ABS!
Just a few millions error codes...
I did something wrong last time, which could change the outcome of the work I did!

The ABS sensor wires use Coax cable and after years of going over bumps they break internally. I normally cut the cable about 2" from the sensor and replace the section of Coax cable around the suspension area. Solder all joins and seal with heatshrink with some silicone inside. For me this has always been successful.

The later ABS Sensors for the Teves ABS can still be had for about 60 bucks, they will work on the earlier Bendix ABS Systems, the sensor connectors don't quite fit but you can make it work if you file off a bit of the plastic on them, watch out for the room between the sensor and the abs ring tho, you may have to file off a bit of the sensor where it is screwed on because the room in between would otherwise be to big. has been done multiple times by other people and me.

You got everything right :D I bet that the Golf sensor will work at the rear also as long as you get the clearance right. You also want to buy opposite side sensor to rear also (it’s just because of the angle of the connector). In your case I would use the original wiring because it’s really good quality if it’s in good condition.

With the XM you'll learn to appreciate the small gremlins, since the can't be niggle-free for any significant amount of time, and there often is a trade off between small and big issues.

You should be able to find if that sensor is active or passive, then find a sensor that is compatible with your wheel hub and just change the connector.

Hi Seppo, try a 1 ohm resistor in place of the sensor across the connections and see what happens. Many thanks from UK.

Someone above suggested the cable is probably the problem. Cutting the cable and inch or so from the sensor and attaching the resistor there would then allow you to prove that 👍🏻

I was wrong.. its a 1000ohm... but yea doing that would keep the error from coming up.. but it ABS would still not work :)

@@SeasideGarage no but would eliminate or confirm the cable from the engine bay to the rear sensor as the issue. How frustrating would it be to replace the sensor and it turns out to have been a €5 and cable and couple of hours routing it?

Great job getting the ABS to just that one code. Now the fun begins getting out the old one. You can drill out the old one being careful.

Just google for this part number "abs sensor 30280/ZAW". Its for XM leter model for front wheel, but you can adopt it for rear as well. To change this sensor in a good way you need to dismantle wheel bearing hub. You have experience from CX so you know how to do it. It is essential to measure the distance from old sensor to sensor wheel and then punch it out. Don't drill it, its easy to damege the wheel sensor, and its hard to get rid of sensor pieces. According to original Citroen documents, clearnes must be no more then 0,5mm, other wise senor will work incorrectly, and the system will report an error on higher speeds. You can also use a front RIGHT VW Golf MK4 ABS sensor and just solder original wires. But remember, distance is most importnd.

Normally abs sensor are the same sort of diameter and as long as the resistance is the same you might be able to use one from a different car take a trip to the local car breakers

Cheers, from Brazil. Citroen didn't sell that particular model in the country but I asked my mechanic and he said that probably the sensor of the Peugeot 405 or 605 might be a good fit. They're reasonably priced here (around 440 DKK).

I have a number of used bendix abs sensors.. front and rear sensors are identical just with different cables.. rear sensors are also glued in the arm... so that will be fun to remove. A front sensor will fit the rear.. also there is two sorts of mk.1 sensors, a narrow style sensor body and a fat body sensor if you fit a fat body sensor you will need to change the abs ecu to one with a 02 serial code on the end so both sensor types can be used.. abs ecu with 00 will not work with later mk.1 sensors. It all helps you TO NOT spend a rediculas amount on a sensor needlessly..

Hi, Finding used ones is really difficult, but they are most often reliable. If you can find a good rear left arm with the Bendix sensor (green plug, until 1996), it's the easiest solution. Perhaps a later ATE sensor of later cars works but these ones too have become difficult to find now. If not perhaps you can adapt Xantia sensors, but they are for other arms and for an ATE ABS.

Men vær forsigtig. Bemmsen er meget vigtige. BRD SJVD-støttet journalist Michael Frithjof Mueller Thank you Seaside Garage. ABS sensors, which have a measurable ohmic resistance, usually consist of a permanent magnet and an induction coil which transmits the change in field strength to the ABS controller when the measuring pulse emitter, which is at different distances, passes by. If such a coil is defective, almost non-conductive with a high resistance, or with an internal short circuit with a very low resistance, or if it also has a connection to the corrosion, then this generates a sensor error in the ABS controller. The problem with the repair is that the wire gauge and the number of turns of the measuring coil must be known. If the sensor is broken, the thickness of the wire can be measured. If it is possible to unwind the wire completely, its length can easily be measured. If this is not possible, there is an enamelled wire table or a copper enamelled wire calculator where the resistance per kilometre is listed for the wire thickness, or can be calculated. The length for 10 Ohm resistance at 20° Celsius can then be calculated there. The plastic housing of the sensor can be made of epoxy resin. An intact housing or assembled fragments can be used for a casting mould made of silicone or, if it is a single piece, of wax. If the sensor is burnt, the magnet may also be defective. Then the only thing that helps is to select the correct magnet from another sensor. But be careful. Bemmsen are very vital. BRD SJVD subsidised journalist Michael Frithjof Mueller Danke Seaside Garage.

Peugeot and Citroen (at that time) used different number of teeth on the ABS ring (why???) so no Peugeot sensor will work. They also glued the sensor into the suspension arm, so they are practically impossible to remove without destruction, so you will not find a good used sensor unless you buy a complete suspension arm with sensor fitted. I did buy a NOS sensor on ebay for £50 about 5 years ago, but later sold (without profit) it to another XM owner who needed one.
@tervosalminen191
@tervosalminen191 6 месяцев назад
The sensor reads pulses from the ring, it does not know how many teeth are on the ring. And ABS unit counts them. If sensitivity or resistance is wrong it would not work.

No need to spend the money, plug in a sensor for the later TEVES system. Preferrably ATE 24.0711-1631.3, but they are hard to find since they are not produced anymore. Old sensor needs to be drilled. Be careful not to damage sensor wheel. Removing wheel bearing assembly is the safer option. But no easy task, if this is not your first rodeo. Need high quality hex bits and assembly likes to cling to the swing arm even with all bolts removed. 18mm reamer is required to clean up the hole before installation of new sensor. Good luck.
