FYI - CAP Regulation 39-1 dated 5 March 2020 allows both the V-neck and the athletic style undershirts to be worn under the shirt.

I'm a SM 1 year in and was recently promoted to 2nd Lt. Figured I should get my dress blues together so I found a cheap coat and bought the Vanguard kit. I am looking for info on how to do the "USAF ENLISTED-TO-OFFICER COAT CONVERSION." I'm pretty handy with needle and thread, and your videos have helped me a ton so far with hemming, tapes, and patches, etc. Thanks!

This was a very helpful video. My daughter joined, got her first promotion, order dress blues, then the world shut down. We are hoping to get the pants hemmed soon. You have provided me a ton of information as I research the possibility of volunteering for the CAP. I noticed in the pictures put online by the squadron I will be visiting on February 1 that all of the Senior Members are wearing the Corporate Work uniform (Blue golf shirt and grey cargo pants) except for one individual. I have two questions. First, I noticed the regs state that to wear the blues, you must meet the height and weight standards. I assume that is why many of the older Senior Members are wearing the corporate uniform. In your experience, is this common? Secondly, from what I read, dress shoes are to be worn with the cargo pants. Is this correct? In the photos, it seems everyone has tactical boots on with the cargo pants. Your insights are greatly appreciated. Keep up the energy and information flow! - Phil

Yes, the Corporate polo (Blue golf shirt and grey pants) are typical for senior members to wear during meetings. If they are to wear a dress uniform, there is a corporate white aviator shirt and gray slacks uniform that may be worn. It is true that to wear the USAF-style uniforms, members are required to meet the height/weight standards. Regarding footwear, members are expected to wear black sock and any plain black shoe, boot or combat boot are required with the corporate polo uniform. Secondly, from what I read, dress shoes are to be worn with the cargo pants. Black dress shoes are to be worn with the aviator shirt and slacks!

So I just got the class A Service Coat. I have about 13 ribbons. I don't have a rack that slopes like you showed so how should I condense them? Also, does the Officer rank go right on the seam of the shoulder on the Service Coat?

My first recommendation is to see if the unit has any available in their inventory available for use if there is a need. Most cadets just wear Class B, so the shirt stays would be the only item on the ones listed required if Class B is being worn. For cadets that plan to be in the program for several years, my recommendation is to wait on the service coat until they reach cadet officer. Cadet officers require USAF NCO-style coats because of the shoulder boards. If you would like to buy new items, some of them are available at Vanguard. The service coat is pretty pricey, so it's less expensive to obtain one from an Airman's Attic at a local USAF base (if there is one nearby). Otherwise, one can be purchased at a uniform shop- CAP members are allowed to buy uniform items from military bases.

The uniform may not have military creases. If you’re talking about ironing the shirt in general, the collar should be pressed down appropriately if a tie/tie tab is not being worn.

Where would you place a Rocketry Badge on the jacket? On the jacket pocket like you wear it on the blues shirt?

It depends on what is already on the uniform. The model rocketry badge should go over the nametag by 1/2 in if there is nothing above the nametag. If both spaces are filled above the nametag, then it would go 1 1/2 in under the ribbon rack on the left pocket.

If the entire blouse is too big, then you will need a smaller size for proper fitting sleeves. However, if the torso is good for your shirt, there isn't really anything you can do about the sleeves.

Maybe this is a stupid question but I am wearing my class A jacket for the first time this weekend. I will probably need to remove my jacket at times over the weekend. Does that mean that I need to have a second set of ribbons, name tag, and insignia epaulets on the blue shirt underneath my class A jacket? Also, can I wear the short sleeve shirt under the Class A jacket or do I need to get the long sleeve shirt?

For ribbons, you can wear them normally, short stacked, or not at all on your Class B shirt (under the coat). I personally have two name tags and two sets of insignia with one set of ribbons. I also have badges for ground team and air crew, which I have two sets of. You are required to wear ribbons on the Class A jacket. I normally wear a short-sleeve blues shirt under my service jacket. Just make sure you have a tie/tie tab when wearing your jacket (tie for males, and tie tab for females)

Hey - I just got my Mitchell and I don't know where the device for the flight cap that has the single circle goes. On yours it looks like it replaces the regular flight cap device. Is this right? 39-1 was not helpful. Thank you!

Class A AF-style blues can be worn whenever you are wearing dress uniform, but sometimes units provide guidance to wear Class B because of heat or a desire to have standardization. For example, members will wear corporate polo, white aviator shirt, Class B, and Class A at a wing conference, based on their personal preference. Most people will wear Class B for unit meetings. Color guard sometimes just wears Class B- you might be referring to Honor Guard regarding the Class A. Honor Guard has additional uniform items beyond the Class A coat that are worn when conducting presentations.

I was wondering the best practice for cleaning the blues uniform. There is a lot of dirt and sand where we have our meetings and i got some dirt in my blues. I am worried to do anything wrong to wreak them because it took many months to get correctly sized blues and I need to find a way to clean them so I can wear them to upcoming events. Thanks!

Hi! There should be tags inside of both the blouse and pants. It has all the instructions on how to wash. Another option is to handwash with soap and hang to dry if you aren't comfortable putting it in a machine.

My recommendation is to read the care instructions on the label inside the uniform, as all uniforms have different blends on materials. You can also use the dry cleaners if you want to be on the safe side.

I just got my Mitchell but my epaulettes for my class A blues don't have velcro. How do I fasten them on to the coat?

Do you have an NCO USAF-style blues coat? None will have velcro already on the uniform. The main problem cadet officers run into is if they have the officer coat, which prevents you from wearing the shoulder boards correctly. I personally used thread to sew the bottom velcro onto the shoulder, but some people just use the adhesive on the shoulder board.

The USAF-style Class A Blues coat cadet officers can wear is the same as the active duty USAF NCO coat. You need to make sure there are NOT epaulettes on the coat, as the cadet officer shoulder board doesn’t sit correctly on the shoulders of officer-style coats (with the epaulettes). The can be purchased new from uniform stores. CAP members are authorized to buy uniform items from the AAFES uniform shop on military bases. They can be pretty pricey brand new, so the cheaper option is to get one from a military base thrift shop, like an Airmen’s Attic- that’s how I got mine for free. Additionally, some squadrons have additional uniform items that may be available for use, but the Class A jackets are less common for units to have in their inventory. Hope that helps!

I am a CAC represenitive so I get to wear the dark green cord. do you know how to attach it using the clasps? i've looked everywhere that i can think of but 39-1 dosnt tell you how to put it on. also very nice shoes ma'am.

Yes, you have to use safety pins! There isn't really anything on your blouse to keep the cord in place, so safety pins is the way to attach it. You can do one or two under the epaulets and do some safety pins on the inside of the blouse to keep the cord in place if desired. Hope this helps!

You can. Some squadrons distribute the ribbons from their own supply, and they sometimes prefer to distribute ribbons at award and promotion nights. I recommend talking to someone in your chain of command for guidance on what your unit does!

Cadets can obtain a marksmanship badge, and all members can participate in search and rescue operations (called Emergency Services, aka ES). However, CAP does not have security forces as an option.

Unfortunately, no. It may only be worn with BDUs and Blue Field Uniforms until 15 June 2021. CAPR 39-1: 6.2.3. Beret. Navy blue. May be worn by other members when specifically authorized by wing or region supplement or additional NHQ directive or by National Blue Beret graduates. May only be worn with the BDU or Blue Field Uniform. Position headband straight across the forehead, one inch above the eyebrows. Drape the top over the right ear and the stiffener. Adjust ribbon for comfort, tie in a knot, and tuck inside or cut-off. Appropriate flight cap device will be worn unless worn due to Blue Beret attendance, in which case the member will wear the Blue Beret device. Wear of the blue beret issued at the Blue Beret special activity may be worn after the activity until 15 June 2021. After that time the beret issued at the activity will be worn only during the activity.

The coat can be a little pricey, and a tie/tie tab is required. There are specific items that are worn on the coat (such as the CAP or US on the collar, depending on if you are a cadet or senior member, and the cadet officer shoulder boards). While the coat looks great, it is not required, resulting in quite a few people not putting the pieces for together. In regard to when you are allowed to wear Class A: As cadets, members are always allowed to wear the jacket. As a senior members, members must meet USAF uniform weight standards.

If you are wearing a Class B long-sleeve or a Class A coat, then you are required to wear a tie tab. With short-sleeve shirts, the tie tab is optional. Most cadets don't wear a tie tab unless they have to! If you're just wearing a short-sleeve blues shirt, you're okay without a tie tab.

Hey I know this video is pretty old, but i was hoping to ask if i can be in the CAP program with epilepsy.I have not had any epileptic attacks in over a year. I also have been in CAP before i was diagnosed. I just dont know to be honest. Please respond.

CAP does not have restrictions on who can join the program. CAPR 36-1 (the Non-Discrimination Policy) states that "no member shall be excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or subjected to discrimination with respect to accessibility to any CAP program or activity on the basis of race, color, sex, age, religion (creed), national origin (ancestry), sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability (formerly handicap), marital status, military or veteran status. However, each case is subject to applicable qualifications and ability standards for the CAP program or activity concerned. Further, it is Civil Air Patrol policy that no applicant meeting CAP’s minimum age requirement will be denied membership in CAP on the basis of any of the foregoing characteristics." You are welcome to join the program again! If there are specific triggers that onset epileptic episodes, then I suggest talking to the leadership at your new unit to let them know and discuss steps on how to proceed if an epileptic episode does occur during a CAP activity.

I just got my dress blues uniform in the mail today and I am having trouble with how to correct do the belt, I am also having trouble with my cap and hot to wear it properly and what size it should be. BTW I am a cadet airman rn

Males have the belt buckle on the left of the gig line, and females have it on the right! Make sure you put the belt through all belt loops around the circumference of the pants. The female belt buckle is a little bit thinner than the male belt buckle. Does this help clarify?

I don’t know if you will see this but I am an officer and we just changed to winter so we need the fleece jacket. My mom bought the officer jacket and it was expensive. Is there any way to use the officer epaulettes that have the Velcro with the jacket even if it has those straps on the shoulders and the button? I hope that made sense. We just don’t want to have to buy another jacket because it was so expensive

Unfortunately, cadets should wear the enlisted AF-style blues jacket for the velcro piece to sit properly on the shoulder. A suggested solution is that the fabric epaulettes could be sewn down lightly by hand to see if the velcro ones can lay flat on it

Hap Arnold buttons for seniors only?

The buttons that come automatically on an USAF-style blues jacket are the Hap Arnold style with the wings. Members that meet that standards to wear USAF-style uniforms may wear these buttons. The ligne linked style of Hap Arnold buttons are for mess dress, and that is a uniform worn by senior members only.

Where does the NRA Marksmanship Badge go on the female blues shirt? 39-1 said it goes above the nametag but that seems a little strange.

My theory is that having the badges lower on the shirt might be uncomfortable for female members. That's also probably why there is some leniency with how high the nametag and ribbon rack are located. Additionally, CAPR 39-1 says the first and second badges are worn 1/2 in above the nametag, so you could put the STEM or Cyber badge there if you have them. Those two, the NRA Marksmanship, and Model Rocketry badges may not be worn above the ribbon rack because that is reserved for aviation and occupational badges.

The main reason to have an overblouse is to not tuck it! I recommend having a tuck-in blouse if you plan to tuck. Overblouses are cut and sewn differently, and you will find it pretty difficult to cleanly tuck in an overblouse.

This is probably a dumb question. I didn't really understand what you said about the ribbons. Did you mean that if I was a C/A1C I couldn't wear my curry achievement ribbon on my dress blues without my Arnold achievement ribbon?

Great question! To clarify, you can do all ribbons, your top cadet achievement ribbon (aka your Arnold achievement ribbon) and other ribbons like ENC, or no ribbons. Since COVID has prevented cadets from receiving ribbons from their units, as ribbons would ordinarily be handed out at promotion ceremonies in-person, you can wear what you have and update your uniform once you return to in-person activities. @@turtle-dove7111 While you aren't required to tuck in the laces of your low quarters, I actually prefer tucking them in. It looks cleaner, and it's harder for them to become untied!

Are the shoes worn with the skirt easier to shine?

It depends on the material! If they are the corfam, then they should not be shined. Corfams do scuff easier and scuffs don’t go away on them. Leather shines the easiest. Some plastic shoes don’t really shine.

I like wearing the service coat a little bit more since it feels more professional, and I like to not worry about my Blues shirt ballooning (becoming untucked and popping out from my slacks)

Wait until you're actually a member of the Civil Air Patrol before you start buying uniforms. I'm stuck with 2 Desert Marpart uniforms i can't ware seince the State Guard Maritime Regiment got deactivated in 2018 it was a Naval Component along with the Air Force Component . The only componet that exist now is the Army Component and there transitioning from UCP & OEFP to OCP .

Agree on corfams. Uncomfortable, and look at them wrong and they're unfixable once they're scratched up. Just get good leather and learn to spitshine.

I can't ware my Dress Blues because there Enlisted i need Officer 😆. There was some pretty derogatory terms for that Envelope Garrison Cover. Piss Cutter the other one we won't discuss Charlie Uniform November Tango Cap . That's your Mess Dress . The Bus Driver is your Whell Cap . Your Web Belt has to be cut to your waist length wich i hated because those belts cost $5 each time you gain a few pounds. The shoes are called Black Cadillacs. The Tie is called a Butlers bow . The shoulder boards are called Epulets.

My uncle got mad at me because i thought it was halriouse to crash the aircraft into the ground so i couldn't play on his simulator anymore 😂 He was trying to land a Appache on the deck of an Aircraft Carrier for like 6 months. I manged to land it on my 1st try 😁
