I am so happy to hear you say CONCENTRATED CitroSolv!!! Most videos don't tell you this and I didn't know and bought the regular unconcentrated kind and it DID NOT WORK. Needless to say, I was upset and also, I couldn’t find the concentrated CITROSOLV anywhere so had to order it on line.
I did the Ctrasolv and National Geographic art technique yesterday afternoon. One word of warning, its messy and not good for my bird to smell. I was on the porch with a roof over it and for added drama there was a blowing rain storm at the same time. So my word of warning, do it OUTSIDE, it's smelly and messy and use rubber gloves as the artist is doing in this video. Use a lot of newspapers, under your magazine. So, today......some of the papers didn't work as described. I left them on the porch all night, and this afternoon, about 24 hours later, I separated the ones that were soaked, ( I did use bare hands because it's hard to separate the papers with rubber gloves) and put them in the yard (not raining) to dry. Happily it was not windy, and yes, the artist is right, use only one magazine at a time, you will be shocked at how gorgeous the papers are now that they are really dry. My 9 year old grand daughter and I have enough college papers to last for a long time, just using one magazine. I have brown paper bags in-between my sheets.
I did find out that leaving them closed to dry was not successful. It worked better to play around with them all wet and goopy and then - when you like what you see - set it aside to dry. I don't have a yard (jealous!) so I hung them to dry on a panels by stapling them at the top - it was a pain in the butt though and I wouldn't recommend it. If only everyone could have a drying rack in their house. It really is amazing just how many sheets one bottle will help you produce! Great results for a minimal investment.
Thanks for your response. The artist I named is prolific on RU-vid and seems to teach classes in places like Mexico and Australia. She seems uber creative and I guess I assumed a lot of what she does is original. But I guess when it comes to art it is hard to track down origin. Anyway I am learning a lot from all sources. Great video series. Do you know if it works with non US issues of the N.G.? I just tried it with a couple of Danish issues and after an hour nothing has happened.
Sure the cover may not be good, but the ink on it is, and could be placed against one of the pages that is less good, or utilized in some way for the paint, could it not? Just a thought for some of those pages that are not quite as good.

I think other magazines with the type of printing that NatGeo uses would work in theory. I tried a couple of different things and they didn’t work for me personally- it’s been so long I can’t remember which magazines I tried. It’s still worth experimenting to see if you can find something with base imagery you like. I always thought fashion magazines would make interesting pieces. Best of luck!
I looked up the specs about what is in citrasolve it has formaldehyde! Wear a mask and gloves! And will the images be archival? Meaning will they last well

I hope you can help me, I used exactly the same Citrasolv you showed and my NatGeo is from 1989. It is kinda working, but it took forever to start (while yours start to bleed right away, apparently). I used a good amount of Citrasolv, so it was not that. I picked a few pages from the middle of the magazine to start (didn't do the entire magazine). Anyway, it doesn't seem to be working well. Do you have any idea about what could I be doing wrong (if anything)? Thank you so much!
As this was done a few years ago it is possible they changed the formula. However, there are different types of CitraSolv and I do know from experience that they don’t all work the same. I wish I could offer you more guidance - best of luck!

YES! Good question. I have found that the resulting pieces DO smear when you brush them too much with acrylic medium (or other collage media that are similar). I have combated this in my own collage work by sealing the pieces with a few coats of an acrylic spray sealer first. Once sealed they don't seem to smear when used with collage media (unless you don't seal them well enough and/or you over brush too vigorously).

Mine came out really black and I used the newer magazines. Would you happen to know why this would have happened? They weren't very colorful. Your videos are wonderful btw
Hmmm... I'm not sure. I know that mine go black when I do two things: not leaving enough citra solv in the fold when I close it up (and/or) when I open and close it to check to frequently and the inks mix together. It's really best to handle it as little as possible after opening the first time. If it's not wet enough, squirt some more and then close back up and wait again. And thank you for the support - I'm glad they were helpful. I really hope you get the results you're looking for soon.

Nope, as you'll note in the description I link to a blog post which details the source of my original inspiration and I make no claim to have invented this technique. In the process of my research (dated 2014) I do not recall ever seeing this name but I'd like to see what she's done with the technique as well so I'll look into her work - thanks for the suggestion. It's really great to see what new perspectives bring to known techniques - in the hands of each person every art technique becomes truly transformed. As you'll read in my corresponding post, at the time that I started looking into this Cathy Taylor was "the" name to look at so perhaps you'll find her work interesting as well. :) And, as a side note: you should check out some of the interesting theories about "original ideas" like the more notable "Steal Like An Artist" book/TedTalk by Austin Kleon - it's a good read/watch.
Gail Fuld Artists have been using Citra-Solv in magazines for years...long before the company itself knew and understood its effects on inks and paper. Pretty amazing stuff!
