Ursa, I haven't seen a lot of your videos but form the few that I have seen, you just seem like a really nice person. It reminds me of watching a stampy cat video.
Absolutely see it. Hope any young civ players there may be have found their way here, though I wouldn't wish a life of civ addiction upon anyone except my friends.
@@2Links I'll take a civ addiction any day over the current gaming world that's usually $70 games you immediately have to buy a $30 battle pass every 2 months or so, plus being bombarded by packs and cosmetics the whole time you're playing.
Just wanted to say ursa - quality video, but I would argue the way you normally play civ Is the definition of optimal. You embody the spirit of the game - dealing with inconvenience, harsh rng, early war declarations, and then snatch victory from the Jaws of defeat. I think your opportunism and ingenuity is what makes you my undisputed king of civ. That's the reason i have binged your content long after I found everyone boring. You are closer to the real leaders depicted in the game than any optimiser - and the most entertaining by far.
Why thank you! Yes I do think my super power is adaptibility = ) That's why this guide was fun to make. Put that aside for now and make a game that just focuses on pure strategy!
Yeah and naw, maybe, he could have included the possible need for the additional slingers to deter the ai from early war. He did mention the slinger spam start tho.
Mirror was indeed used to simulate a start that would have as little randomness as possible!! It's a niche guide this one but I hope it helps to isolate and teach some important stuff
Ooh I love these overexplained videos! I totally agree that your biggest strength you bring to the table is your adaptability; that’s most on-display when you need 14 era score for a golden age and pull a rabbit out of your hat
Please do more like this! Really solid how-tos are incredibly useful for new players and more experienced players can benefit from a little refresher. I absolutely don't blame you for going Lady of the Reeds, but Divine Spark might have been the more "neutral" choice. Almost always available, not at all reliant on tile distribution, does also play into the science game. EDIT: Ursa does say he was avoiding the great people game. P.S Slobbery crumpet might be the worst combination of words I've heard in a long time!
I think having episode 1 of a series as a kind of guide to how to play that civ is a fantastic idea, and I hope to see you do this more (perhaps with every leader eventually).
As I watch your vids I am still amazed how you suddenly get 30+ yields in science or culture or early gold when it matters. Other than the gold, I truly don’t know how you do it. I do breakdown analysis on your vids to make sure you aren’t cheating, but I learn so much from doing so. I won my first diety game copying your Sweden start. Etemenaki and a crazy high food start. ( 29 pop on my capital at the end) I breezed through a tech shuffle science victory. Not even with the most science in game but abusing great people.
That's awesome, well done!!! My biggest tip is builders. It seems simple, but making sure you have a great economic base from improved tiles means that as the mid game rocks up, you'll have the capacity to start getting boosts to all sorts of yields. You'd be surprised with how much better a city with 3 lumber mills pops!
I love how Ursa now says some abhorrently goofy stuff in his videos unprompted and unwanted. Honestly it gets me every time, I didn't expect blud to talk about the chocolate cabinet.
Thank you for this! I have been wanting something like this for awhile as I've been dabling with deity and can never get anywhere close to 100 by 100! So thank you so much
Love the invitation to the new players **and** the Deity players at the end -- everyone can improve, here's the steps, try the experiment, here's how :)
"this is going to be a peaceful game" is the 7 most dangerous words a player can say going into a game. Exhibit A: I wanted to do a peaceful game (my last game was a huge dramatic ages domination run that I said F it & pivoted to launching the space dong towards the outer planets) so I started a rough rider Teddy game on a small highlands map with Civ Expanded. That was the first mistake. RR CE Teddy gives you a free melee unit every time you settle a city on your home continent. My home continent is absolutely massive and I had 8 cities by the classical era. Mistake #2: Akkad. Oh god I suzed Akkad almost instantly. This was a mandate from the universe. And Babylon settled in range of colosseum. He had to go. So he did when I threw a ton of man-at-arms at his cities. This did come back to bite me in the buns though. He claimed Donatello and I need Pizza Party.... :(
@@MrGrobi1966 Unfortunately I smoked him before he got a chance to build an art museum. I have taken the L on that one because of my greed (and I'm going to end the game with a ridiculous amount of cities by the end of this game).
Using Korea as your Civ for a 100 by 100 guide is a bit... cheeky. Might i suggest doing this with a civ that does not have a unique science district? Apart from that i really appreciate this guide and found the video quite entertaining as well, you silly little lettuce ;-)
Haha, thank you you jammy cake So Korea was picked literally because they are cheeky. I wanted to remove ALL randomness, including map spawn, when putting the guide together. Sure, it's a particular example - but there are some great things to learn here that can be repeated! I'll have to revisit with another civ but it's tough to create something that's repeatable on literally every map!
Of course you went for Lady of Reeds! Ursa, you and my friend are of the same mind. "Why not make the marshes good tiles." Now I know that this is a single-player instruction, but I typically play with a friend, I'll never get Lady of the Reeds. Not because I don't want to.
its not that great, its just a strong early game bonus that falls off hard in late game as you end up removing most marshes. In this game, reeds was prob not the best choice tbh - but it fit his goal which was strictly early game to get 100science by 100 turns. In a proper game, you would probably want to go for the more powerful late game scaling pantheon here. Settler, growth rate, or craftsmen
Never underestimate an early game advantage though. Sure it plays out worse long term - but that early benefit will snowball faster than you'd expect into something huge later
I always ponder the utility of building builders to chop versus building things directly, building them early versus building them later with 5 or 6 charges while using the early game to focus on industry.
Turns spent hard building something are turns spent not having the thing it gives (the yield, or GP points, what have you). Get it done fast, then you have the benefits of the new thing plus the flexibility to work on something else. I'll always take 15 extra turns of a new district over 15 turns of whatever yield the forested tile got me. Builders are always one of the most efficient things you can get, even without extra charges so waiting just slows you down.
it always depends. Some chops are worth waiting for, some are not. There is no 1 formula that works for every occasion. It just takes experience to know what is worth and what is not worth. Or some extensive math
I always find a chop to be worth it, especially when you have the relevant production boost card in your government. Depends also on your long term plans for a tile!
Good video. One point that is important to make, is that this map/game setup is super uncommon. I know you were trying to avoid randomness in your game for the purpose of the guide, but in doing so you have sort of represented a very rare situation. The vast majority of games are played on continents/pangea/highlands/wetlands type maps that are more action packed - more players closer to each other, with more encounters and more interactions. Thats the normal. The mirror map, while interesting for its uniqueness, is itself incredibly uncommon. Also most people play with at least 6 players, or more - making the game much much harder as the great people and wonders become much harder to secure. Also seonduck is pretty OP science civ and her campus design is quite unique .... I would like to see you attempt this guide playthrough for a strong scientific start and focus that uses a civ with regular campuses to demonstrate the build order and positioning process for a regular campus that every other civ will be using. On average against diety, players can expect to get early rushed and attacked, and that won't happen on mirror so its not the best representation. Ideally you'd play a map with players closer ( pangea map) and with at least 6 players, ideally 8. Also the 100science by turn 100 concept is really not something that a regular player should aim for at the expense of other things like culture and production/population or city spread. You made a big focus on that 100by 100 objective at the expense of your overall progress in the game and players attempting to get a diety win, shouldn't be doing those sacrificial plays for this 100by 100 goal. It may be that to make the best guide for a science start on pangea with 6-8 players, that you need to reroll a few games to get a proper average start, but I think that would be worth doing!
Don't confuse this guide for an overall good play guide for the reasons you've identified! I thought I'd explained enough but to reconfirm, this is a very particular guide showing off a particular style of play that is a good thing to learn to add to your overall arsenal. Map and play style was chosen specifically to eliminate randomness. Think of this not as a science victory guide - it's a sandbox to specifically teach 100 by 100 play, which if you master will feed back into your general gameplay = )
Aside: a nice balance mod (that everybody would hate): AI sells/buys luxuries at the same rate. No more 2gpt luxuries for you, no more 14gpt luxuries to sell. All 8gpt to buy/sell.
a fair and balanced trading mod would be great but the trading advantages that the player gets are usually compensation for the fact the AI starts with like 10 units. You would probably want to also find a mod that evens out the starting bonus the AI get over you on Diety.
I definitely called someone an absolute pickle on my drive into work this morning, I’ll try “utter melon” this evening if someone cuts me off on the way home 😂
Some details I would like to point out if possible: At 14:53 the reason he moves to the wood tile with the warrior it's not only because it will be a perfect match for when code of laws it's researched but also because you get a defense bonus from the terrain as he mentioned with the river, in case the outpost spawned anything and attacked, his warrior will have a penalty at defending for being on a floodplain tile + the difficulty penalty. It's things you should consider in higher difficulty settings! On prince and lower I think you should be more than fine! Also when Code Of Laws it's researched he chose God King, because he wants to start earning faith for the Pantheon! Most of time, if you don't find a relic, or have a faith yeield civ in the begining or a tile with faith you want to work, or even a first meet on a faith city state this will be your only hope to get a Pantheon! If you already have a source you might want to go for the production, depending on your strategy, but God King it's always a good choice!
"Perfection is something that will drive you crazy, don't seek it". - Wow, that really touches your soul. Whose quote is that, Shakespeare? - No, it's from a bear that plays an advanced strategic board game.
Seondeok was my first leader to win on deity with, I was lucky to be started on a long isolated peninsula, unluckily, Genghis was at the other end of that peninsula, I was able to get to space before they decided to go to way with me lol
£527 - The steps to getting 100 Science by turn 100: 1) Settle 25 cities and build +4 Seowons in every city 2) Build the University of Sankore 3) Profit
I know this is a super old video but Korea is my favorite civ, so I'll just ask here: I recently graduated from king to emperor difficulty. No matter what I do and how much I try diplomacy, I always get dragged into 1 or multiple wars around turn 50-60. It's not rare that I am fighting 2 or sometimes even 3 people at the same time. I learned to not die to those wars but it slows me down so much that me and the opponents I am fighting fall so far behind. Last attempt it took me until turn 170 just to catch up to the other AIs. On top of that I can't grab any wonders and getting more settlers out is difficult as I need every piece of production to defend :( I tried quite a few times now and I just can't manage to avoid war or get out of it fast enough.
Try coming over to the discord and asking there, we have a whole tutorial bit = ) Try keeping a slightly larger standing army. The more military score you have compared to your enemies the less likely they are to declare on you, and the more likely they are to peace out = )
i think the problem with no taking tribal village and exploring with a scout is that the game becomes a tad too boring. i know it's a strategy game but it's not like crusader kings where you only have to take a couple decisions and let the turn go by too see what events you get. no dissing you or anything, just pointing that one out.
My girlfriend doesn't really like chocolate, so I am good on that anyway. She is more into the salty stuff (crisps and such), which I don't really like. Icecream and cake is what we both like and what brings me into trouble occasionally for having no self control. :D I recently played a random game with no game modes, no city states (at all) and everything else turned off. I haven't done so in years and it was mad fun. I ended up with Kupe on a Terra map and plastered a whole continent with woods. :)
Good afternoon everyone, good afternoon Ursa! Experts, please help me understand the following question. I play Civ 6 on my iPad. And I just can’t understand what I need to do ,to change the original pantheons and beliefs. For example, a pantheon for a settler or builder, units do not appear if you select this pantheon. Or beliefs - for example, so that the holy sides would give the same production as their adjacency, at the moment I have +1% for each believer in the city. I would be grateful ,if you could help me understand how to change this, Thank you
Hello! The units not appearing sounds like a reinstall issue? But it looks like you haven't got the dlc - I think one of the dlcs changed how work ethic works?
RNG stands for random number generator! It's how most games deal with probability - if there is say a 30% chance for something to happen, the game will generate a number from 1 to 100 and then look to see if it's above or below that threshold. I think it's where it comes from! Essentially I'm just trying to create a game where chance has minimal effect = )
@@UrsaRyanAh, of course, because what you get from tribal villages, where stormed go etc etc is an element of random in the seed - even with the same map, you get a different result. Thank you! :-)
Practice on this sort of map a bit first - once you have it down, packed starts are a bit easier to manage. Remember, 5 slingers upgraded to archers will deal with all but the worst attacks = )
Seems like we are on the same schedule again, just finished a Korea game a few days ago. Had 260 science at turn 100 but played also with modded preserves which just are a bit overpowered. But as the AI uses them as well it's fine.
28:08 why you placed second seowon on right-up of mountain? A would place it right to the mountain (one tile below), because it is still +4, decent mines around, and most importantly, you don't have to buy any tiles. Where is compromises Ursa, opitimization, adaptation, saving money
I actually had a plan but I forgot to pin it! I wanted to keep the copper and wood to the right of it free because I had a small plan for a IZ set up later in the game I was thinking aqueduct onto the copper and a city below utter mellon on the tundra that would aqueduct onto the tundra sheep - that would leave a double IZ set up for the new city and capital between. I rarely pin that far ahead because strategics always ruin your day, but that's what I had in mind... and why I pushed the seowon up a little bit! The aqueduct was the main reason though. I suspected I might aqueduct on the copper tile from the capital so I wanted to leave the seowon out of that range
Your introduction introducing the lengthiness of your introductions is quite lengthy - perhaps consider putting a timestamp to the part where you explain the timestamps...
That's it! It's how most games deal with probibility - if there is say a 30% chance for something to happen, the game will generate a number from 1 to 100 and then look to see if it's above or below that threshold. I think it's where it comes from!
