know.!!
@@ADcrackerjack You can tell by the pip triangle, but unfortunately I have seen them listed sometimes with the incorrect photo. If you want to be absolutely certain, I would try to find a listing that states it has the 8204 movement, if you want the new. Pricing should be similar everywhere. Jomashop has them last I saw.
Excellent review and I appreciate the detailed analysis. Is the reference number for the NY004. with 8204 movement different from NY004 with the old 8203 movements? If yes, please share the new reference number, thanks.
Thanks for the comparison - very helpful. I've got the updated one, and very happy with its timekeeping & lume. One question: Has anyone tried putting their NY0040 on a unidirectional winder? Mine runs fine on the wrist, but keeps stopping when on a unidirectional winder. I have noticed that some movements don't do well on a winder, and I wonder if this 82XX movement is one of those?
Just wear the damn watch LOL. No, I get what you mean, I don't know much about winders but my guess is no watch is designed to auto wind in one direction since no wrist would move like that.
I wish they'd kept the same triangle shape instead of literally cutting the corner. And it's difficult to find the old version because all the sellers still use the same old product photos while shipping the updated design.
Misalligment would be least concern. What about highly inconsistent 6r35a while you pay a Swiss price. Better to buy a Citizen diver with 9039 for the less price.
You don't think the protruding lumed pip is a negative? Wouldn't it be better if it was recessed so it would be less likely to come off? I have a titanium citizen diver and not only is the lumed pip recessed, it's protected by glass too.
I have the BN0151 but really love the look and design of the NY0040. I've never had a mechanical watch before so this might have to be the first one. Do you find it fits that much smaller than the BN0 though? The NY0040 dial design looks like it's actually larger than the BN0 which gets smaller below the chapter ring.
Yes, the NY is stunningly beautiful, I love the style. I just wish it was quartz. The BN is noticay bigger and it wears bigger. However, both wears and looks great on my 6.5 inch wrist. The BN is more massive and more toolish, the NY is more dressy and beautiful. I enjoy both of them very much!
I like that quartz is always ready, grab-and-go, and accurate. Mechanical watches stop if you don't wear them (after like 40 hours or so, depending on the movement) and accuracy is hit or miss. That said, the movement in the updated NYs is as good as it gets, I have no complaints. I actually prefer them over my Seiko movements.
Nice video. Makes me feel better about the new version, because I originally regretted selling the old one. So differences are: lume pip no longer covered by glass; triangle cut; lume pip bigger; better lume in general; 8204 hackable movement instead of 8203. Anything else? Is it true rhat the bezel now has a steeper angle towards the dial, less flat? And do you know why it still says 8203 on the new dials although all new versions clearly have the 8204, as stated on the casebacks?
Thanks! You summed it up pretty much! Don't think the bezel is steeper. The printing on the dial must just be cost saving I think. I guess they have tons of dials with the old printing left.
I bought and received my Coke bezel, newer Miyota 8204 module 2 days ago. It is as charming as my Seiko Monster and Orient Kamasu. Definitely a keeper. About the lume pip ar bezel, it is laying flat underneath and protected by the bezel, so I don't see possible damage by accidental knocking. Of course the dial wordings and placemrnt are different between the old nad new. Is the lume colour different between the old and new version? Since you have few of them, may I find out if it is common as I am new to Citizen watch. Whenever I turn the crown to change day, will meet with great resistance never fet before in other mechanical movement at half way. I need to apply 'brute' force (feels like breaking wheel teeth) in order to advance to the new day. But if I back off and reverse the crown turning as soon as I feel the resistance, day change and advance to the new day. So I just rock back-and-forth at the crown without full crown turn to change the day. Thanks for the video.
These watches are excellent for the price. My favourite also. One thing I would point out though, the new movement is not as accurate nor as smooth...I still prefer my old 8203 movement watch as it is still within a couple of seconds per day.
I used to have 5 NYs with the new movement, all of them were 5-15s fast a day, which is perfect for me. All my Seikos lost around 30s a day, before I regulated them. Citizen consistently beats Seiko both in quality and accuracy. I like Seiko, but they have no excuse.
Quick question. I’m thinking about getting this same watch from jomashop. How do I know if it’s the 8203 or 8204? And also what’s the difference between the two movements? I’m still new into what hacking is.
It seems as though it looks like the older one from the lume pimp and back side movement cover having less text. I don’t really know the differences between the new and old.
@@hotshotplanespotter124 the lumen pip and the triangle is different on the new ones, as I show it in the video. The old can oly hand-wind. The new one can also hack, i. e. the seconds hand stops, if you pull the crown all the way out. It's nice when setting the time.
Thanks for the informative video! But this doesn't help my watch addiction tho... btw, does the lume on the updated version glow the same green as the older version?
I think it's all about money. They didn't want to offer such an affordable, real diver any more. But I would happily pay more for the SKX, with the 4R36 movement.
I still dont get why they put the crown on the left side on an automatic... I have the Eco-drive version where the crown is on the right side. Have 3 Citizens and they´re all great!
Basically these watches were designed for mothers who are reminded to change the diapers at 12 and feed the baby with a milk bottle at 6 and 9 o clock which identified on the dial . After done that go for a deep dive in the ocean.
@@engineercave007Are you serious? If you make a review, and ligth up the markers and not understand people want to see it in dark, why else should you light it up if not to see how the lume works? Your comment are rude and stupid.
