I talk about the troubles with the CJ5 bumper and what I may do about it soon. I also talk a good bit about WWI and other history topics as well! I hope you enjoy!

I realize you shot this a few weeks ago, so you might have already finished it, but if you haven't, I'd suggest tying that bumper/bracket to the frame instead of the rear panel. You can buy frame mounted trailer hitches, I'm not suggesting you do that, but you can get an idea of what the mounting points to the frame would look like. Weld that angle iron directly to the brackets you create. I think that would be a lot easier than what you're looking to do, and clearly you have plenty of material to work with!

I haven’t done it yet but I can see what you are talking about. Every way I have considered has its own issues.

Also mentioned earlier my grandfather's brother brought back his 1903 Springfield that saw trench duty. When my uncle passed the wrong member of the family got it. I have offered big money for it but as of yet I don't have it. Why my uncle's son didn't get it is beyond me. One of the daughters husband has it which doesn't set well with me

I hate to hear that, I never got to see my great grandfather’s guns because a relative decided that drugs were more important and sold them at a pawnshop. Family certainly ain’t always family lol

I left a comment earlier today but I don't see it. What I did was turned the angle out with custom fit angle brackets in the inside corner on the outside of the frame. Drilled hole thru bracket and frame. I didn't have rear tire but pulled heavy welders for several years. Stopping corrosion between the two layers is important.

Not a bad idea, I haven’t decided what path to take on it yet.

@@redclaytraveler1949 you probably know they make a replacement for that piece. It's slightly thicker but may not be the same grade of steel. Bout have to have it stripped to the frame with tank removed for that though.

@@johndoe43 Even if I replaced it, the problem stays the same unless it is way thicker. I just wish they would have considered a stronger bumper attachment method. lol

@@redclaytraveler1949 true. Just wanted you to know they make it. With the tire it's a lot of leverage to a small footing. On mine I had the outward leg at the bottom of the crossmember coming out toward you. The frame brackets are cut to fit around body mounts so they are small and tight fit but add a lot of strength. A tire will probably shake and vibrate so a rubber faced bumper would probably need to go against the body. I just throw the tire in the bed and pile my load on top of it. Sucks as it takes up room. I turn tire upside down and put my 5 gal cooler in the wheel. As you know tire mounted to body tears up the body over time. On the brackets I didn't use the holes in the gas tank area. Only the four on the outside of the frame so no tank removal. I have a matkins replacement frame on the Jeep where my buddy died and they used an odd leg angle but I think it's only five sixteenths thick. On your idea you could make identical top ledge including body mount area and make thinner body mounts. To cut angle use sawzall or cutoff wheels to cut cold so you don't warp angle

I appreciate the ideas, I’ll figure it out one way or another lol
