Dan, your bit about the posters for "Monkey Man"; "The First Omen"; "Scream 6" and all the others made by the same firm was so funny. Then you mentioned the Wahlberg & Sweeney posters looking at each other and I couldn't stop laughing. You are hilarious. Love your channel. Thank you!
@@mediaikonz Im a big A24 fan so I was surprised when I saw the trailer and didn't like it. But hearing what it is really about has got me interested to check it out
I didn't want it to be about democrats vs republicans or anything but it was a bit of a let down because it was centrist and apolitcal that it had nothing to say other than war is bad. We all already know that war is bad.
Dan doesn't know me if he thinks no one care about a chart with the most popular movie title that shared their name with a famous wrestler. Pretty much my favorite chart so far.
My favourite WWF wrestler growing up was Joey "Oppenheimer" Marcello. But these days Domingo "Look Who's Talking Too!" Ramirez is doing interesting things at AEW.
B- Cnemascore isn't surprising considering A24 marketed it as "White House Down" when it is a much slower, almost meditative but utterly terrifying art-house horror.
i dont think the movie is very slow at all. we barely got any of the road trip moments and every 10 minutes it switched to a different scene. christmas sniper, car jumping, jesse plemons, gas station, stadium camp, building shootout. i felt the movie was actually teetering on being exhausting with all these sequences back to back to back
I had to look it up and both White House Down as well as Olympus Has Fallen have A- Cinemascores. That's fascinating. I personally thought White House Down was goofy fun while Olympus Has Fallen was excessive violence porn. Neither has really stood the test of time over the last decade.
@@terrymcginnis01I think you also have to call Olympus Has Fallen goofy fun as well. When the secretary of state recited the pledge of allegiance while being dragged down the hallway everyone in our theater simultaneously giggled
Agree. I think the fundamental problem is that many audiences who came to see this one likely weren’t A24 fans so didn’t understand that they were never going to get an all out war movie. This movie is the movie I hoped it’d be but I can see how mainstream audiences would have misunderstood what they were gunna get.
Big recommendation for Gross Point Blank- funny action comedy with a terrific 80s soundtrack (My brother got the CD on import that's how much he loved it!)
Dan - I know you constantly have new movies to watch, but you owe it to yourself to circle back to watch Grosse Pointe Blank. It's a great movie that I think you'd really enjoy!
Double commenting to ask how have you never seen Grosse Pointe Blank!?!?!?!?! Please remedy this tragedy soon. Such a great movie with a killer (pun intended) soundtrack.
As someone who just came back from watching Civil War, this movie is frankly amazing. I saw a trailer when watching another movie and was hooked on the idea of watching journalist in a war zone and what that life is like and it didn’t disappoint.
If Dan can get an interview, I would be very intrigued to hear from a rep at Legendary Entertainment about movies geared towards both American and Chinese audiences, how the different stakeholders are managed, and thoughts about how Chinese movies might play stateside.
When Captain America kicked in the door of the Oval Office and declared "It's civil discoursin' time!", everyone in the theatre stood up and clapped and cheered. 🤪
You have never seen Grosse Pointe Blank?!? Please correct this omission! It is an excellent film! One of my all time favorites... Not that you know me. But it it really is a fantastic film.
Well played on the Wrestling List :) Interesting that Screen Engine/Comscore's PostTrak polled Civil War's attendees' political leanings & despite the movie being so deliberately non-partisan, it still didn't have Conservatives flocking to go see it! It had a very well utilised $50m production budget & $20m+ marketing budget, but all its audience score metrics like most of Alex Garland's movies aren't overly impressive with Ex Machina being the only one of the 4 movies he's both written & directed that both critics & audiences have loved! Its B- CinemaScore, 76% RT (3.9/5), 76% PostTrak, 6.3/10 Metacritic & 7.6/10 IMDB audience ratings are solid but not great overall in terms of its box office legs beyond its very good $25.7m Opening Wkend.
I look forward to your "retro review" of Grosse Pointe Blank! It's such a solid and nowadays underrated crime comedy. Also, agreed on Liar, Liar. PEAK Jim Carrey among a filmography of quality.
25:13 much like a good horror movie, the stupidity and nonsensical nature of these movies only works if you set up rules for the monster and how everything works
I don't know how it is in other countries, but Civil War opens one week later here in Sweden. So maybe Civil War wasn't out in many countries as the same opening weekend as America. So it's international numbers might get stronger if it opens this week in more countries
Civil War was so well shot. Any moving frame could've been a still photograph itself. I really enjoyed its somewhat misleading marketing. That European-directed distance from the 'why' of the war gave it a haunting similarity to some of the great American-made war films taking place overseas. The photojournalist angle was both inspiring and terrifying. All the cast gave great performances, too. Dunst looked like she hadn't slept in decades and in just a few scenes Nick Offerman really brought it. Jesse Plemons, of course, was great. The tension throughout this film was awesome. Hope more people contribute to its Box Office. Worth it.
New chart idea: compare post pandemic total box office in a bar graph every three months. It’s interesting to see how the box office is doing compared to the weekend average, but it’s not always easy to see how healthy the box office is year by year.
23:15 It did not open high enough to make the top 5, but the Brad Pitt and Morgan Freement movie Seven ($13m opening) was also the name of the notorious wresting gimick "Seven" for Dustin Rhodes. He is better known as Goldust and the older brother of new champion Cody Rhodes. Dustin infamously broke character seconds after debuting as Seven in the ring ,to trash the gimick and mention how stupid he looked in the costume !
Maybe you should make a graphic about the top grossing movies with Papyrus font in their movie title credits, i dont know like AVATAR THEY JUST CLICKED PAPYRUS AND GOT AWAY WITH IT
Does someone know why Dan suggests that a movie like Dune 2 (with a budget of 190 million) might have a 150 million budget for marketing, while for a movie like Guardians of the Galaxy 3 (with a budget of 250 million) he suggests marketing costs might be 100 million? I know marketing is always a big question mark for movies, but I don't understand these two different assumptions.
I would have found a chart of movies that featured at least one giant spider to be much more interesting than a chart of movies that share a name with a WWE/WWF wrestler, but that's just me. I think The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is #1 on that chart. Arachnophobia would be in there somewhere, I guess.
A line from the movie Civil War that I think epitomizes how it knew how people would react was the mention of “The Antifa massacre”. It gives no mention if antifa was the attacker, the victim, or a falsely labeled attacker or victim. But the people next to me definitely had immediate reactions to hearing the word “antifa”. It was an amazing anti war movie that shows a lot of the audience’s inability to discuss war without trying to find a moral high ground on either side. That said, the marketing wasn’t super honest to the tone of the movie. If I’m not mistaken, the Title Card changed the color of the font to the politically neutral Green in later trailers when I think it mighta been red before. But I could be mistaken.
That really is crazy. I haven‘t read all the reviews for 2016 Ghostbusters but I assume there was a lot of good will on the side of the critics. Ghostbusters 2 (which I personally like a lot) is not too far behind with a 56 score on metacritic. However, as with most movies from this time far fewer reviews are factored in which might skew the rating. The user score for both movies tells a different stroy: Ghostbusters 2 sits at a 7.0 rating compared to a measly 2.7 for the 2016 installment.
It's been very interesting to watch both outrage cultures try to appropriate the movie to confirm what they already projected onto the movie before even seeing it. It's sad people can't just watch and appreciate what a movie is and not what they want it to be.
Had quite the interesting weekend. Caught Civil War on Sunday, then Spider-Man on Monday. So it was a sort of Kirsten Dunst weekend. Also caught Sting on Monday. So I guess an Arachno-Monday with a side of Dunst. Really liked Civil War, and glad it did well this weekend, Here's hoping its profitable enough for A24 to go for some bigger swings. Also caught Arcadian, would not have been bad but one of the casualties of that apocalypse was camera tripods. Every shot was looked like it was done with a hand-held camera. It was just obnoxious.
Dan, thanks for another great video. Im curious for your next Charts to see if Spiderman (2002) will crack the Top Ten this week. Showings are selling out at a lower ticket price point. My theater had to add showings, and the hallway was like a mini Comic Con. Im so curious. See you next week.
Dan stop teasing us! And wow, "almost nobody cares about" We NEED...we WANT MORE zanny Speciality charts. I still want to know what animal movies grosses more cat movies (you already did) or dog movies. We need a chart for monkey movies. I have my money that of all the animal themed movies ,monkeys will be king! I loved the Wrestler themed breakdown. Of course we must have rules, I agree with your standard set.
There are what 5 horror films currently playing in the domestic market. They are cannibalizing each other which is why i think Sting didnt do too well with almost 1000 theatres. Also the wrestling chart is the kinda thing i love seeing in these vids. This show is a must watch each week for me thank you Dan.
Very happy for Kirsten Dunst. She went from a peppy teen star in Bring it On to becoming a very good actress into her 40’s. Most young actors especially young women don’t get that opportunity.
I think you misremember her youth career. Even at young age she starred in some ambitious stuff. From serious dramas like Virgin Suicides to indie off kilter comedies like my beloved Drop Dead Gorgeous, she has had a good taste (plus acting ability) and her career reflects that throughout the entire run.
A few movies didn’t perform well, like Drop Dead Gorgeous (which is indeed fantastic) and Marie Antoinette. But I’ve always rooted for her after Interview With The Vampire (and Power of the dog was a winner)
This weekend I saw La Chimera. Walked in completely blind-- this is the joy of my 52-weeks of movies project-- when I'm not interested in any of the big releases this week (I know I won't be able to stomach Civil War) I look a little deeper and take a shot with something I have no expectations of. And this week, it turned out to be one of my favorites so far this year.
@@charvolth It was fairly ambiguous. I interpreted it as Arthur dying in the cave-in and reuniting with Beniamina by following the red string into the light, but I suppose it could also be representing her spirit guiding him to the way out, an inversion of his dreams, where she is pulling him out into the sunlight and he is pulling her down into the underworld.
@@Qegixar Yeah, the red string leading him out would make for a nice way to come full circle. This reminder of her also saves him, though I was thinking, the guys he was dowsing for did have a steam shovel. Though they could have also bailed on him.
11:45 🤭😅🤣 So funny all those posters look the same, add to red/black color scheme list: Barbarian (2022) and Bardo (2022). ❤️🖤 You would think these designers know more colors… 🤔
I love that a spider horror film shares the program with the cult classic: Anaconda Arachnophobia is also one of those classic spider horror movies that make me smile. I hope Sting makes the Top 10, would love to see a spider horror movies chart 🕸️🕷️🕸️🕷️ (and no, even the terrible Spider-man movies cannot count as true horror) 😉
I don't usually comment on RU-vid videos, but been watching your videos since Screen Junkies time. Long term fan. BUT... You've never seen Gross Point Blank?!? Millenials everywhere cry out in Horror! 🤣😱🤣 Peak John Cusack!!
Some supplemental information about that WWE chart that absolutely no one is asking for: Here are all the other examples I could come up with that didn't make the top 5. The Hurricane (1999) started in limited release but made $10.5 million in it's wide opening weekend. Barbarian (2022) also had a $10.5 million opening. This one may be bending the rules, but The Road Warrior (1981) had a $2.5 million opening in America. And Repo Man (1984) only made $2.3 million in its entire run. Simon Miller and I are both very disappointed about that.
Shrek 2 opened in May. The flashback only covers the same weekend I’m currently covering, but in a different year. So it’s not a missed opportunity in that it’s not how the flashback segment works
As an Army vet, I found the film absurd. There was apparently no thought put into the military side of America (which is far more expansive than this movie suggested), there are specific protocol already in place for situations like this (no matter the side). There was apparently no thought into understanding the layout of the White House, bunkers, tunnels, secret airfield for planes... and even if no thought was put into research of the actual white house; how about just watching other movies involving the white house: White House Down, Olympus has Fallen, Vice, In the Line of Fire, Murder at 1600 hell DAVE, but they apparently didn't even do that either. 🤦🏽♂ It's bad enough the script had the ridiculous notion that a president at this stage of a Civil War would still be in the White House 🙄 If not realism, then at least make the White House portion exciting, and DIFFICULT for them to achieve. I'm sorry, I understand trying to be ambiguous but you can't do a film taking place in a simi-relatable world and don't explain all the sides of it. Let's keep the mystery to M. Night Shyamalan; not this topic. The few truly beautiful cinematic moments in this film was completely lost on a lazy script who spent so much time trying not to offend anyone, it ended up having nothing to say. War is bad. Great... we knew that. I wish this had a director that a background in cinematography. There's so much that can be seen through the camera lens of war correspondents- but this was just handled in a lazy, sloppy way visually and with the screenplay.
So Fun Fact from Hulk Hogan Himself in an interview on the 2003 Legends of Wrestling II video game he got the name Hulk from being "bigger than The Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno." Take that with a pitch of salt hogan is known to stretch the truth a bit -- but he is a humble man doesn't want to be known as the Greatest wrestler ever just the Babe Ruth or Muhammad Ali of wrestling
Sony never learn and I think the new Ghostbusters is paying the price. The previous film managed to avoid the Sony problem and tell a relatively small story with a lot of heart. Maybe they weren't watching it as closely after they got burned by Ghostbusters 2016 but now that it has some viability they can't help but trying to overload it with a bunch of different franchise directions instead of just telling another good story. They did it with Amazing Spider-man, Madame Web and now Ghostbusters.
You absolutely made my day with the WWE/WWF chart, especially since when you said Sting, I did straight away think of the wrestler (especially since he recently retired), Please do keep making these charts Dan, we see them, we acknowledge them and we do appreciate them!
I wonder what A24's breakeven requirements are. It's their best box office by far, but it's also a pretty huge budget for them (first-week gross was about half the production cost). I would guess that they make most of their money from the post-theater market.
I think you are underestimating Civil War, this will be a $100 million movie. The word of mouth will drive people to watch this over a number of weeks. This movie is a cinematic experience.
Thank you for the video. As always lots of box office crunch. Surprised to see Dune 2 Box office profitability..Sure there are other factors, but numbers can be deceiving
Guy Ritchie should slow down a little, I found The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare to be very dull and monotonous, sadly. I'll be curious to see the Cinemascore for it.
I thought the movie was fantastic. Not an unqualified triumph, but excellent in most respects. In particular, the sound design was amazing and the combat scenes felt more real and intimate than anything I've seen in a long time. Gun were dangerous, not toys, not cap-guns, not props. Violence felt actually dangerous, and it did feel like a reminder why we work so hard to avoid conflict. The only thing that bothered me was some of the needle drops, which felt out of place.
I think the fact Civil War had basically no political perspective has made it so divisive because people can project whatever they want onto it. EDIT: Typed this seconds before you said the same thing lol
Hi Dan! Thanks for all your work. Are you planning to see Sasquatch Sunset? I really enjoyed it and found it rose above the general things I heard. Hope to hear your thoughts about it.
23:17 OMG, I screamed I was expecting movies that either involve creatures that sting or the actor/singer Sting. Hearing pro wrestling trivia made my day 😂
Whaat? Something has divided people on the internet?? Shocking!! It's really a shame that people seem to be completely disunited on all the topics. When the world is torn by wars, we should strive to stand together, but we are far from it and there are no leaders that seem to be working on it to unite people, but rather everyone seems to continue the divide even more (this is not really about US specific, I am European, and I mean this in general).
