Tom Richey explains the difference between civil rights and civil liberties for students taking American Government courses and preparing for the AP US Government and Politics exam.
Civil rights and civil liberties are often used interchangeably when we discuss them, but the distinction is important for the AP Government exam. Civil liberties are a citizen's constitutional guarantees as an individual, including freedom of expression, self-defense, and protections against unreasonable searches and seizures. These guarantees are found in the Bill of Rights. Cases like Gideon v. Wainwright and Miranda v. Arizona are examples of civil liberties cases.
Civil rights issues involve a citizen's right to have the same opportunities as other citizens for education, employment, and housing regardless of their race, gender, or sexuality. Cases such as Brown v. Board and Regents v. Bakke are examples of cases dealing with civil rights, as they involve discrimination.
This is more than a crash course. It's a lesson taught by a classroom teacher.

Question: How do these laws apply to a customer when a sole proprietor deems their behavior unacceptable and refuses service. Aside from the obvious shoes and shirt required are there cases that might define these boundaries?
@tomrichey

That would strike me as a property rights issue on the part of the business owner as long as the refusal of service is due to someone’s behavior and not because of their demographics.

Even if (for example) the arbitrary deprivation of property is targeted based on race, that is still a civil liberties violation. The way I tend to think of it is that civil rights are about equality of opportunity and access to voting and that civil liberties are the “leave me alone” rights.

There is definitely some overlap. Thanks for the thoughtful analysis!

So the debate on abortion the woman’s side is a liberty and the unborn, if they had them it would be a right. The right to life

My class is doing a mock trial on if President Jackson violated states' rights in his dealings with South Carolina in the nullification crisis. I have to argue that he did not violate states rights help me with info please
@armorsmith43
@armorsmith43 5 лет назад
Esteeven Cepeda how much time do you have? I’d first start by just listing bullet points of the evidence against you: what did Jackson do during the crisis and what laws did he try to enforce. Then why might someone think that is a violation of states rights. Once you’ve listed that, you have a concrete target to attack. Side note: I assume that the debate centers around questions of what the law is and what a states rights are and not what the facts on the ground were of what Jackson actually did. That makes it more like a mock appellate case.

Most RU-vidrs set a video to post ahead of time. 1 am could be a random choice. Unless, of course, he is a night owl. Hoot Hoot
