The starter motor is worn and the radiator is leaking badly on the Citroen XM
Lets try to fix it... It turns out that quite a bit of stuff needs to come off..

Please talk to Nils about changing those spheres. I changed all of them on one of my XM, and it totally transformed the driving experience from being both soft and bulky - into gliding along on a flying carpet. I would also change the condensor and dry filter - they’re not expensive and life without A/C in a XM… is almost unbearable as it get hot inside and opening the winds only give noise but no air indto the cabin.

I love your philosophy. I mean it makes sense instead of tearing it down and restoring it. Which you can tear it down and you never might put it together and drive.

My feelings exactly. Such a great channel, never ending quality content with no obnoxious filler.

the XM is one of those cars that I used to hate.. but it is growing on me fast.. mostly because prices for a Citroen DS keep rising too fast..

As a long time owner of both DS and XM I can say that there may be reasons to get angry with them sometimes, but never hate them. In that way they are very similar. And also in another way. Pay the price of getting a really good one. It´s always cheaper in the long run, and it might also help you with staying sane. And that´s always an issue when Citroën´s start growing on you.

Yes we do love continuity. 🤪 I remember hours spent replacing a DS starter motor located behind the exhaust manifold many years ago. 😣

You do you Dude. While I completely understand your explanation of your approach, you owe it to no one. 🍺

You shouldn´t have to remove any exhaust parts for the starter. I know I have done it with exhaust in place, but it was over twenty years ago. Although I cannot guarantee your state of sanity afterwards. I just know I am right now coming up with excuses to postpone the same job on my own V6.24. So maybe go ahead as planned. My "guestimate" is that you should try first with maybe removing the oil filter and the heat shield of the starter. The starter is mounted to the gearbox with three bolts. Two things I would do on that car is cracking that sphere loose so it will be easy when you need to change it. The one with the thick pipes going to it is the sphere of the "stiffness regulator" or "Hydractive sphere" of the front axle. It´s not fun at all to crack loose when the nose and radiator is in place. And because it´s responsible of the softness part of Hydractive, usually people realize they want to change it pretty soon. The other thing is the thickest hose going from the hydraulic regulator (on the engine, with the main accumulator). It´s not hard when front is on, it´s just nicer now. It goes from the main regulator to the reservoir. And they always break and on the V6 you end up with a lot of LHM over the front exhaust which is rather stressful. Yep, mine was probably very close to end up in flames last summer. Oh, one more. Maybe do something about the brake accumulator. It´s the lower one of the three near the front of the engine. It´s "manifold" looks to be mounted by a hose clamp. That and the main accumulator is two spheres you really want to be good when you have Diravi. The radiator is surprisingly easy to replace on XM´s. Well, the hoses may not be that fun on a V6 but the radiator just have to "snaps" (which someone else may know the english word of) "snäppe" på Svenska... But I think you did the right thing by removing the nose anyway. Invest in your future self by cracking the spheres loose once now. And it probably helped with staying sane for changing the starter...

Again a great and informative video. Your last theory about a sensor leading to overfuelling of the engine when hot I can recognize from own experience. Although the haynes manual does not cover the V6 the Haynes "Engine Management Systems" manual does and the V6 24V (withh or without cat) was controlled by Fenix 4B. Here you both have an air- and a cooleant temp. sensor. I would go for the second, which is a NTC and by short cutting the terminals of the wire the problem of starting the hot engine should disappear - if this component has failed.

I practice "Bangernomics" (Hubnut) on my 2005 car. I'm retired so it isn't a problem if it's off the road while I try to fix a problem.🤔 Can't have too much old-school Citroen.

Interesting to see Dutch cars rot in the same place as UK cars. .. that out rigger section you found is a common UK place as well as the bumper mounting bracket.. the xm has no more spheres then a Hydractive car. 7 in total. 3 each front and rear axles and the main pressure accumilator. The v6 24v centre sphere was fitted by the radiator because there is no room for it in the usual xm place at the back of the subframe due to the straight through exhausts used... meaning the 24v v6 has unique front strut feed pipes..

Du har helt ret i din måde at sætte bilerne i stand på, det er forfriskende at det er gamle biler der kan køre og nydes, og ikke biler der er som nye og måske havner bag en rød snor på et museum.
