I think the NY0040 looks more 90's, but the NY0086 (Pepsi bezel) and NY0085 (Coke bezel) look a bit more updated became the bezel font is not as bold as the black versions. To me it makes a lot of difference in the way it looks and the colors seem more bright. I just pulled the trigger on a Pepsi bezel one! Perfect watch for the summer! Found it on eBay for $215 with the metal bracelet + additional rubber strap New. Also saw a couple of options for $199 with just the rubber strap.
This watch is superior in every way to the SKX, for me. You cant get an SKX to be accurate unless its your only watch and you constantly wear it. The Citizen is accurate however you use it. Also, being windable is such a huge boon nay essebtial for any watch. Seiko, what were you thinking? Oh yes, you wern't, actually thinking. Seiko dont listen to anyone do they . Love my SKX too but only if its your only watch, then brilliant
Just received one of these today and surprisingly I found it had hacking. The movement is 8204. It normally is the 8203 so it looks like they've upgraded the movement.
Ordered one for holiday as a beater /beach watch. Mine will also be the 8204 movement. Hopefully it will be as good a time keeper as the reports online
I love this watch! and what’s wrong with the 90s pal? It was the best decade between 1989 and 2000! Nothing else compares! Looking forward to the head-to head with the SKX! And if for some reason this one ends in a tie don’t forget the shoot out! GOOOOOOOOAAAAALLLL! Thanks for another fun review!
The Citizen is far superior to the SKX in every way. I don't know what happened with the lume on that watch. Mine is nothing like this. Last forever. The Citizen is far more accurate and the dial is black as death. It's beautiful. Why would anyone want hacking over winding? The SKX is off 20 seconds a day so why would hacking even matter?
Mines running +12 spd and I haven’t set it since I bought it about a month ago. Just keep it wound and wear it every so often. I was surprised the 8204 is running so well.
I think a lot of the things people don’t like about this watch tend to be personal preferences rather than functionality. The only thing I prefer on the skx is it looks slightly bigger..
Thanks for reviewing this one - I think it is generally an overlooked watch by reviewers. The Promaster series has some history of official use, and unique designs. The quartz models with the sensors are used by the Danish Frogmen. It got further fame as seen on the wrist of the crown prince, as he was a frogman. The watch was lovingly nicknamed "Pingo", which is, or at least was, the press' nickname of the prince. These automatic models are going up in price like the SKX's. Both based on ageing but thoroughly tested technology. Aluminium bezels are not too durable, but gives a vintage look.
After taking a 6-7 month brake from buying watches(damn you COVID!)...I am on a bit of bender! 2 in the last 3 weeks and 3 more on order(this one comes in today!)... your review sealed the deal and that’s why I chose it. Thank!
Such a nice classy dive watch 👍. This one should be in every watch collection. There are aftermarket bracelets with curved endlinks, who are cheaper and feel more solid than the original one.
The watch band is fine for it's use (diving) and even features a diver's clasp to get it over a wet suit. Replacements with that feature start out very pricey.
I have a SKX J version which is a great looking watch. This citizen just wears so much better. I ended up having the blue and black version. What let’s the SKX down it’s top heavy which makes you aware it’s their.
Jomashop had a sale for these, $159 for an NY0040-17L. They are unfortunately sold out now but I got one while they were available. If you’re a fan of these 90s Promasters, you can get the at sub $200 prices.
This is at the top of my shopping list for the summer. There are plenty of eBay sellers from UK with this one. Maybe the Fugu Limited Edition, as mentioned by @y2ktube . I think it will look good on a rubber tropic strap. I forgot to mention inside joke: “underpants”.
the crown at 8 o'clock is one of my favourite features about this watch. What inconvenience? How many times do you have to adjust the time? The underwear shaped Citizen logo at 12 o'clock has been ridiculed, but it will be considered vintage in a couple of years. :-) I own this watch, it's one of my favourites. And for a watch that was released in the 90's, it still looks great. That's what you call timeless design. :-)
I found that the crown only ever needs touching until the beginning of the month. Between these and the SKX, the Citizen is miles ahead in timekeeping. I’ve found from out of the box it is better regulated and with much less variation in beat error and time keeping than the SKX. I have found that even when you regulate both watches, the SKX varies significantly in different positions. The limited variations of the 8203 movement seems better built, with less endplay in the movement train. The oyster strap on the citizen is horrible. My SKX strap is comfy. The Citizen pulls my arm hairs. But that’s an easy fix. The comfort of the 8 o’clock crown is far better for how my watches seem to sit. The Citizen indices all line up. I’ve never seen an SKX that does.
Ive got the navy blue dialed one. Bought it for work and absolutely beat it. It has gone through the shock of impact guns, rattle guns and jackhammers and stilk works/keeps time flawlessly. The only complaints is the poor quality metal bracelet and mismatched lume colour between the hands and dial.
FYI, audio very low compared to other folks videos... I own the CITIZEN NY0081-10L Fugu Limited Edition (machined crown etc.) - A slightly different version of this NY0040; LOVE mine !

There has been a lot of talk on the watch forums about what is a genuine Seagull 1963 and what is not ... needless to say it is complicated and not clear cut ... i.e. the reason you got a question about your Seagull 1963. Jody from justonemorewatch made a whole episode on this.
I can tell you why your past review of the Citizen Eco-Drive Driver came off as negative. It's because just like in this video you are full of back handed compliments towards the Citizen. It feels like you are a Seiko fan when you feel you have to mention the SKX after every feature of the NY0040. This watch stands on it's own and has been well regarded in the diver community for nearly a generation. Great movement, design and utility. The newer models even feature hacking, which was the only real knock on it in the past. Current prices on Amazon; Citizen $220's....Seiko $570. Ouch!
