I'm not sure why the said Han solo died, all that happened to him was a lightsaber stab which is easily survivable and fell down into a bottomless pit, also easily survivable.
@@JediMasterDracusTwo: Palpatine and Maul. Maul’s hole did not explode. Palpatine’s did and he survived the hole exploding and then the entire space station exploding. Han’s hole didn’t explode but the entire planet did. He’s fine. The explosion just propelled him to Endor to nurse his wounds, where he grew a garden.
If you want to have some fun pull up old Collider Heroes with Jon Schnepp. RMB was always my favorite guest of his, really broadened my views, and vocabulary.
@@jonathanyaloussa he did an 8 hour EFAP about a year ago just talking about LOTR and got pretty wasted also, it was a great conversation. check it out if you haven't alreDY.
Sauron would surrender to Thanos when he sees his power, he would then slowly corrupt and seize thanos' will and dominate him so that the power belongs to him. He might even free Morgoth from his prison with that power.
Even loki, a complete amateur compared to Sauron deceived him for a time. Sauron may even get killed, but unless unless Thanos knows to destroy the ring, the ring would definitely consume him.
I remember reading an article thanking Russell Crowe for saving modern cinema when Gladiator came out. Thinking about the quality of movies back then compared to today's crap makes me sad.
I remember reading reviews when the first 'Jurassic Park' came out complaining about how the story and characters weren't very good compared to earlier Spielberg stuff. We were SO spoiled back then, and we didn't even know.
Everybody was so angry/unsatisfied at the abandoned city scenario giving Magneto an unfair advantage over Gandalf, it's like watching nerds in their natural habitat lol
Drinker lost it himself when he said no one could get any help but allowed Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to keep high tech gift suit from Tony Stark. As Gundam said: Suits don’t mean prime.
Lmao I know like the batman scenario or who else?... oh the bonds as well. Everyone kept going with their favorite rather then just admiting that they'd probably would of lost lol
The scene of Luke looking at the horizon with two suns made an 11 year old (me) want to get on a spaceship and go see what's out there. Acolyte's scenes make me question whether I feel like taking a dump or drinking a glass of water. They don't know what "sense of wonder" is even if it comes out of the screen and bites them on the nose.
I multitasked and drank some water while taking a dump. Nah, I'm jk. I wouldn't watch this trash even if I was 4 days constipated and I knew watching it would unclog the plumbing.
Thar binary sunset was the first time I realized films could tell a story through use of visuals alone. That scene is why I love film analysis the way I do.
Fun fact: prior to the Disney acquisition, they actually did a wookiee Jedi. Lowbacca, nephew of Chewbacca. George Lucas hated it so much that he declared that with the sole exception of Lowbacca, wookiees cannot be Jedi.
I think if they showed Kelnacca with a telepathic ability to communicate his intentions/motivation/will without English it would be really fucking cool. Unfortunately he just yells. Fucking dumb.
Sean Connery fell out of playing Bond because he didn't like the way the producers were screwing him on money and time. Daniel Craig just straight up didn't like playing Bond the character itself. Huge difference.
I wish there had been a similar situation after TLJ, problem is TLJ came out in the very early days of the culture wars so it easy for Disney to create a scapegoat of “just ignore the racist sexist haters blah blah blah.” 7 years later, more and more people are FINALLY catching on or are simply sick of it
"If you mean it gets better with age,it don't. If you mean it turns to vinegar,it does. Boxers don't have an Old Folks Day Butch." - Marcellus Wallace,to Butch - 'Pulp Fiction'
Connery fell out over Bond because he sued the studio over VHS sales. They put out the James Bond on home media, but none of the artists' contracts accounted for royalties for the new form of media and tried to shaft him. The suit took like ten years, and in that time he was blue-balled from the major studios and that's why he showed up in movies like the Highlander and Zardoz. Eventually, he got them to pay, and is attributed for the way contracts are now written for changing media and royalties.
I’d actually like to see Drinker Hosts: Ladies Night! Baggage Claim, Lauren Chen, DeepFocusLens and go buckwild with Chrissy Meyer talking about movies she’s never seen edit: scratch that, Chrissy’s Grace Randolph 😂😂😂
Drinker: "Yeah, I thought about the Patriot". As an American, I was laughing hysterically. Good jab brother. This is gonna be a great episode. Never a disappointment. Let's get to 200. Just wrapped up watching this epic, yall you gentlemen knocked it out of the park with this showcase guys. Keep it coming.
Batfleck would absolutely demolish Bale Batman. He’s bigger, stronger, has way more experience, more tech, and despite the appearance of his suit it’s fully bulletproof proof, Bale’s suit couldn’t even stop knives or dog bites.
I’m so curious how many people during that convention where Leslie and the others praised the acolyte, had changed their minds about it once watched. Seeing the footage of that huge room of people cheering and screaming with utter excitement confuses me. It was as if thousands of voices suddenly cried out in happiness, then suddenly silence.
Could you imagine being that guy in the superchats who JUST watched Gladiator, The Usual Suspects, and Silence of the Lambs for the first time? What is that guy's life like? He's probably been operating at an entirely different level of fulfillment than any normal person you see walking around for the past few weeks... Wow... I want to forget these movies so I can watch them all for the first time again.
After weeks, if not months of hype for the 100, this felt like a total let down. 0 hookers, 0 blow, 0 laws broken, what a waste of 100 years of buildup.
Just chiming in to the Furiosa vs Mad Max fight 2:27:29 Furiosa had HALF an arm as a handicap, as well as sporadic help from the girls who were ALL free to move around and knowledge of armaments hidden on her vehicle. In order for her to have somewhat of a decent fight against Max, Mad Max needed to be: A) Chained up B) Muzzled like a dog (granted the muzzle did save him from one face kick) C) Dying of dehydration D) Dying from sun stroke E) Weakened from having half his blood drained from his body F) Exhausted from hauling not only a car door along with him across the desert, but the grunt he was chained and hooked up to G) Literally had to fight while having a literal ball and chain attached to him, as well as people yanking on him periodically It was not a fair fight. If it was, Furiosa would've been bodied by Mad Max, even if he was being played by Tom Hardy.
Cappy estimated you save movie watchers about 2 billion dollars a year using rough back of the napkin math. Honestly, the way he explained it makes it seem reasonable and fair.
Tony Gilroy clearly knows how to make star wars. Dunno why lucasfilm isn’t begging that guy to take leadership over all production moving forward. Or check that, I do know why they aren’t doing that, but… it’s frustrating to say the least.
GANDALF WOULD WIN! 1. Gandalf is immortal 2. Gandalf never used his full power in Middle Earth because his mandate was to guide and influence people, not use his power
Congrats mates on the 100th year of Open Bar. Hard work, sweat, blood, tears, and a whole lot of drunken insanity have paved the way for us mere mortals to better understand the jungle that is modern Hollywoke. One of these days I’m going to take a day off from work just to have to privilege of hearing these guys Live.
I think where shows like Fallout are concerned, I reckon people are just relieved when a hyped show turns out not to be just dismal crap. Low expectations these days.
I like the deathmatch segments, such arguments are always fun when everyone agrees that it's just for fun and not a (slightly) more sophisticated "my dad can beat your dad" argument where nobody wants to "lose" because they're so invested in "their side". So here's my takes on a couple of the matchups. Sauron vs Thanos... I wouldn't necessarily count out Sauron that easily. Thanos may be all powerful with the completed gauntlet, but you have to remember that besides just having incredibly powerful magic, Sauron is a master manipulator. I'd even go so far as to say that's his main strength, even more than all the powerful magic he has. When he was still under Morgoth, he wasn't a battle wizard or a court magician or some other role focused on magic. He was Morgoth's spymaster. A sneaky guy dealing in lies and deceit, and even afterwards he kept that up pretty well (tricking the mortal races into forging the rings, corrupting Saruman, etc). He could probably talk Thanos into the classic trap for beating "almighty" villains: Make them go "You know what? I'm going to limit myself and beat you with only 10% of my power because you triggered my delusions of grandeur or something! Oh no, I am defeated! You tricked me! Curse yooooouuuuuu!" The Kirks would have been a lot better if they swapped the images. That way you would have Pine glancing over at Shatner, looking all worried with Shatner showing that confident look of "that's right. I AM the better Kirk." No other comments needed, the result was obvious from the start. On the Bonds: Drinker: "I don't want people to think I'm totally biased." Everyone else, in their heads: "Even though we all are, and everyone knows it." Also, my headcanon for Bond is exactly as Disparu suggested: They're different people going by the same name. "James Bond" is a codename, just like "007" is a title, and the various actors are just different agents given the same codename when they gain their 00 status and become 007. I know that the actual canon is supposed to be that James Bond is always James Bond, the same guy throughout it all, but to me it makes sense that "the legend of 007" is more important than the person himself. Like, with spies and subterfuge, the facade is just as important as the truth, so I'm just keeping that as my own headcanon while still acknowledging that yes, it does contradict actual canon, but it's just for fun anyway. The spiderman fight: I'm kind of questioning the ruling. Drinker DID say at the very start that characters get their "basic loadout", but does the Stark suit really count as "basic loadout"? On both Arnold and Willis: I feel like both Dutch and McClane have a big advantage in how much they can use their environment, which is a big part of the setting here, the abandoned city with cover and corners and stuff. That's straight up McClane "home turf advantage" and while Dutch does fight in the jungle, he is shown to be very good at improvising and using his environment to set traps and stuff by the end of the movie. Not to mention they did have claymores and such from the start (as shown with the scene about the predator being able to see their regular tripwires so they made a net using vines which, along with the mud scene, is a big turning point for Dutch becoming able to take on the Predator), so that would be part of the "basic loadout" and he wouldn't even have to spend an hour hammering pipes into crude spears or whatever. Also for the Arnold characters (and everyone else too, for that matter, but that's where the argument was made), "plot armor" is not actually a power inherent to characters, so it wouldn't help in this scenario. It's literally in the name, the armor is part of the plot. It's a meta-level protection against failure where their own skills wouldn't have saved them. Plot armor would be like Drinker tallying the votes and saying that votes against a certain character don't count "because this guy was supposed to win". Only if the character is stated, in lore, to have powers that distort reality around them to prevent them from losing, would plot armor be a trait that applies here. Gandalf vs Magneto. Something everyone is forgetting (if only Gary was still around for that round): LotR is more than just the movies, and only the "same character, different actors" round had the caveat that it had to be that specific portrayal of the character. All the other rounds are just "that character at their prime/peak condition". Gandalf (and Sauron for that matter) aren't just what you see in the Jackson trilogy. Gandalf is the setting equivalence of an angel, like literally "supernatural being serving directly under the creator of the universe", and since the rules said "peak condition" that would mean he doesn't have to hide his powerlevel like he constantly does in LotR and The Hobbit, acting like he is just some old man with special powers. That goes doubly so as the rules explicitly forbid outside interference (no calling in allies or other forms of extra support), meaning not only can Gandalf use his full power without worry, but he can also use the ring he's hiding since Sauron has no influence over/effect on this "ruined city arena" setting, and he is the only one Gandalf is really hiding the ring from (everyone else is just so Sauron doesn't find out from them), so that's a massive force multiplier on his already ridiculous powerlevel. Like, "old man with special powers" could be used to describe Magneto as well, but that was Gandalf's cover story to appear inconspicuous. His actual powerlevel is so great that "one of the most powerful wizards in existence" is a disguise meant to make him NOT STAND OUT compared to what he could actually do. Even Gandalf the White is still the "Congratulations, you made me use more than 1% of my power" meme because if he actually used his real powers, everyone would notice, especially Sauron, and that's the one thing that can't be allowed to happen. Gandalf should have won that, no contest, the characters weren't actually even closely matched to begin with. Oh and by the way, on the subject of "last words to each other" in the Acolyte. I have a minor correction to make. The last thing Mei said wasn't "I'll kill you", it was "What have YOU done?!". I know the writing is so deep it's hard to keep track of it all, though, so I don't blame you for that. ;)
Wow! I didn't expect THIS up so soon. That's not the usual way, but then again, it really isn't a *usual* episode!! Absolutely fantastic episode, completely living up to the number and incredible occasion.
The Acolyte is the result of reading too much fanfic. Not necessarily Star Wars fanfic, just fanfic in general where amateur writers spell out every emotion, every thought and every motivation a character has so female readers can squee or fuss over them.
Re: Shogun Seasons 2 and 3, I don't see how this works. Clavell's book was based on the rise of the Tokugawa (Toranaga in the book and show) shogunate. His book and the show ended with Tokugawa winning the Battle of Sekigahara. After that, there was basically 250 years of mostly peace in a feudal society that didn't evolve much, until Matthew Perry sailed into Tokyo's harbor with modern ships. There's no historical material for them to work with for a compelling story unless they completely re-write Japanese history (and I question their ability to write something that good when they don't have Clavell's work to build off of). Clavell didn't even revisit Toranaga after "Shogun"...his next book about Japan ("Gai-Jin") didn't take place until 250 years later, long after everyone in "Shogun" was dead. People keep looking for this "Game of Thrones-style" TV show without realizing that there aren't a lot of those kinds of sagas available to adapt, and most of them aren't going to be written as well as James Clavell or George R.R. Martin (who never even finished GoT) wrote their stories. Also, when "Game of Thrones" went beyond the material that Martin wrote, the wheels fell off really fast on that series as the quality fell apart...because the showrunners were good at adapting the novels, but they weren't on Martin's level as writers for creating new content. I don't see the "Shogun" showrunners being anywhere near as talented as Clavell, especially when they'd have to create an entirely brand new history (which even Clavell didn't do) and make it as intricate and compelling as "Shogun" was. It also took nine years for Clavell to write "Shogun" after his previous Asian Saga book ("Tai-Pan"), and it took the TV series folks five years to produce season 1...I don't see them getting a quality second season out in two or three years.
Hear me out. I am being Devil's Advocate for no reason but expecting good writing. Let's say that this is a long con. Mae's Sith master has changed plans. He told Mae that Chewy's Granddad was going to be dead before she got there. Bring a witness(sith) to witness your "conversion". She will get there just about the time the beavergerbil gets there. Tell the Jedi she has changed her mind. Have a couple of episodes where she convinces the Jedi she is on there side. The last episode..She turns on the Jedi and tries to kill Sol. A battle ensues. Osha is conflicted, but in the end joins Sol. Osha turns the battle, but Sol is killed and Mae is mortally wounded. a tearful death. The last scene is Osha training a class of Jedi kids with a pic of Sol on the wall. Just saying.
Gandalf at his full power potential is not something we have really seen on screen or on page. He specifically had restrictions placed on him when he came to Middle-Earth. We can't really account for all the things he could do, but Magneto doesn't come anywhere close to his level regardless
@@CyrodiilComeThanos is so boring when he has the infinity gauntlet. Only other cheat characters can win against someone with a cheat item like that. Sauron would stomp Thanos but he would lose to anyone with the gauntlet and not just Thanos with it.
Best Open Bar in months! Thanks to Mauler for starting the vs discussions - we need way more of that and less modern day bs which is frankly boring to even listen to these days. Funnily enough I've always considered John Matrix to be Dutch after he retired - the army tucked him away to help protect the secrets he now knew about aliens coming to Earth. And on that note, I say John would win because he has experience on his side AND he now has a daughter to fight for.
The thing about Han is that his number one priority has and always will be saving his own neck. He does overcome it but he has a cowardly streak where he will look for the chance to leg it back to the falcon and get the hell out of Dodge. Indy, while not looking to fight, will accept he needs to do what he must and has the determination to see it through no matter what. Han would always be on the lookout for an escape and I think that would be his downfall in this contest
There's no way Imhotep beats Gozer. It's basically a maxed stat necromancer vs a cosmic god. Gozer has millenia of experience over him. There's no way she doesn't know at least one alternative incantation that equals the book of the dead. Also, Imhotep's greatest fear is Brendan Frasier.
One thing I must mention about the idea that ‘someone must have said something when they decided to do X’… They only hire ‘yes’ people. People don’t dare question anything because they fear for their careers.
"... and I dont want to be trapped here in this lesbian, communist, space commune." Hahahahahahahaha 😂😂😂 I'll either get socially congratulated for this comment or RU-vid will unconstitutionally delete it. Who knows these days
> None of the writing makes any sense whatsoever and in some cases directly contradicts itself. >Although we initially included coherent writing, sadly we had to cut that piece due to budgetary reasons.
3:01:35 Gandalf can't technically die because he is theologically an Angel serving God ("Eru Illuvitar" is merely God's name in Elvish) He was reincarnated specifically because God needed him to complete his mission in the world of creation
Drinker and mauler: after listening to the discussions had over the past two open bars i really felt like Star Wars was no longer for me, and that was a sad realization. I talked with my dad about the acolyte, and we talked about how my son (3 months) won’t have the same legacy of Star Wars growing up that I did. My dad said, “sometimes after a certain point there’s no going back home”. I reflected on that, and I found one course of action that has reignited my love for Star Wars. That is I used my monthly audible credit to get Heir to the empire by Timothy Zahn (the original series). I am just going to dive back into legends and build up an incredible catalog of audio and physical books for my son to enjoy as he grows up! In the process it does in a sense let me enjoy many of the stories of my childhood and see what Star Wars is meant to be! Anyway thank you, as without these discussions I would not have stopped and thought about it as much! Congrats on 100 episodes.
There's an important detail everyone seems to have missed about the master wookie: as far as the Jedi should know given the information they had, master wookie could even be dead for a long time them. After all, they lost contact with him for something about a year. We, the audience, know he's alive because Mae said, but the Jedi don't.
For Rey vs Ahsoka, I feel like it would come down to who is in charge of star wars when the fight takes place. If KK is calling the shots then Rey and if Filoni then Ahsoka
This episode of the podcast with the guys rotating in and out, this definitely gave me the closest sense of what it was like to me growing up in an actual bar that my dad owned when I was a kid and seeing all the regulars. Great show, guys!
Man open bar has made me feel sane in these silly times. Pop culture is currently hyper lame and it's a game of Soviet clap-until-everyone-stops. Everything is great. Everything is terrible.
Drinker contradicted his own rules. Both characters in their prime with no help from anyone…except Tom Holland can have a high tech gift suit from Tony Stark. Agree with Gundam: Their suits are not their prime. Rigged.
Out of everything disney did to starwars I am most pissed off about how our favorite og characters ended. They wasted them and now they are too old, dead, or too political to redeem themselves.
I like him for 3/5 movies. I see why ppl get soured on him, Spectre and Die Another Die really make him into a deconstructed version. I also think a lot of the Fellowship would hands down rather seen a Henry Cavil Bond reboot post Skyfall.
@@ferrarriohh yeah I wasn't a huge fan of the most recent Bond movie, it didn't feel like Bond at all to me. But Casino Royale is objectively my favorite Bond and despite what Mauler says I don't think that movie works without Daniel Craig's darker, moodier take on the character.
