The 16th president of the United States death was a tragedy for a nation but how do you allow a million people the opportunity to mourn one of the most influential and iconic presidents the world had ever seen? we take a look at Lincolns last 1700 mile journey and how the public mourned and 150 years later, what is being done to bring the presidents last journey to a new generation.
please note - this video involves the topics of death and embalming and while not gory, does show president Lincoln lying in state as well as a picture of a body. if you are uncomfortable with this, please watch at your own discretion.

About the Nashville: Of the approximately 20 different locomotives that would carry assassinated President Lincoln home, the Nashville, which pulled the funeral consist over the Cleveland, Columbus & Cincinnati Railroad’s rails in Ohio, would become the most famous. Built by the Cuyahoga Steam Furnace Company in 1853. She was allocated to the Lincoln Train from Cleveland to Columbus. Running from midnight to 7:30 AM on April 29, 1865. The photo you have shows her at the Columbus engine house, having just come off the train. As far as we know, she was the only locomotive to carry the portrait of the slain President on her pilotbeam. She wasn't the only locomotive on that leg either. The Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad's ''Louisville'' built in 1856 by Cuyahoga was the pilot engine. (A pilot locomotive is a locomotive that run light ahead of a special train, in order to 'clear the way' and prepare those gathered for the train's arrival. Cleveland, Ohio's first big manufacturing plant was an iron works started by Charles Hoyt in 1827, in a swamp by the banks of the Cuyahoga River. Hoyt’s works were the first in the region to be powered by a stationary steam engine, and this was reflected in the company name-the Cuyahoga Steam Furnace Co. It didn’t mean the company built steam furnaces; it meant the company was powered by one. It's thought that The reason Nashville was chosen was that, being built by the local Cuyahoga Steam Furnace Company, it was a good representation of Ohio craftsmanship and thus appropriate for such a solemn duty. Cuyahoga only built 33 engines. The fancy “Louisville” was the eleventh engine built. The old“Nashville,” assigned to pull the Lincoln funeral train through Ohio, was number eighteen. All of Cuyahoga’s railroad customers were in Ohio or neighboring Midwest states. The Cuyahoga Steam Furnace Co. was financially embarrassed by the Panic of 1857. After it reorganized, the company decided to concentrate on steamship work and abandoned locomotive building. The Nashville remains on the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad's rosters until 1875. When she was marked "Disposed".

Lincoln's wife was not with him when he died. Due to the fact that Secretary of War Edwin Stanton ordered her out of the room, while her husband was making weak sounds and she couldn't handle his passing.
