Let's be honest... There's no one who could play Alec and Magnus better than matt and Harry. Matt is just the cutest thing alive and Harry is a straight up master piece. I'm so glad that they were the ones cast😍👏🏼

Jamie just had that unconventionally attractive face that made you intrigued, just like book Jace. And the sexual tension between movie Clace was amazing, Lily and Jamie’s chemistry is unmatched.

For me Jamie and Lily were much more believable and gave the overall best performance. I dont mind Clary and Jace from the show, but I just didn't really feel the chemistry and mystery that I felt with the movie couple. Also, for me Simon was perfect in the movie, so I had a hard time getting over that.

Let’s be honest, nobody can ever replace Matthew Daddario, there nothing to argue about.

Unpopular opinion : The books are better than both combined...

Having read the books and watched both the series and the movie I'd say that Lily Collins was perfect for playing Clary, she is generally such a great actress. Jamie was also a great pick to portray Jace, he was way closer to the looks and the mixed behavior of Jace. I think that Matthew Daddario was the superior pick for Alec Lightwood (seriously haven't found anyone who could disagree). Emeraude was also the better Isabelle, I know she was supposed to be colder than the show made her look but she was supposed to be sassy and interesting as well and Jemima just didn't give me the right vibes (nothing against the actress I guess it was the way the movie wanted to show the character, she did a great job) Even though I really enjoyed Alberto as Simon I think I preferred Robert in the movie. Both Magnus in the movie and on the show were really good I can't choose. I also feel like the movie did a better job when it comes to valentine, in the show he seemed way more human than he should

Matthew and Emeraude are exactly what I always pictured as Alec and Izzy,they are perfect for the roles.

lilly and jamie were the perfect clary and jace, and i cant picture no one other than matt and harry to play alec and magnus. I love emeraude, but the izzy in the books is way more cold... i'm not sure about the izzy in the movie though.

Really tho, we shouldn't compare them. The movie was the book come to life. The show is just based off the books but taking it's own path.

Okay so I really don't care if I get crucified for my opinions here so Imma have a go at this. Things I Thought the Movie Did Better: -The Institute (interior). *Much* closer to the book, and looked hella awesome. All of the rooms felt like things from the book. I feel like the exterior was too Hogwarts for me, but the interior was great. Pet peeve: Why tf is there a portal in the center of the place? Didn't click for me. No thanks. -Luke. I'm black. Don't call me racist. But I think Luke was just better executed in the movie and was much closer to the book. -Jocelyn. This is a toss up because I really like Maxim Roy's portrayal but I feel Lena Headey is just a more experienced actress and really seemed badass (GoT, anyone?). -Props. This one's pretty obvious just cuz of budget. The seraph blades, while similar to the show, didn't look like lightsabers (a concept I think the show-writers liked too much, lol), and that's a good thing. There wasn't much difference in the steles, but idk, I just felt like they looked cooler. -Chronology. I actually really enjoyed the route they took in the show, but in terms of following the chronological journey the movie did better. -Hotel Dumort (appearance). It was an actual abandoned hotel. Not an upgraded space that was under eternal construction. Didn't make sense to me in the show. That's the only thing I liked about the hotel in the movie, really. -The Shadow World in general. It actually felt like a world within our own, a trait that kind of got lost in translation on the show. Things I Thought the Show Did Better: -Delivery. The pacing of the film was kind of iffy, and I feel like the show definitely rectified this. The way each individual story was played out in each episode made sense and felt consistent. -Clary. I love Lily Collins -- but she isn't the right Clary. I personally have a deep love for Clary's character in general, and Katherine's portrayal only magnified this. When people call Clary annoying and bitchy I turn them away because their points are usually quite moot. Point is, I enjoy Katherine McNamara a great deal, and think she definitely lends herself to Clary's role. -Simon. Another toss-up, cuz Robert Sheehan was the perfect amount of nerdy-cutie in the movie, but there's something abt his appearance that threw me off. Alberto is this adorable smol bean that I think did so well with Simon and just reminds me a little of Stiles in TW's earlier seasons, so yay. -Jace. If you know me, you know my opinions on JCB. I don't like him. He's unattractive, scrawny, and I just could never really enjoy him in the movie. The only thing I think the movie executed better in Jace was his biting sass. I personally really liked the kindness and compassion Jace was imbued with in the show (plus, American accent = accuracy to the novel), but the sarcasm got lost after the first two episodes, and I miss that. Also, Dom Sherwood is the star of my wet dreams. Like, holy *shit*. -Alec. Alec was an annoying piece of shit in the movie, looked almost forty, and always seemed constipated. The show did perfectly in displaying Alec's salty interior, his love for his family, closeted sexuality, and struggles with fear of himself that I think was absolutely necessary for his portrayal. It didn't hurt that Matt Daddario is crazy hot, too. -I S A B E L L E. Izzy in the movie looked thirty seven. She was short, not supermodel pretty (as sexist as that sounds, book accuracy, y'all), and overall didn't have much substance. Isabelle in the show is not only Hispanic, but strong, beautiful, confident, extremely intelligent, powerful, and the character everyone will root for. I loved her so much, Emeraude Toubia took serious care in combining strength and vulnerability into something special. -Magnus. Don't even get me started on how bad Magnus' acting in the film was. Not only did he have next to no significance and zero chemistry with Alec, he just wasn't the correct fit (he looked awesome, tho). Harry Shum Jr on the other hand, oh holy lord. A sexy package of smart, eccentric, graceful, well-processed performance and quite possibly the best actor on the show. He brought Magnus to life in such a way that anyone with reservations over his character was instantly floored. -Institute (exterior). I hated the technology in the Institute and the overall modernness injected into it. That's not what the Institute is like. At all. No thanks. But the outside, the exterior of it was an actual cathedral that I think looked a lot less Hogwarts and a whole lot more gothic fantasy. Yes please. -Changes to the book. The show had a lot of changes, yes. But they were good ones (okay, not all, see my opinion of the Institute and the seraph blades). Ep 9 and 10 were *fantastic* and my favorite episodes of the show so far. A+ for that. -Minority representation. Two Hispanic actors, one black actor. Two LGBTQ characters. Female empowerment. Corrupt government. Racism, sexism, xenophobia. All things dealt with maturely and gracefully in the first season, and no doubt going to be furthered in the second season. Imma stop here, cuz if I went further we'd be here for six hours. I applaud anyone who stuck around to read this long (I heavily doubt anyone will, but whatever, I was bored), but if y'all do, cool! Just know, criticism of my opinions will get you nowhere. I'm here to discuss, not argue.

im biased bc i love love loveeee jamie and lily as clary and jace. i loved the books so i was stoked about a show, but was SUPER let down with the weird actress they hired to play clary. she didn't fit clary at all in my opinion. and in the book, clary described jace as a lion. AND JAMIE LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE WHAT YOU'D EXPECT A LION IN THE FORM OF A HUMAN TO LOOK LIKE. I personally love the chemistry between jamie and lily as well.the new jace didnt stick with me, he isnt bad, but he cant beat jamie imo. jamie seems more like an "angel" too. idk if its just me, but his features seem so "godly" to me, similar to those chiseled greek sculptures.

When reading the book I've always imagined someone like daniel craig lol. - Jace is also a miss. the show's got Jace's personality all wrong. He's lost all the things that make him Jace not to mention he looks nothing like book Jace. Movie Jace was also weird. He looked sickly and too stiff. In fact both Jaces were too stern looking. Jace is supposed to be charming but they failed to portray that. But maybe my vision of Jace is too specific lol. I've always envisioned someone like...young alex pettyfer as jace - Kat's acting in the first season is unbearable but she got better... Lily is still the better clary imo - The show's Lightwood are on point, no complains from me. - I prefer the show's Simon - The movie didn't have a Maia but I love the show's maia so much. she's perfect

The cast of the film was perfect, Godfrey Gao was born to be Magnus. And it fits very well with the book, not like the show where it seems like any one has read the books

Harry and Mathew are so good as Magnus and Alec that now whenever I read the books I only picture them. Idk especially Harry, they just encompass the characters and bring them to life in a really vivid way

Oh yeah, i remember Clary's character from the book was super SASSY. The girl slapped Jace across the face because he had "runed" her even without knowing if it would kill her or not. But in both movies and show they didnt really show that. I would have been satisfied if they included that scene lmao

I'm a big fan of the book series and the storyline of city of bones is the best for me. Jamie is exactly how i imagined Jace would look like and the same goes for Lily as Clary. I think the actors did an awesome job playing their roles and having the right personalities that matched with the books. I fell in love with the movie immediately, the cast, the storyline, beautiful snapshots. But the show is killing me. I know it's just an adaptation and it doesn't have to be the same, but for god's sake the cast is weird, none of them matches with the book and their personalities are just terrible. I hated the relationship between izzy and clary, because in movie or books they had to work on it and in the show izzy is a weird little flirt who takes clary like a sister from the first moment. And jace and clary were not friends from the start and jace was sarcastic but also kinda sweet and you actually saw how he cared but also didn't wanted to trust her or get too close to her and in the show they just skipped this part. JAMIE IS MY ONLY JACE

I fell in love with the movie the first time I watched it and to this day it’s still a fav, I never really could get into the show because I began with the movie and the people look very different in the show vs the movie so I prefer the movie but I have great respect for the tv show

I’ve been reading through these comments, agreeing to some of them but disagreeing to others, in my opinion I prefer the show, because every time I watch the episodes I get attached to it, and like I just feel like it’s more me. The movie was alright but I still prefer the show to the movie. I just get the vibes while watching shadow hunters (show) I just wanna keep watching it, and begging them to make a season 4!

Oh please Clary's hair is CHRISTMAS RED it's described later on lady midnight. Lily and Jamie did a perfect job. Nor Rafael and Camille neither meliorn are in the first book they all show up in city of glass and city of fallen angels. Magnus and Alec are having their first kiss on the 3rd book. Also the demons are much better in the film.The book describes the demons much more disgusting than the show does.

for everyone saying that raphael was in the movie: the vampire in the movie was never adressed by a name. he looked like a leader, but he got killed. raphael survives till the very last book. even if he somehow survives in the movie as well, i repeat, he was an unnamed vampire, so you can't keep telling me he's raphael.

I read the whole book n I conclude the movie was the closest to the book thought it was only city of bones.. the t. v version for me, was nothing but pretty face n bad acting.. especially clare.. it, was just wrong just seeing her hair colour. Orange.. wtf.. n who can replace lily collines n Jamie bower. especially on the intensity of romance that they had... which includes all the other characters in the movie.. too bad there is no movie for the other books.. I miss them n I'm still hoping.

I will always love the movie since it inspired me to read the books, so here is my opinion (it's based on the acting skills and how much it's accurate to the books): 1. Clary - Movie. I didn't like show Clary in the first half of the first season. Lily really did Clary justice and i loved her acting. I especially loved the club scene from the movies. 2. Jace - Movie. It's like Jamie was made for Jace. When i was reading the books i was shook at how accurate he was. I LOVED the greenhouse scene, it was so accurate to the books and it was an amazing scene, you could really feel the chemistry between Jamie and Lily (probably because they were together irl) but overall i think movie Jace and Clary had better chemistry. 3. Izzy - Show. BUT remember that the movie only contained the first book, where Izzy is supposed to not like Clary. I also feel like we haven't seen much of the movie Izzy. Although Emeraude does not fit Izzys physical appearance, i think that's irrelevant and Emeraude is so freaking hot. 4. Alec - Show. The same applies for Izzy. I liked the movie actor too but we didn't get to know him that well. I don't even want to talk about Matthew i LOVE him. 5. Simon - I LOVED both actors like?? They were so good and did Simon justice. 6. Magnus - Show. BUT i always felt like the movie Magnus was more intimidating and powerful. I really love the movie Magnus too but we didn't get many scenes with him since it's only the first book. I LOVED Harry 7. Valentine - Both. 8. Luke - Both, but maybe i prefer the show Luke. 9. Jocelyn - Movie. Overall i do prefer the movie, i think it's more accurate to the first book. My favourite scene is definitely the club and the greenhouse scene. I think the shows first half of the first season wasn't good. It really took me patience to continue to watch it BUT i was impressed with how it got better. I legit cried in the end. And i freaking LOVED WILL TUDOR AND SEBASTIAN. His acting was so good I'm in love. I would really loved to see Raphael in the movie, it's sad they didn't include him.

well.. problem with the movie and advantage of the series: time. in a series you can divide it into different seasons so you can concentrate on main and more events. for a film you've also got the option to make more than one, but to keep the watchers concentrated its best to keep a movie exciting and with action, etc. for me the movie was definitely okay. and worth a shot if you haven't read the books in the first place. but now I definitely choose the series over the movie. the cast is better, for ex. the feelings and the atmosphere both between clary and jace and especially between Magnus and Alec are WAY BETTER in the series than they are in the movie..

As someone who read the whole book saga I choose without a second thought the movie, Jamie Campbell Bower was my vision of Jace and he certainly looked the part (If you don't believe me look for the graphics novels and then compare him to the one in the show, you will be disappointed) also Even though Lily Collins didn't have natural red hair I think she still owned Clary's role as well as Lena as Jocelyn and the rest, I think Jemima was a good Isabelle, she was stoic and somewhat cold but is just as Isabelle should be for in the books she didn't want or have good opinions of Clary at first.

Show in every single way, I’m a huge fan of the books and I liked the movie, but definitely the show makes everything better to me, Lily (Clary on the movie) are better than Kat (clary on the show) but then Kat got better with the time I liked her so much more in the season finale. And sorry but I can’t see the attractive on Jamie (Jace on the movie) to me he looks like a doll, and Jaces on the books were handsome like an angel but with masculinity. Matt and Harry are perfect, nobody can change my mind.

Movie wins in almost every comparison. I think I prefer tv series Malec, though I liked Alec's aggression toward Clary in the movie better; he's bottling so much up, seeing more volatility makes more sense to me. Jamie and Lily were the perfect Jace and Clary, and Lena nailed it as her mother, emoting much more in a good way.

Personal opinion: 1. Jamie and Lily had perfect chemistry for Clary and Jace. 2. Matt and Harry were perfect for Alec and Magnus and their chemistry as well is perfect 3. I think the beginning of the COB movie was more accurate to the books with the setting of the institute. 4. Jamie was the perfect casting for Jace. He has the sarcasm and personality of Jace but is also exactly what I imagine Jace to look like so in my opinion he’s the perfect person to play Jace. 5. The show made Jace and the Lightwoods seem a lot closer and more like family than in the first book/movie. So I’m the show the relationship between Alec and Jace was much stronger than in the movie. 6. Same can be said for Izzy and Clary. In the first book she is very cold towards Clary but the in the show Izzy seems more warm and nicer. Their relationship in the show very close versus the first book and movie. Overall I think the beginning half of the movie and the chemistry between Lily and Jamie made the movie better than the show but I liked the chemistry between Matt and Harry with Malec and how the show took its own direction with different plot points away from the books. But again I think the movie is more of what I imagined the books come to life would look like but I still liked the show and how it showed a different spin on the events in the book. I just think it wasn’t as grown up in my opinion if that makes sense? Like the props in some parts of the show just didn’t feel as real to me versus with some parts of the movie. But again, just my opinion from watching the movie, show, and reading the books. That being said, it’s not easy getting adaptations to be 100% accurate to the books but I would’ve loved to see more movies I personally liked the majority of it and the special affects and everything made the shadow world seem so real to me so I wished they would’ve gone ahead with a sequel but I know a lot of people hated it
