Here's my thoughts on Civil War. Unfortunately I've been a bit under the weather this week. So the much of the body of this video is from my SXSW coverage last month.

well I do for the most part, but I don't think that our journalists are the 'hero's' of the movie. I think that (just like photojournalists and is mentioned in the movie) they just show you what's going on and not giving any opinion, but rather letting the viewer make on opinion about things. That's probably the reason why this movie doesn't try to make you pick a side. It's like this story is told by war journalists.

I'm hoping to go see it. I'm a fan of sci-fi (even though this is a dystopian film). A movie that doesn't give too much details away in the movie can be good. I'm torn on Civil War. It's well-acted, well-shot, and the final act is one hell of a setpiece. But the world inside lacked much detail regarding the wider geopolitical conflicts or objects of satire/ridicule. Still recommend, but I could have used a bit more.
@Tyler_W
@Tyler_W Месяц назад
I suppose whether or not this a problem entirely depends on the point of the story. What could be lerceived as a lack of proper development could, from a different perspective, not be the point of why the story is being told. My instinct is that if the wroter and director didn't feel that kind of exploration necessary to tell the story, then perhaps I need to consider that my focus is on the wrong thinvs before I chalk it up to being half baked.
@rickyrougs

@wilsonholts9991
@wilsonholts9991 Месяц назад
Exactly, in the middle of a war nobody cares about the wider geopolitical circumstances. Satire and ridicule are skill sets best used in peace time. I love that it left all that out and got to the bullets and bombs. Because if that's what shakes people awake to the reality of what war is then people will stop this loose talk about war. It's hell. I was in Iraq in 2004-2005. Trust me, it's hell.

@tatemaier9152
@tatemaier9152 Месяц назад
I think that was done purely intentional and was a genius choice by Alex Garland, let me explain. The only way to make this movie was to make a purely objective film focusing on the journalist aspect only where we really had no clue what was happening in the background of the war. We have no idea what the different "factions" wanted or why they succeeded which made us as an audience not pick a side but rather watch a film objectively that reflects a mirror at us to show why a civil war would be tragic and why we as U.S citizens should never want that.

well I think the reason she's in the movie is to serve as the opposite of Dunst's character. Dunst's character has been a photo journalist for quite some time and has seen a lot of terrible things, but Jessie has not yet. I really liked the way they changed the character Jessie over the course of the movie. It feels like Lee and Jessie has switched their views or at least changed their views to more of the other one.

There are several dialogue scenes that were as gut-wrenching as some of the actions scenes in my opinion. Just saw it this afternoon. Great performance from Kirsten Dunst and some others. I thought it was a great choice to remain apolitical, and the notion that Texas has joined forces with California makes it more of a dystopian fantasy. It was a little frustrating to not even provide context as to why everyone was fighting, but it still was a good movie. It was spectacular, and to the filmmakers' credit, the war sequences are the stuff of nightmares instead of sensational. Jesse Plemons is fantastic, and proves that he can do a lot, even in his uncredited cameo (although I obviously won't spoil the scene here!). Sure, there were some odd song choices and editing (looking at you, ending), but overall a fairly good film. Check out Cody Leach's review, he has many of the same thoughts that I did. I didn't LOVE it like so many others do, but it just might make it into my best of the year list (or an honorable mention). I should clarify that the hard-hitting, gruesome nature of the film made this a one-time watch for me. I have not only seen Dune 2 twice, but have pre-ordered the 4K. As bleak as THAT movie was, there was still an entertainment factor to it, and war films are not ones that I return to too many times. In summation, 3/4 stars but I'm not on cloud nine with a lot of other critics.

I did not get the peacenik vibe from the main characters or the film at all. I got "Peace sells, but war has a bigger payout." Wagner Moura is having a heyday with the whole thing. Spaeney looks at this as a career launching event and Dunst is like, "Another paycheck, but at least I don't have to fly this time." The only journo who finds this a travesty is the elderly NYT reporter. Now, the team isn't as predatory as the documentarians in "Cannibal Holocaust" who actually MAKE the conflict happen, but Civil War's characters are there to do their jobs. Nobody featured in this film seems to care one way or the other who wins or why. They aren't rooting for the Maoist New People's Army or the Latin-led Florida Alliance. We don't know what the Western Forces stand for, but it's hinted that it's an alliance of necessity. Some might find the movie too artsy-fartsy, but I didn't find it anti-war, at least not overtly.

as a person who watched this movie a hour ago i would like to make a LONG detailed review/comment while its fresh in my mind. personally i was expecting a Movie about modern warfare and personally thats what i wanted not, a lot of good war movies come out and this one is not AT ALL what i expected. now before i get into what i did and didnt like about this film i just wanna say it was a Good film and i think that the message it sent was far more real then anyone in the theater expected it was a window of possibility on what could happen and it could vary much happen and i feel like this movie was a warning to us all asking us, Do you really want this?.and that itself really thunderstruck me. now the cons. i personally thought jesse was a total piece of dogshit and she was a absolute dumbass but that isnt really a con its more of just a fact that we all already knew now i disliked the whole PRESS thing that was going on i thought it really was annoying and its not like we DONT HAVE FUDGING BODYCAMS but YOU KNOW those are not a damn thing just walk around cross fire and all that and dont expect to get shot. and a ABSOLUTE FACTOR why i disliked the film is why they did not explain why texas and californa were teaming up and that bugs me i totally understand what they were trying to go for but i would rather know and have a COMPLETE story and understand why because then u can feel some emotion for why they are fighting and not just feeling like its a pointless conflict and i feel like the conflict felt stupid and pointless because we didnt have a explanation thats a HUGE con for me and it just feels like a book with a whole in it. it feels like a PART 2 to a movie series but we didnt get the first part. Thats just my opinion not fact overall do i think u should see this film YES 100% it is a really good film i just wish the director did it a LIL diffrently thanks for reading. also one last thing i did not like how much they disrespected the US Military.

He uses the term 'taking sides' in this review. As near as I can tell 'one side' is talking about Civil War. Spend 20 mins on X and you'll bump into the phrase 20 times. Interestingly, their candidate has said there will be a bloodbath if he's not elected in this election. Has 'the other side' said anything like that??? As near as I can tell, one side is going to be upset if the other guy wins while the other side is threatening to overthrow the government if theirs is again defeated. Let's not even get going on the subject of disinformation and untruth, conspiracy theory, stockpiling of weapons, doomsday training etc etc etc. What is the Right worried about in turn, transgender people using the wrong bathroom? Can't we be done with playing things down the middle? Isn't 'the other side' just Law & Order and Rule of Law? How do you not choose that one if you're an American who loves his/her Country?

@SeanChandlerTalksAbout Месяц назад
You’re making my point. You just presented people you disagree with in the least generous and most extreme light, and you presented the side you agree with in the most generous manner possible. @@SeanChandlerTalksAbout There's no heat from 'the other side' That's my point. We're not threatening anyone. We would appreciate not being threatened. Creating a false equivalency that somehow this is a 50/50 scenario is ludicrous. I watched two Democratic Candidates for President who won the popular vote and narrowly lost the electoral vote utilize their legal options, and then concede, wish George W well and they both attended his inaugurations. While I disagreed with many policies and decisions W made, I would not question that he loves his Country, and saw the Presidency as a duty to it. In a less close election, 45 did his best to burn the Country down, did not attend the inauguration and still has not conceded while proffering conspiracy theories, fomenting divisiveness and pitting American against American. He has worked to push anyone out of his party and media circles that doesn't see this his way. None of this is normal behavior. C'mon man. Enough already. It's time for an honest look. This can't be fixed from the left. It requires leadership on the right to put the Country first, and return to speaking in respectful, factual terms.

@@walterhill9642 But there is heat from the other side. Just not the same way. If look at the extreme Trump people, they're insane. If you look at the extreme branch of BLM or antifa, they're insane. There's cities in liberal areas where they're defunding the police and not prosecuting low level crimes. Those are all things which make people on the right feel unsafe and like the left wants lawlessness. The same way the insane statements and actions of the Trump lunatics storming the capital and threatening violence make the left feel threatened. I don't think either side is doing a good job of policing their extremes or putting forward good candidates.
@walterhill9642
@walterhill9642 Месяц назад
@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout I would argue that if we focus on FACTS, what's making the right feel unsafe is Right Wing Propaganda. I'm a marketer by trade and I get complex marketing profiles by demographic. When you get to the various conservative voter demographics, what continues to be a thread in these profiles as the primary motivator is 'FEAR'. Sales techniques to this group are most effective when negative and threatening. This is actually a terrible revelation, and once you know it - it's all you see in conservative media, and republican politics. I have no idea how this gets fixed, as it becomes a feedback loop. While I agree that the hardcore members of any organization are unlikely to be very reasonable, I can't imagine that a reasonable person would think that ANTIFA or BLM pose real risks to the Nation. I particularly laugh at the ANTIFA stuff on Fox News, which I watch from time to time. The gyrations that the right goes through in presenting them as some organized army that's 'coming to get you' is laughable (but I'm sure, very effective for them). ANTIFA doesn't have leadership. They are decentralized. They are non-violent as a core tenet. They are quite literally protestors who show up at protests when their message boards fill up. Yes, if you get your news on ANTIFA from Fox News or NEWSMAX, you will be scared, that is their mission. If you look at what happened in Charlottesville. (I was there, btw). There is absolutely no comparison between the right and left on the aggression and violence during that time. Left and Middle were completely surrounded by otherwise normal looking white supremacists saying unrepeatable things and threatening in ways that would have made my Republican grandfather switch sides. You could also take a look at the Duran Report on comparing 'Far-Left and Far-Right Violence' if you want a more objective assessment. It looks like a roughly 15%-85% split when all is tallied. I would oppose anyone on the left who commits a violent act just as I would anyone on the right, but we're never going to solve anything with this 'all sides are equally responsible' horse crap. The right is being incited. That's not normal. As an aside, I appreciate this respectful exchange. More of this is what's needed if we're going to make any progress.

So I watched it yesterday in IMAX. It’s only the second movie I’ve seen this year I saw as a Day 1 behind Godzilla x Kong. I wouldn’t say I hated it like DisGrace Randolph did. But… this movie from a story standpoint and objective does have major problems. *SPOILERS* So the entire point of this movie is to kill the POTUS? And the Western Forces of California and Texas is never truly defined. Why did they break away from the other states to begin? Texas is a red state, btw. California has stayed liberal since Clinton in 1992. The first 30 minutes of it is very slow and doesn’t really give us any reason to care about the characters or their motives. Pacing only starts to pick up when we finally see Jesse Plemons’ character. Now Kirsten’s real life husband is only in the movie for like 5 minutes but he actually steals the show. My eyes were glued to the screen when he appeared and that scene with him was intense. “What kind of an American?” I don’t get how journalists/war photographers/press can go side by side while soldiers are killing innocent civilians and everybody in the White House. So when Nick Offerman’s POTUS gets capped at the end, I didn’t feel any emotion for it. Same with Kirsten’s character. Then I laughed at the ending similarly to after I saw the ending to Upgrade (2018). That’s it? A group shot of the WF smiling and standing over the POTUS? How can 2 states defeat a country with 48? So California and Texas have enough military strength to destroy Washington DC? Unarmed civilians getting slaughtered left and right. None of the motives makes any sense and similar to most MonsterVerse movies, there’s really no connection to any of the human characters. Didn’t care for the music choices either. I thought this movie would surprise me like The Negotiator (1998), Olympus Has Fallen (2013), and Ambulance (2022) did. I didn’t expect any of those three to be any good but they were better than what I expected. I was getting Olympus Has Fallen vibes from Civil War. But nah. Turned out confusing and very mid. No urge to rewatch it. 6.5/10

Saw it tonight and I’m Happy that it was Apolitical and portrayed journalism as it should be. Very interesting to me. It has a great premise that could easily be expanded. Instead of following journalists it could have followed one of the different factions. It could have followed civilians trying to survive the crossfire of war. It also could have followed the President and become a political thriller. So interesting. It is a true celebration of TRUE journalism. Many do risk their lives to report the dangerous things in the world. I love also that it wasn’t preachy. Really liked this.
