Carthage (/ˈkɑːrθədʒ/; Punic: 𐤒𐤓𐤕•𐤇𐤃𐤔𐤕, romanized: Qart-ḥadašt, lit. 'New City'; Latin: Carthāgō) was a Phoenician state that included, during the 7th-3rd centuries BC, its wider sphere of influence known as the Carthaginian Empire. The empire extended over much of the coast of Northwest Africa as well as encompassing substantial parts of coastal Iberia and the islands of the western Mediterranean Sea.
Phoenicians founded Carthage in 814 BC. Initially a dependency of the Phoenician state of Tyre, Carthage gained independence around 650 BC and established its political hegemony over other Phoenician settlements throughout the western Mediterranean; this lasted until the end of the 3rd century BC. At the height of the city's prominence, it served as a major hub of trade, with trading stations extending throughout the region.
For much of its history, Carthage was on hostile terms with the Greeks in Sicily and with the Roman Republic; tensions led to a series of armed conflicts known as the Sicilian Wars (c. 600-265 BC) and the Punic Wars (264-146 BC) respectively. The city also had to deal with potentially hostile Berbers, the indigenous inhabitants of the area where Carthage was built. In 146 BC, after the third and final Punic War, Roman forces destroyed Carthage then redesigned and occupied the site of the city. Nearly all of the other Phoenician city-states and former Carthaginian dependencies subsequently fell into Roman hands.

After le destruction of Carthage, punics still lives in some other towns. But, many invasions in north Africa transformed this nation mainly the Arab invasion that destroyed almost classical towns and cultures. Although, many Tunisians are descendants from punics, they are culturally very different from these glorious days, very few of them are really conscious of their past and willing to recover this old civilization and culture
@granda2126
@granda2126 4 года назад
@@hedikamoun4407 i think all of them are aware of it!! but we are talking about ancient kingdoms, Kairouan was even more flourished than Carthage in the 8th century !! people say Tunisians are not,well studies proved it's impossible that all Carthaginians perished!! hundreds fled the carnage!! genetic studies show they still have few pho genes with less than 2% for 2000 years that a lot btw especially with a region that had different races and empires interacting with it!! also Carthage had already it's glory!! Egypt is no way near the Extremely civilized Parahons era !! or Irak to Babylon, or let's not even talk about Greece and it's an ancient extremely wonderful version of the past! not just Tunisians can claim as descendants of Carthage but also Lybians and Algerians!! new studies show that even modern-day people in some regions in Portugal have PH genes with a small degree !! also Carthage survived as a mighty republic/empire for 700 years that's more than the double of the age of the united states!! that's all every kingdom will fall and rise some time in History!! if Carthage will rise again ???!! i dunno maybe in some decades or even a century who knows, in the 19/18th century nobody knew that China will rise to be the next global power in the world and that Europe will fall **according to speculations in the next 4/5 decades no European country will be an influential country in the world!! politically or even economically it will be only Asians and the US. **also Arabs destroyed the Roman version of Carthage, not punic one, that's a mistake u wrote!! to put Kairouan as capital instead, but Rome destroyed the punic one!!
@hedikamoun4407
@hedikamoun4407 4 года назад
@@granda2126 unfortunately arabs destroyed the punic heritage too, may be you don't know that Roman and Carthaginian civilization are very close in many fields, and that Roman's took a lot a technologies from Carthaginian in construction, navigation and agriculture. Those punic heritages were totally destroyed by arabs, there's very few trace of them today. Kairouan as well as Tunis, Sfax, Sousse are shameful cities because they were built by the worked stone of ancient civilized cities that were founded by punics and romans. I am not fooling you, all the historian specialists know this fact
@granda2126
@granda2126 4 года назад
@@hedikamoun4407 I have a small modest idea I studied History in university and I'm very fond of the north African ancient History!! the heritage of books, etc a lot of studies showed that actually, Numidians stole it during the carnage!! and that Rome didn't really destroy it since they were people fond of culture and literature at the time of the 3rd punic war!! yes they are built with ruins of Carthage but Roman ones, you have your own opinion to call it shameful well I respect that but I don't see it that way!! but indeed the mosque of Kairouan that is considered the first in Africa, the stones are brought from Carthage also the Muslims destroyed the city because Carthage was not strong enough but prosperous, so the European enemies won't come and use it, they completely destroyed it and made a new capital at the center!! about the Romans took the tech, etc well yea!!! it's unrelated to the topic but it's true mainly during the 1st punic war they were able to win only when they literally copied the Carthaginian navy since at that time it was the mightest in that region!! but Arabs destroyed punic one, that's kinda hard to digest my friend!! punic Carthage was destroyed and left abandoned for more than a century before Julius took the decision to rebuild it, even the port is different in shape, etc!: but PERHAPS, some parts were left!! it is not proven anyway!! a lot of resources were stolen by Numidians * according to some scholars * or destroyed!! a huge part of the History will be uncovered till the end of times anyway!! unless new findings will be explored

@@granda2126 there's a lot of cities that were not destroyed by romans that's the fact. For exemple, Utica the oldest phoenician city in tunisia was not touched at all by the romans but destroyed by arabs, it was very populous just before the desastrous coming of Arabs. Another exemple, thanae was a huge city comparable to Carthage, it's located close to the current Sfax second city of tunisia and founded by phoenician, it was not touched by Romans. Tcapae was a big city close to the current city of Gabes, same destiny totally destroyed to the ground by arabs..too many cities and villages was destroyed by arabs, I invite you to begin to read mo9adimat ibn khaldun the father of sociology he detailled how arabs destroyed civilization from current Tunisia and Algeria, he considered arabs of that time as the perfect example of destructive society..I noticed that you are not conscious that roman constructions are largely similar to punic ones doctor fantar a great historian proved that

Well considering that the phoenicians were a minority among the people who they integrated and culturally influenced to create the carthage it's not really surprising that most carthaginians have ancient libyan origins. But the fact that they had a phoenician culture is why people tend to associate everything the carthaginian did with the phoenicians. I find it really annoying because they were only a majority in the levant.

Carthage was a Phoenician trade city founded when the city of Tyre began exporting good and established colonies across the Mediterranean to help with this trade. After the fall of the Phoenician homeland, Carthage began expanding, becoming a sort of confederation of the Phoenician city states across Northern Africa, becoming a major trading power in Europe. Carthaginians both spoke Phoenician, had lighter skin than Africans in the region, worshipped gods from the Phoenician homeland and were called Punic by the Romans, the Roman word for Phoenicians.

@someone-wh2rb In that case, who would explore the americas first? The Carthaginians or Nordic Vikings? Also, the Abrahamic reglions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam would gain more recognition in Palestine but would not have been very widespread.

who knows? maybe a celtic or gaullic nations carves out its own path in iberia, gaul or the isles? italia wouldve never become prosperous, which would leave the middle east as the source of great powers in the world. maybe the egyptians or seleucids are able to win over one another, in which case, there is a chance for christianity to rise in the near east. the arab invasions wouldnt have been as succesful, confining islam to arabia. the hunnic invasions would be devestating for the greek world, as would the mongols. a silk road would still exist, but it wouldnt be nearly as prosperous. we would probably be behind on technology by a few centuries and we wouldnt use the latin alphabet. all in all a very interesting scenario@@SteveInLava

this could been the musical analogue of what the people of Cartaghe felt when seeing the rare sight , of the merchant traffic in the generous harbror of ther capital city being held asside...as what was dreadnought ships at least compared to what the romans fielded....leaving the inner wall secured and roofed agenst the elements military harbror , loaded with soldiers and supplies to fight Rome...knowing not all would return but that they may return with victory , if only for one decision... they might have hade done that and Romes expansion would been forced to become lees brute force.....makes me curious on what sort of music one would make for the epic last stand of ther people and ther city when the romans fear of ther tanacity to bounce back through peacefull trade forced the carthagians hands..hmm ,also makes you curious how history might have shaped if they instead of standing and fighting would have suppriced the romans by outright giving the nubians ther coastal citadel city , in return for aid...with an exodus... across the desserts.

Hello dear Phoenician brothers and sisters....... Speaking with you all from a village called Zama..... It's near the city of Jableh in Lattakia province in Syria........ And yes the Zama in Tunisia is named after this village here...... When you speak of Tunisia having nothing to do with the east Mediterranean it seems to me that Rome was successful in adding salt to the soil of Carthage meaning that they defeated the civilisation that gave the world the first Alphabet (Ugarit) -the Carthaginian did use it - the first musical note (Ugarit) -Adet Yam aka the lady of the sea that the Carthaginian did play in the Temples - the first domesticated olive tree (Aleppo) -the Carthaginian did plant and harvest - the first bar of soap (Aleppo) -the Carthaginian did use in their famous private baths - the first ship (Tripoli) -the same that was used to found Tripoli of the West then Carthage itself - the first orange tree (Yafa) -the Carthaginian did plant and harvest - ...... You can live whatever life you want and believe whatever you want....... It's just sad that once upon a time you could go to whatever port on the Mediterranean: speak the same language, pray to the same gods, smell the same as everyone around you, drink the same wine and eat the same food..... And now we look at the map and we have borders with names we never knew and national feelings we never had.......
