My Great Grandmother , who lived in Lafayette, IN, was able to go through the train to see President Lincoln's body. She said their was another casket on board. She also commented that the President Lincoln's face and hands were very dark... probably the embalming of the day. I never knew who the second casket was until today.
The second casket was most likely his dead son, (William, 1862) who was removed from D.C. or thereabouts, and brought to Springfield with his father on the same train. IF my history is correct! The route up to the LS&MS railroad in Michigan City was via the (latter-day) Monon Route roughly north along current US 421. His train would have passed near enough to Lafayette Indiana for your relative to have gone to one of the many stops it made. There are historical markers along the remains of the Monon Route right-of-way in Northern Indiana indicating locations where the train stopped for viewing.
What a great loss when Lincoln was assassinated! We will never know how America would have changed or what path we would have taken if he had been allowed to live. Thank you SO much for this glimpse into his final days on America's soil!
Evee since I first studied him, 3rd grade history class, I believe, Mr Lincoln has been my hero. His life goes to prove that you can accomplish anything you set out to do. As said in "the hall of presidents" he may have been "the greatest president we have ever had. No matter what anyone may think or say about this great man, I still have a grand admiration for him, though the slaves were not freed until after his death. He was a great humanitarian!
I'm impressed - Nice presentation . Lots of great history, and no fluff! (Toward the end of May, 2022, I have to take a little business road trip from FL to ME, and plan on detouring to see it.)
Terrific unique video! I grew up in Illinois, big fan of Lincoln, have many books, been Springfield several times& took my kids there about 10yrs ago.Yet I knew little to nothing about this. Thanks for your hard work
I live in Maryland and hope to get to see this in person & film the experience this summer. Thank you for showing this.💖 While visiting Gettysburg standing on the rocks with other tourists (this was before cell phones) we heard drumming coming from the woods, then a group of Union dressed soldiers marched out, did some military maneuvers and went back marching into the woods and accoupple of minutes latter the drumming stopped. I went down & into the woods wanting to see if I could thank the reinactors but found none and thought that was strange. Back at the Visitor's Center some tourists that had stooding watching the soldiers perform thanked the people behind the counter and they wanted to meet the reinactors. The people behind the counter looked confused and took out some notebook, looked at it and stated there had NOT been any reinactors there that day. The tourists told them what they'd seen, so the folks behind the counter made some phone calls but stated once again that no reinactors were soposed to be there that day. What I think happened was for 15 or 20 minutes or so we tourists got to see some kind of rip in time or something, but the weird part was 'WE' saw the park as it was in our time, no waring going on, no camp sites ect. BUT I wonder what the sprites of the soldier's saw the land like, did 'they' see it from an 1860's time? NONE of the soldier's acknowledged we tourists, I dout they even saw us. I was I could have gotten it on film. I do have a few ghost pictures one day I'll put up on You Tube. And I had one strange but very cool encounter at the Jenny Wade house. The 1st picture I took came out like your normal tourist pictures would, you see the house as it stands today, the modern sgin, then the next few pictures show a more weathered looking home with ladies dressed in 1800's clothes sitting /standing in the doorway, & 1 other gropu of pictures of a man sitting in a rocking chair, wearing boots, brown pants, white long sleeved bed shirt with suspenders. I really remember him because he was looking right at my cammra and I KNOW he could see me. The stare was saying like; "Just who are you & what are 'you' doing on my land?" Please keep in mind that what I was seeing at the time were just your normal in my time era views, it wasn't till LATTER that I saw what the camma had actually taken. If you ever visit, just take LOTS OF PICTURES, YOU will never really know what you may capture. Ghosts CAN be seen in our day light times regardless of the ghost TV shows where you're lead on to believe they, the ghosts only show up in 'our' night time ....times. I think some 'ghosts' are maybe just caught in a loop of time, while other's can sometimes actually step into 'our' time frame. Sounds crazy maybe, but I think that's what happens. Some ghosts are attracted to the coloures your body's orer gives off. Who knows for sure but I know that ghosts exist. Take lots of pictures and you might get some sprites caught on film too. Good luck.
Thank you for telling your story! That must have been unnerving to have seen what you saw. My sister, our parents, and I travelled to Gettysburg from northwestern NJ. We drove around and looked at everything we could. I felt kind of weird walking in the field between the Southern-held Devil’s Den and the Northern-held area(cannot remember it’s name) that was up on top of rise. It was a feeling of being an easy target for both sides to fire upon me, even though it was 2013, not 150 years in the past.
The funeral train passed at the back of my property here in Saint Paris, Ohio, about 500 feet from my house. Heard stories of it from the granddaughter of the 12th child born in our house way back then. History here is that two people had the privilege to go lay a wreath in the car. One, a young lady was pregnant at the time and had a boy whom she named Abraham Lincoln, ( I forget the last name, might have been Morrow not sure ) the boy lived to be 12 years old and passed , and is buried in the local cemetery here. So now you know where Abraham Lincoln is buried, well least at least the Abraham Lincoln from Saint Paris, Ohio anyway.
That's a really cool story. Were there any pictures taken during that time??? They would be pretty cool to see. Not bcuz of the sadness of Lincoln's death. But, bcuz of the history factor & being that close to your property. Lincoln's always been a hero to me.
Thx for sharing this video adventure & your voice is very calming in describing all that was said. You have the perfect tone in your voice. My Dad was a Huge history buff & worked for the railroad for 40yrs. Lincoln has always been a an idol to me bcuz of my Dad. In my 11th grade history class, I did a several page essay report on Lincoln & my teacher said "he was very impressed when reading it, & I had captured Lincoln in a different way that he had never read before" & I was given an A+. ... & This teacher never hardly gave A's out, let alone an A+. In his class you really had to work hard. But, he did make learning fun by acting out things from history. He has always been one of my favorite teachers...& I've been out of school for 20+ years LOL ...Telling my age Almost LOL I look forward to more enjoyable videos.
Actually you do have to drive a train. ...it doesn't move itself changing tracks to go in a different direction or even as it curves around the tracks & different types of of land areas. ...the train has to be steered & maintained by the engineer at All Times. Trust me, I know this bcuz my Dad worked for the railroad for 40yrs & I've known a great many engineers & other team members who have positions to make sure that the trains make it from Point A to Point Z. Plus, when I was teenager, l had the chance to ride in the engines to experience this happening. ...I even got the opportunity to ride in the engines of an Amtrak as a young kid & be able to blow the horn before the railroad crossings as we were about to speed by. ...& it helps to get a privilege like that when your Dad worked for the railroad.
@@nancyposey9466 Excuse me! Lady, you need to do a little research! Locomotives do not have steering wheels. Trains only follow the tracks, to change tracks, switches are used (diverts the train onto another track). The engineer can only make the train go, and stop, that’s it!
Good video but in the future, you might want to hold your phone horizontally when shooting video for RU-vid. The human mind is conditioned to see things in the landscape format, and it will remove the ugly black bars from the sides of your video. They are disorienting.
56 years. I hope that was not a inordinately brief life for that time, and that President Lincoln experienced all that life had to offer. When we studied Lincoln in school, we were not as impressed as we should have been. Considering the mostly bad crop of Presidents since Dwight Eisenhower, especially on the GOP side. FDR was one of the few Presidents I admire in the same class as Lincoln.
here in australia they televised a funeral train from the usa in the 60's. i was very young but remember watching it and people lining up along the side of the tracks. i think it would have been bobby kennedy????
At the risk of being “that guy”- why is there a plaque with the Seal of the State of Delaware on the wall at 2:38. (Did not see it in the car walk-through)
Nice work. One thought... would a casket have been sealed well in 1865? I'm assuming none of the stops would have been open casket viewing... was it iced down, or somehow kept cold?
Good question! Lincoln had been embalmed in DC but there was no other preservation effort taken--like icing--and by the last few stops there was growing concern about his body's condition after all the exposure and time.
@@bluefoxy6478 I am guessing, you didn't get my meaning, so you can understand in more simpler terms, a waste of money. I will print in crayon for you next time.
@@lloydwalters4252 how was anyone sapposed to get a meaning from that? It's just a jumble of words with no context at all! Besides, it's an important part of the U.S's history, it may not mean much to you, but to many others it is an important piece.
