A reading of selected excerpts of Ajahn Maha Boowa's teaching on the nature of the citta.
Ajahn Maha Boowa (or Bua) (12 August 1913 - 30 January 2011) was a Thai Buddhist monk. He was thought by many of his followers to be an Arahant (someone who has attained Enlightenment). He was a disciple of the esteemed forest master Ajahn Mun Bhuridatta, and was himself considered a master in the Thai Forest Tradition. Following the death of Ajahn Thate in 1994, he was considered to be the Ajahn Yai (or head monk) of the Thai Forest Tradition lineage until his death in 2011.
Further information about this tradition and teacher can be found here: forestdhamma.org/

Really stills my heart. Mister ekhart - Ramana maharshi. All pointing so simply at the same point. So much conceit with traditions, hopefully the words here cool such hearts, as it’s cooled mine.

This is mind blowing. People call Theravada, "Hinayana" and mean it as a pejorative. These teachings certainly suggest that Venerable Maha Boowa's practice had achieved a level of insight and understanding to thst of an Arahant and quite probably an Enlightened being. .

@Gwyddion Flint years ago when I came by a book on Buddhism, it just clicked - problem was it was Tibetan Buddhism and I ordered books but I could not understand what the process was to connect with peace. years and years later I came across Ajahn Chah - then it clicked, suddenly the Dhamma revealed itself - no fuss, pomp. I try not to think on wasted years away from Dhamma but I suppose it is what it is.

People don’t call Theravada “Hinayana” Mahayana Buddhism made that term up out of its own superiority complex.

It's a misconception when put on to the Theravada school. Yet in Tibetan it is the "progressive" path building upon discipline " hinayana" Compassion Mahayana Vajrayana. Zen in essence is the actualisation of the whole thing Zazen We all wake up

The categories of lesser and greater vehicles is with regard to the intent of the practitioner. The practitioner may practice for their own benefit or they may practice on behalf of all sentient beings. The nature of intent is the energy that motivates the practitioner. The energy is an essential requirement for attaining the goal. Once the goal is attained these relative definitions are only relevant to those of us who remain unenlightened. In fact, the whole Universe is a bodhisattva. There is only one bodhisattva... the gradual erosion of ignorance through suffering. A person may willingly take on this role. However, that role is beginningless in the same way that the primordial Buddha is beginningless.

Putting the vinaya into practice is practical. Without Right View, knowledge development requires the vinaya. Understanding awakened knowledge requires Right View. Until we have Right View, our grasp of advanced knowledge is only speculative and tainted by ignorance. The vinaya is our guide to the path, Right View is our guide on the path.

It seems to me that Citta is the same as Rigpa or Clear Light in Tibetan buddhism. Correct me if I'm wrong.
@SamaneriJayasara
@SamaneriJayasara 3 года назад
Yes, they are pretty much synonymous terms. "Citta," in the way Ajahn Maha Boowa is referring to it, is the "mind's essential knowing nature". Rigpa is the mind's essential knowingness, as distinct from the citta (sems) which grasps, measures and discriminates.

Must get out of the way for the citta to flow
@SamBellGuitar
@SamBellGuitar 2 года назад
Another amazing clip, thank you. Probably a silly question. Is Citta here the same as 'universal' Consiousness (like Ajahn Sumedho and Sam Harris talk of?) Or is Citta in this case a layer of experience known by Consiousness? I understand its seen as the 'affective response system' by some teachers.
@SamaneriJayasara
@SamaneriJayasara 2 года назад
The way Ajahn Maha Boowa is speaking about the citta is that "it is the mind’s essential knowing nature, the fundamental quality of knowing that underlies all sentient existence. When associated with a physical body, it is referred to as “mind” or “heart”. Being corrupted by the defiling influence of fundamental ignorance (avijjã), its currents “flow out” to manifest as: feelings (vedanã), memory (saññã), thoughts (sankhãra), and consciousness (viññãna), thus embroiling the citta in a web of self-deception. It is deceived about its own true nature. The true nature of the citta is that it simply “knows”. There is no subject, no object, no duality; it simply knows. The citta does not arise or pass away; it is never born and never dies. Normally, the “knowing nature” of the citta is timeless, boundless, and radiant, but this true nature is obscured by the defilements (kilesa) within it." (Ajahn Maha Boowa)

That quotation is mind blowing. The perfect description of what is being call “citta” here. My only concern is that once this essential knowing is given a name (something the Buddha never did) it becomes a concept (sankara) and thus dies to the reality. I know Acariya Maha Boowa knew yo what he was referring, but the common listening will immediately make this primordial awareness into a thing to seek when it has no resemblance to what we experience as objects. Objects, including space and time, are all illusory mental constructs. Awareness falls in love with its on creations and spins on and on. Even the word awareness suggests a thing. Ugh… language. I’m just going to go meditate now. Thank you once again Samaneri Jayasara. My recent practice has shown me that the five khandas are also not objects, they are mearly fabricated appearances in consciousness. In fact all of space time is a fabrication of consciousness. If only I could get over my addiction to words and explanations. @@SamaneriJayasara
