The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion is an incredibly detailed game, so much so that almost 20 years later fans are still finding little things to discuss and dissect in the community.
Today I am taking you through a breakdown (with lore) of the City Crests that can be found in Oblivion.

The anvil crest is actually patterned with ermine. That design is used in European heraldry quite often, it’s a symbol of royalty. The shape is actually meant to represent stoats, I think it’s supposed to represent the tail not foot tracks. Good video all around though
@Angelikatosh
@Angelikatosh 6 месяцев назад
Completely missed that - there goes my seagull foot tracks theory. It was a fun ride
@andrewshaughnessy5828
@andrewshaughnessy5828 6 месяцев назад
I never noticed that until you pointed it out. You're right about the stoat tails, although ermine has black tails on white. The reversed white on black seen here is called ermines. I love heraldry, there are so many fun terms!
@alasdairmackintosh
@alasdairmackintosh 6 месяцев назад
The Brittany flag called the Gwenn-Ha-Du has 11 ermines on it. People in Brittany are called Bretons, and they have a celtic heritage. This is probably why Bethesda gives Bretons a mixture of old english/french names and showed them to be like the savage depictions of celts that the romans claimed to have fought, when coming up with the lore and design for the forsworn.
@HCSR2
@HCSR2 6 месяцев назад
@@Angelikatosh Don't give up just yet! Are there even stoats in the Elder Scrolls universe? Maybe that's what it is as a real world reference, but in-universe it could very well be little seagull foot prints. It's my headcanon now. If anything, it makes it look cute!
@DrFranklynAnderson
@DrFranklynAnderson 6 месяцев назад
Yes, it’s a heraldic pattern based on the black tips of ermine tails hanging down when they’re turned into a cloak. Look up pics of “royal ermine coat” for examples. Don’t think the top row being upside down is historic, though.

I want to mention Escutcheon of Chorrol. A very good shield the steward of Chorrol grants you if you decide to return the Honorblade of Chorrol to him. The Shield is an ebony shield emblazoned with the Great Oak. It is the coolest City-crest item in the game imo. The irony is that in the video you accept that the Oak is probably non-magical, but it might even go deeper than that. The Oak seems to really hate magic as the Escutcheon of Chorrol actually reflects magic!

I like the Rohirrim banner of Leyawiin, for obvious reasons, and find it hard to decide if it or Bruma's takes second or third place. No 1 is the Wolf banner of Kvatch. It is close to the Wolf emblem my family has been using for 34ish years and was the first town armour and shield I obtained in Oblivion. Having gone through everything with the guards and citizens of Kvatch I also feel more connected to them than any other town. I have a mod in Skyrim that gives me the shield of Kvatch. Not really counting the Imperial City's crest here, because it is the crest of the entire empire. But even with it being a dragon, I'd still choose the wolf over it...

There is an abundance of stags in County Bravil, but there's more symbolism to the crest than that. The stag on the crest is regardant meaning it is looking over its shoulder, facing sinister (wearer's left side). Looking over the shoulder in heraldry is the sign for being wary or on guard and facing sinister doesn't have an outright negative connotation, but in many places it was associated with suspected illegitimate births. Because the crest is so narrow it's hard to say if the stag is meant to be leaping (because the hooves point down) or just standing. If it is leaping, making it trippant, then the stag is effectively watching its back while running away. If just standing then it is on guard. Either way, it paints the Terentius family in a negative light as being cowardly and possibly guarded because they may not really have proper claim for their position. Other nobles look down on Bravil for how obviously run down it is, but still the Terentius family lives very well and leisurely compared to their citizenry so both upper and lower classes of society have reason to dislike the family. I always saw it as either the rule of the county had fallen to a lesser branch of the Terentius family that was just quick to rest on the laurels of previous generations while letting everything around them fall into decline, or that the current generation was just very poor at properly using their position. Count Terentius is a former tournament champion and his son is an open skooma addict. The Count sits on his throne but is very dismissive of you when you first meet him and seems put off that he might have to do any actual work. I think he also avoids risking sending out his guards not because he cares for their lives, but because he needs them to protect his position and sense of authority. One last thing to note is that throughout the medieval period, stags were something only nobles could hunt in many places, and for a noble hunting was more for sport than survival, so a stag could also represent the frivolous activities the Count and his son pursue for entertainment rather than ruling (one example being they both feast for four hours every night at dinner).

The anvil crest is ermine, or maybe ermines (silver (or white)on black) or pean (gold (or yellow) on black) I couldn’t tell, but both are kinds of ermine, which is derived from fur made out of the tips of ermine tails, it often lines ceremonial royal stuff

I've always appreciated the crests in TES, they're such nice little details, I just wish that we had expanded lore about all of the cities, holds and states. I always try collecting the hold shields in Skyrim to hang around the player houses What confused me here is that I had thought that Anvil's crest represented arrowheads or harpoons before seeing the other comments about the ermine reference. Oh well Anyways nice video, it's nice to see a new creator in the TES space!

If you keep up the “I’m a big fan of the scrolls themselves, really good read” joke (which I definitely think you should) it’d be hilarious to one day do that bit with a cloth wrapped around your eyes as if you’re blind. But no, surely that is just Henry Westons speaking :). Great video, such an original topic!

However, Anvil is in a Mediterranean style wich Britanny is obviously not, so maybe i'm completely wrong but the symbols are the same (the only difference is they have only 1 thing under it and on the Brittany flag, it has 2) Sorry if this comment doesnt make sense, i'm french speaking and my english isnt perfect at all

You are the only other person I've heard of who likes Mazoga. I really enjoy the quest and never had a problem with Mazoga herself.

Mazoga is the very first thing i do every playthrough. (aside from using the console to set Big Head to essential until i get there) I really like the cozy little lodge and having a roommate, and I think her story is actually pretty solid. The only issue is that she potentially gets killed when stealing food after a few ingame weeks if she's still within the castle, so the quest should be done asap.

For the anvil one, look up the coat of arms of Britany.

Oblivion was the first game I ever fell in love with as a kid, it's great to see it getting appreciation and lore analysis in 2024!
