The only bad part of civil war spiderman is that it lead to one more day. Plus all the things that happened during the wrap up of evolve or die kind of aren't really bought up alot if at all afterwards. IE the stingers and being able to have um more stickiness like where he stuck the girl to his back without a shirt
If i recal comic 616 spuderman doesnt have stingers like tobey maguire its spmething about being able to manipulate molecules around his skin or smth like that so he really van stick anywhere and everywhere like u cant remove his mask ubless he wants to as itd stick to his face.
@@Eduardo-ll7eg He got them at the end of the evolve or die story which was mixed with a number of different spiderman books at the time art wise (ie marvel knights, the amazing spiderman and regular spiderman) but they all should be the main line one that got the stingers
Personally I thought the unmasking fell flat, sure in a vacuum it’s a good moment for Peter and the tie in explore a lot of Peters big decision. But in context of the comic it made absolutely no sense, the Superhero registration act is explicitly stated that you only need to reveal your identity to the government, so Peter did not need to unmask himself in public. It was all Ironman pressuring him to do it. So both in and out of universe the whole thing was just a giant publicity stunt that unnecessarily made Peter and his family into targets for no reason.
@@tyuk5107 Not worth the sacrifice. It just reset spiderman into a bachelor until they put him back with MJ yet again which begs the question of why? As well as why such a long term circle jerk to change the status quo to then reestablish it? Its like just keep it that way or break it off permanently. But if you know the readers will riot then just make it permanent and dont be a coward and show characters growing up and maturing. Like I understand spiderman being introduced to every new generation but I'm tired of the constant rebooted movie series and the semi reboots in the comics. Like I'll read stand alone stories here and there but I wont stay interested if every 5 or 7 years theres a reset and suddenly all the changes whether good or bad are thrown out the window.
Civil War and the Superhuman Registration Act has always been such a cool thing to read about for me. From a meta standpoint, I like to compare it to how Japanese superhero societies are commonly depicted in manga. Whether it's One Punch Man or My Hero Academia, the heroes are already (for the most part) registered in the government. It's always intriguing to see how two different cultures interact with the problem of heroism differently.
Depends of the kinda of regulations, I don't like the hq because they don't debate what is this regulations specifically, it's just regulation bad or regulation good.
I love the irony in how MJ and Aunt May convince him that revealing his identity is the right and responsible thing to do, yet it's that unmasking that led to his marriage being retconned out of existence and him being perpetually stuck in a loop of becoming bankrupt. Irony may not be the right word, tho
@@lonewanderer1328 well... conflict is the core of fiction, and even though the idea of a world where Peter lives happily ever after without any problems may sound pleasing, it would be boring as hell and I doubt many people would be interested in reading it.
I feel like they kept the story close to Peter Parker because Peter Parker is the average man he’s not a billionaire or a WWII veteran or a super spy he’s just a kid from queens who got his powers by being in the wrong place at the wrong time but he does good anyways he’s a blue collar super hero
The part about Peter trying to reconcile his own thoughts with his idols almost broke me, it's all so well done in how this all affects him and you laid it out beautifully! Definitely not looking forward to what this lead to
This is much deeper than the movies. Everyone sided with Tony, not knowing the full context of the situation. That those who didn't sign up would end up in jail, indefinitely, without any trial or due process and die, even those "superheroes" who didn't have powers. The worst part is Tony KNEW the implications of this law and still went along with it.
Oh, when I said potentially controversial opinion, I meant in relation to the main Civil War event being overrated (because of Mark Millar's writing and structuring), especially in comparison. Odds are, I think the Spider-man Civil War tie-in issues were well-loved and were definitely a highlight for me too. And, yeah, for me a lot of Mark Millar's Marvel works have not aged well. I wish the Ultimates was as good as I had remembered, especially since the Ultimate character designs for the Avengers were great. Buuuut it's just kind of alright. At least Ultimate Spider-man is still amazing! Great new video, btw!
Everything leading up to OMD was absolutely brilliant... and then OMD happened... Also Ron Garney's work on this run made him one of my favourite Spider-Man artists of all time! Just look at what he did during Back in Black for instance! Back in Black is one of my fav stories in general haha
Oh, wow, someone actually mentioning Back in Black; I thought I was the only one who remembered that story, heh heh. But yeah, that was cool...and kinda shocking to see that Spider-Man could've killed Kingpin anytime he wanted over the years 'cause I was naively under the impression Fisk was a legitimate match for Webhead up until then.
It's been a while since a jump scare actually surprised me so props lmao And that knocking at 14:58 seriously had me confused for a minute, never watching your videos with headphones for the sake of my health lol great video
There have been plenty of Spider-Man who have worked with others. Take Spider-Man and his fantastic friends. Hell, look at most cartoons now. All these avengers and people exist in the world and although people cry about accuracy. Those same guys screeching about it say that they don’t like Toms first movies because they feel too small scale. Everyone just recites what they hear the majority shouting. When they say Peter is suppose to be a nerd or this super nice kid. that isn’t true, Peter was an doutsider who got bullied who when he received his power bullied his bullies. He would think to himself how he doesn’t care if random strangers die and all these assholeish things, but it all changed after his uncle died. It took him time to grow and even then he still fell back into those earlier mindsets because people don’t just change right away. Also him being quipy I’ve read that it’s because it helps him with his fear and maybe that’s true now, but in the comics he did it to fuck with his enemies. He literally talked shit to get them to become emotional and make mistakes. Everyone thinks they know Peter but there are so many variations that it doesn’t matter.
@@KrisTermincho ofc well first I would like to say that High School Spider-Man is absolutely nothing like the Raimi movies. But if we look past that Peter’s arc in both the early days and in the MCU is about a boy finally becoming a man. Peter in the comics has a lot of similarities to MCU Spider-Man except for the anger, but the tone they both share is the same. Both are kinda like sitcoms that take on humorous stories with sprinkles of serious moments. For example in issue 8, Peter and Flash get into an argument which leads to the teacher telling them to settle things in a boxing match which ends with Peter destroying Flash. As for civil war Peter (before Aunt May gets shot) sees Tony almost as a father because of all the kind things Tony has done for him up until that point. The only reason why MCU Spider-Man doesn’t betray Tony is because he had no idea what was really going on. MCU Spider-Man overall is about a teen struggling with confidence in himself learning that he has the power to surpass everyone. It is the superhero version of puberty. Honestly if you take Andrew’s characterization of Spider-Man and combine it with the arc of MCU Spider-Man you get the most accurate Spider-Man to date even surpassing PS4 or Spectacular. If I didn’t convince you I am sorry I recommend Implicitly Pretentious, he has a way better way of explaining everything.
Damn, J. Michael Straczynski knows his shit. I'm just getting into comics and, well, when I started reading the first issues of Spider-Man, it felt boring. I mean, it was funny and all, but when I was reading the text I was getting so damn bored because characters would just say stuff they did out loud, and that made me stop reading it. Then I saw your video on USM, and when I started it, I couldn't stop reading. I'm on issue 53 right now. That being said, where would you recommend starting to read the main universe of Spidey? By the way, I watched Owen Likes Comics video on the ultimate universe's downfall, and it's a damn shame that writers thought that being dark and edgy for the sake of being dark and edgy was more "grounded". Richard Parker literally summed up the whole ultimate universe, lmfao. Bendis had a good strategy. He made his ultimate run more grounded by getting a shitload of stuff on Peter, and instead of giving up, he made hope guide Peter to be strong. Genius.
Ultimate spiderman is great stick with it but if u want to read main universe spidey then read dan slotts run it is the absolute best. Not boring at all.
@@BowmansWorld Yeah, I was planning to finish USM first. But there aren't many issues, so I'm going to probably finish it pretty fast. Thanks and good luck.
@@Sagee_ Both are pretty short, but they're also the worst stories to come out of the comic. I'd recommend you check out the rest of Stan Lee's original run, the dialogue gets better as time goes on, but if you can't stick with it then JMS's run is also great and more modern.
I like how the whole story is about how you cant disobey the law. But then will get lines like "you cant put a nuke on house arrest". Like what some bullets going to do to a reality warper.
I'd watch the video about Speedball becoming Penance. He got a lot of crap for being edgy and emo, which is simply unjustified. Anytime a hero endures some tragedy it seems to just be labeled that way.
I agree. I recently watched the video on Speedball and I guess I can see where people are getting edgy and emo from, but I've always associated those phrases with teens who haven't actually gone through anything to make them like that. But for a hero like Speedball (for heroes in general) how else are you supposed to be after what you've done and been through?
Sometimes, a part of me wishes they kept major sequences like this in production, so even a younger generation could experience the story. Then I realize, without the rest of the saga building up the characters, with any point in the timeline being prioritized too greatly over the rest, it would lose some of its meaning.
One of major grip I have with the whole civil war storyline is how they put all these unregistered heroes into this basically inescapable prison without outside interference, yet haven’t also gone out to hunt for the criminals.
Yeah this logically should've lead to a decade-long age of supervillains with the superhero community being violently torn in two. Too bad logic is a rarity in comics.
The Civil War storyline made me so damn invested in Spider-Mans story to a degree of never before, I thought we were gonna see the beginning of a new era of comics and a new more mature era of Spider-Man. Then One More Day happened.
I love how this then leads to Spider-Man back in black. I remember reading the comic when I was younger. Watching Peter get violent trying to find out who did it. Then once he did he goes and fights Fisk in prison. Even gets naked at one point to show he doesn’t need the suit.
Really digging this channel. There’s no shortage of “dudes recapping the comics” videos, but the way you intercut your own jokes, opinions, personality and the way you pick and choose what to highlight from the story, it’s very refreshing. You clearly love the material but don’t worship it and know how to be critical and when to take the piss. Gonna go binge!
As someone who has never read the comics, I've been enjoying these Spidey videos immensely. That fourth wall break about MJ's arm is absolutely hilarious to me, and I'm like you, where I can't stand Dead Pool's style of doing it.
This channel is so fantastic. I occasionally go through bouts of Spider Man obsession and this channel helped prevent me from spending WAY too much money on more comics after NWH made my Spidey obsession tingle.
Alex, your channel is easily my favorite comic book related channel. You really feel different, fresh and passionate. Thanks for all the time and energy you put into your work :) I for one really appreciate it
I really like that you share your perspective on your favorite stories and I hope you continue to do more content like this whenever you feel like it.❤️
I've been looking for this type of video for so long, like you basically explain what the comic is and why it's good while also making jokes that are funny for people who both have and have not read the comics, keep it up dude!
Sometimes it feels like the entire Civil War was meant to f*ck Peter up, as the registration act was undone at the end of the The Dark Reign. Cap who was the main casualty of the event, got resurrected. And all the other heroes that died o were deeply affected, were b list heroes at best (so i mean who cares).
It's not referenced all that much either. Marvel's world seems to have amnesia or some shit seeing as how nobody really references anything unless it's like "I haven't seen you since the last issue". It sucks because there really isn't an event that really sticks.
@@hyperion3145 Thats not true. The big marvel events are referenced all the time. Both secret wars, the infinity trilogy, Galactus, genosha and the kree skrull war are brought up constantly. The issue with civil war specifically is that it’s a product of it’s time. Both in sense of its political themes and in how marvel’s editorial worked around that time. That’s why writers avoid it nowadays. Also the tony from civil war (and most of the 2000’s) basically “died” and the pre extremis tony is the one that kept on going.
Your youtube channel is exactly what I've been looking for in a channel all my life. Comics books? Spider-Man specifically? A calming voice? Great editing and humor? And a JMS enjoyer???? You, sir, are amazing.
The greatest piece of synergy within Marvel Comics is Civil War and Annihilation happening together. Just a moment of complete Hell broken loose across the entire universe.
So many comic channels feel like they’re either just recapping the stories from reading a wiki and never actually read the comic. I like how you’ve actually read the comics and are a fan, it really comes across as genuine love and interest. I also grew up reading DC and Marvel in this period. Have you ever read the Scarlet Spider run by Christos Gage I think. That and Superior Foes of Spider-Man are great spinoff books.
This might be a hot take, but I personally think that the tie-ins for Civil War were better than the main issues. Seeing all the interpersonal dynamics get brought to light, relationships change, and the consequences every action had was all a good read.
Really well put together, I like how you summarized or put the point across without diving so deep that it’s overwhelming or potentially robs the experience for people reading it for the first time. Really good stuff.
I got recommended your Ultimate Spider-Man video a few weeks ago and since then I've watched all your other videos, you're so well spoken in that chill, sit down and talk about what you like with friends since. Keep it up my guy. Also the Nakey Jakey song as an outro, hell yeah.
when i saw how many views this video had i was genuinely surprised on how low it was compared to how many I thought it mustve had. This was a great video to learn a little bit more spidey lore. Keep making videos like these they slap
Man, I just got into comics this year after binging the MCU and Civil War was the first big event I read, completely read. And while some of the smaller issues could've easily been ignored, I'm kinda glad I read most of the tie-ins because a lot of them add so much to the story.
I can't believe I found this channel a few days ago and kept rewatching your great vids, while being excited for a new one to come out. Great Vid! Can't wait to see more!
You deserve every ounce of love from your fans because your content is amazing. Love the editing (FNaF2 jumpscare got me), love your deep dives and your energy
The story is amazing. Although there are things I can nitpick here and there about this story, and where it eventually leads us to, the story for spider-man himself is amazing. It's a great demonstration of who is his as a character and where he stands on the right and wrong scale law vs morality wise. It encapsulates emotion and moral obligation to a wide level and I love it for that.
this is an excellent deep dive into the spider-man comics, and i enjoy your pacing, your sense of humour and the skill of the editing so many comics strips to showcase the points of the story.
I love seeing channels that have blown up and going back to watch videos from when they were smaller. It's a trip to think you haven't always had these subs, your videos are well made and there's nowhere to go but up :)
Dude your videos are great. Always needed good video essays about my favorite character of all time. Your vid’s fit that perfectly. Keep up the great video
You need to do a follow up talking about what happens inbetween this a O.M.D. because that has the best example of why you should fear Spider-Man, and it's fuckin great
It’s kind of ironic. At the start of the Civil War, Iron Man compromises on his beliefs to preserve the future, and Captain America stands his ground to protect people. Then at the end of the war, Captain America compromises his ideals to protect people and Iron Man stands his ground to protect the future. He still believes he did the right thing, but he secretly says that losing Cap made it not worth it. And then there’s Spider-Man. He trusts his father figure to take care of his family, and not betray his trust, so he compromises to lead by example and ensure a better future. But then Tony ropes him into betraying his friends and playing with things he doesn’t understand. Not only does his monster with Thor’s face kill a friend, but Tony treats good people like monsters in a cage. And he makes Peter complicit in all of this. And he is too stubborn to even apologize for it. Peter can’t stand it anymore. So he tells the truth and runs. And his family suffers for it. And when he has no one to help him when he needs it the most, he turns to Tony one last time. He even brings up how Tony was like a father to him, and that this was all his fault. And Tony still pushes him away because he’s afraid that everything he’s done will unravel if he admits he was wrong and people see it.
Ever since your Wall vid (and yes I did start out with your 55 damn minute video) I got hooked and backtracked to binge all your other vids immediately. Just wanted to say this video is incredible. Your presentation, humour and wholehearted passion radiates out from this l̶i̶k̶e̶ ̶s̶p̶e̶e̶d̶b̶a̶l̶l̶'̶s̶ ̶b̶l̶a̶s̶t̶ and is so utterly contagious. Sent this to all my friends and can't wait to say I've been here before your 100K and more :D
i love your sense of humor!! it's very unlike other channels talking about comics stuff and appreciate the inclusion of Jakie in the end, his music is soo good
One of my favorite Spider-Man stories is happy birthday, but i also love this story cause punisher saves him and also later on when aunt may gets shot and peter goes to fisk in the prison
This video reminded me of how amazing the civil war comic series was and how much of a tragedy it was that it got reduced to only one movie in the MCU.
you're the reason i started reading the ultimate comics and I'm loving it I'm on volume 4 also i loved the civil war comics but i have to revisit it's been almost a year been here for a few months last time i checked your channel was a week ago, you were at 2k sub sand now you're already at 6k HOOOOW i could barely get 200 subs on my channel.
Randomly stumbled across multiple videos of yours over the last year and I’m only now realizing they were all you! I love your work, hoping to see more from you!
They should't have done One More Day, at all... It'd be wise to see a mature Peter Parker deal with the death of a loved one and not just retcon decades of development.
Are you going to cover Back in Black? I really love when Spidey gets angry, it doesn’t happen that much anymore. But when he does, it gives us some great stories.
Im not really a comic book fan but your vids and the the way you talk about the stories you like kinda make me wanna start reading some lol This one was really good like the other ones so keep up the good job man and i really hope you keep growing an audience
My predictions for the next spidey film is; Ned becomes hobgoblin. -Since Peter is technically non existent, Neds only friend has ever been MJ. He has feelings for MJ as he doesn’t talk to anyone else. -Felicia Hardy introduced in college, but not yet as Black Cat -Pete gets venom suit -gains confidence. Pete and Mj start to rekindle, while being flirtatious with Felicia. -Ned gets jealous and doesn’t like Peter. -Ned has is now completely lonely as he feels he’s losing MJ. -somehow becomes Hobgoblin (don’t know how). Maybe left over goblin tech. -Pete and Ned fight. -Pete almost kills Ned with venom suit, and realises it’s turning him into something he’s not. -Takes suit off -maybe Ned flees with venom ooze attached.
A whole ass year has gone by and you still got me with that knocking sound effect near the end. You had me convinced someone was outside my window that's next to my desk despite the fact I'm on the second floor.
