Major General Nathaniel P. Banks, commander of the Department of the Gulf of Mexico during the Civil War, shares his journey from humble beginnings outside Boston to significant political and military roles. Raised in a poor family, Banks pursued self-education and became involved in theater, which boosted his confidence in public speaking. He worked in a linen factory, earning the nickname "Bobbin Boy." His political career began with the Massachusetts State Assembly, eventually becoming the Speaker of the House, and later, a congressman and governor. Banks switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party, becoming the first Republican Speaker of the House. During the Civil War, President Lincoln appointed him a major general to leverage his political influence for recruitment and support. Banks commanded the Department of Annapolis, handling secession riots in Maryland, and later led campaigns in the Shenandoah Valley against Stonewall Jackson. Despite facing military setbacks, he contributed to opening the Mississippi River for Union use. Banks' attempts to secure Texas for the Union were thwarted, leading to a failed Red River Campaign. Post-war, he helped draft Louisiana's new state constitution before resuming his political career, eventually retiring in poor health. He died in 1894 at the age of 78.
