I think this is a wonderful short film and sums up reenactment very well. I am a CH to a Historical Society in Northern Ireland. We portray 22nd North Carolina Regiment, Company K. I recently did a piece for Ulster University on reenactment and stressed the effort put into an authentic portrayal. I love books and read primary sources. They are at the core of any reputable reenactment group, but books cannot show the smoke, let you hear the sounds of battle, or allow you to experience the taste black powder when biting a carriage too close to the charge. Reenactment has a place in telling the story of history. Keep up the good work!

Oscar Spence, that is awesome to hear. I’m in NC and used to reenact in the 21st NC.

Great piece, I agree with all of what Mr Hodge says about reenacting. I'm always impressed with the authenticity acheived by most participants in American Civil War reenactments. I live in the UK but I am a member of The 8th Virginia Infantry of Longstreet's Corps in the US. I attended the 150th Gettysburg and 150th Appomattox reenactments. It's true, you could not wish to meet a nicer bunch of folks anywhere. I was made very welcome and looked after. Out of reenacting I not only got the thrill of recreating historical events but I have ended up making some wonderful new friends in America, it doesn't get any better than that. Yes you're right, The Sharpsburg Cornfield reenactment looked something else! Chris Barlow

Couple days ago I finally finished reading "Confederates in the Attic" by Tony Horwitz. No doubt that the parts of book featuring Robert Lee Hodge are the most interesting. I don't know is he still doing his "Wargasms".

I'm 17 and would like to get into reenacting but I was wondering. Are there any dangers to the hobby I should know about?
@ThatReenactor
@ThatReenactor 8 лет назад
+Night Stalker935 the danger of reenacting would start at camp which would be like getting burn by the fire or getting hurt by equipment of tools. danger on the battlefield would be the cannons or the muskets but if you are with a good unit you should be fine.

Night Stalker935 U don't have worry about danger at all. The unit u are with will properly school in the manual arms and march in formation in company and Battlion drill. What side u choose ? Federal or Confederate? U can google for reeactment units in your state. This will be the best thing u ever do in your life,and when join a unit. Some of these guys will be freinds with u for the rest of your life. U learn so much and it is super rewarding. I have been a reeactor for 13 years, i have been with my unit for 9 years. Originally with a another unit for 3 years.

Check out a video game called 'War of Rights'. They have done something quite well recreating most all major battlefields.

would you consider video games better or worse visual learning experiences for this kind of stuff?

If you are talking about games like War of Rights or Verdun or other highly researched history based games I'd say its hard to compare them with reenacting. Games like these are a simpler way for people to experience the overall feel of the time period without spending massive sums of money, they also can simulate the stress and anxiety that reenacting never can. In Verdun, if you pop your head out of your trench you will likely be shot, in War of rights when you see the enemy line raise their guns, all you can do is wait and pray you aren't a target. With all that being said these games really can't compete with reenacting when it comes to immersion. They are still games, and many members of their communities treat them as such. In reenacting you'll see people far more dedicated to their roll and so will lead and react on the field as such. There is also no way for a game to really simulate the feel of actually moving in formation onto the field a firing off the first volley. To sum up, I'd say history based games are great due to their accessibility and ability to simulate stakes, but it can never be as rewarding as a good reenactment event.
